A 50-year-old Brazilian woman was admitted to our department because of pelvic pain irradiated to the lower left limb, ipsilateral ankle swelling and progressive weight loss. Doppler ultrasound demonstrated deep venous femoropopliteal thrombosis, while a thorax-abdomen CT scan showed multiple solid hypodense pulmonary lesions, a large hypodense lesion in the iliopsoas muscles bilaterally and a complex cystoid lesion at the hepatic hilum. These findings were better characterised as active inflammatory colliquated lymph nodes by positron emission tomography and echo-guided percutaneous fine-need

We report the case of a 10-year-old girl who presented to the emergency department with acute abdominal pain. She was diagnosed as having extrapulmonary tuberculosis (TB) with multifocal osteomyelitis of the spine and ribs, peritonitis and intestinal involvement. We describe the clinical presentation of this unusual constellation of the disease in the absence of pulmonary involvement in a child and discuss the diagnostic challenges and treatment of these rare forms of TB.

The aim of the present study was to determine the demographics of patients with extrapulmonary tuberculosis in Germany. Data on 26,302 tuberculosis cases from a national survey carried out during the period 1996-2000 were analysed. The crude proportion of tuberculosis patients with extrapulmonary manifestations was 21.6%. Extrapulmonary tuberculosis was most likely among females, children aged <15 yrs and persons originating from Africa and Asia. Females tended to be more likely to have any form of extrapulmonary tuberculosis than males, except pleural tuberculosis. The strength of this associ

This study describes the epidemiology of extrapulmonary tuberculosis (TB) in the Netherlands from 1993 through 2001. We assessed whether the increasing numbers of inhabitants with a non-Western ethnic background had an effect on the number of extrapulmonary patients. We used data from the Netherlands Tuberculosis Register and included all cases of TB diagnosed in the Netherlands between January 1, 1993, and December 31, 2001. Information on age, sex, nationality, year of diagnosis, culture result, anatomic location of the site of disease, and HIV status was retrieved from the register. Of 13,2

OBJECTIVE: To analyse the distribution of the extrapulmonary forms of presentation of tuberculosis (EFP) in our health district.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: The medical records of patients diagnosed with extrapulmonary tuberculosis attending the Tuberculosis Prevention and Control Unit of the Santiago Health District were reviewed over a three years period. The classification of EFP was: extrapulmonary forms (EF), disease outside the lung; mixed forms (MF), the presence of both pulmonary and extrapulmonary tuberculosis; disseminated forms (DF), the presence of two or more extrapulmonary locations;

An outbreak of mainly extrapulmonary tuberculosis (TB) in a group of about 550 patients with rheumatoid arthritis (RA) is described. These patients had been attending the practice of a former general practitioner who treated cases of rheumatoid arthritis with phenylbutazone and steroids. The number of diagnosed TB cases was 55. Six cases had a contagious lung localisation. The possible sources of the outbreak were analysed. Both a visit on a same day as a sputum positive patient (chi 2-trend: 20.4; p < 0.001) and the administration of steroids (odds ratio (OR): 36.2; 95% confidence interval (C

Laryngeal tuberculosis (TB) is a rare form of extrapulmonary tuberculosis and its isolated presentation without concurrent pulmonary involvement is even rare [1, 2] This poses significant diagnostic challenges as it can present with nonspecific symptoms such as hoarseness, throat pain or dysphagia. In this report, we highlight the case of a 42-year-old female who presented with a history of a change in voice, which was eventually diagnosed as isolated primary laryngeal tuberculosis post investigations.

BACKGROUND: Pulmonary tuberculosis may result in haematogenous and lymphatic extension in case of failure of early detection, or immunocompromised status, leading to extrapulmonary tuberculosis. Rare sites of extrapulmonary tuberculosis include the gastrointestinal tract, musculoskeletal system, genital tract, middle ear and pericardium. Histopathological findings of macro-confluent granuloma with or without caseous necrosis, along with detection of acid-fast bacilli (AFB) on Ziehl-Neelsen (ZN) staining, and GeneXpert for detection of Mycobacterium tuberculosis DNA, are key in establishing a d

BACKGROUND: The actual burden of bacteriologically confirmed extrapulmonary tuberculosis (EPTB) and risk factors in Ethiopia is not well known due to the lack of a strong surveillance system in Ethiopia. Thus, this study was conducted to estimate the pooled prevalence of bacteriologically confirmed EPTB and the associated risk factors among persons suspected to have non-respiratory tuberculosis in Ethiopia.
METHODS: A systematic review and meta-analysis of published studies reporting the prevalence of EPTB from searched electronic databases; Science Direct, PubMed, and Google Scholar was esti

BACKGROUND: Extrapulmonary tuberculosis (EPTB) represents a range of disease manifestations, and is a major contributor to ongoing TB burden in the United States. We examined the incidence, trends and characteristics of EPTB in a high-burden TB county in Northern California.
METHODS: We extracted surveillance data for all TB cases in Alameda County during 2010-2021. TB was classified per national surveillance definitions, and EPTB included any site involvement other than the lung. We determined overall and annual incidence of EPTB in comparison to pulmonary TB (PTB), and assessed trends in in

BACKGROUND: Pediatric tuberculosis (TB) remains a significant global health issue due to its diagnostic complexity and paucibacillary nature. This study aimed to evaluate the clinical, diagnostic, and immunological characteristics of pulmonary TB (PTB) and extrapulmonary TB (EPTB) in children. METHODS: A retrospective review was conducted on 88 pediatric TB cases (38 PTB, 50 EPTB) at a referral children’s hospital in Iran from 2020 to 2024. Diagnostic methods included nucleic acid amplification tests (NAATs), interferon-gamma release assay (IGRA), tuberculin skin test (TST), mycobacterial cult

Extrapulmonary tuberculosis (EPTB) is characterized by a very low bacterial load and could remain undiagnosed for a long time in a number of cases due to atypical presentation. Conventional methods and their time to results are not always helpful in rapidly making an EPTB diagnosis and initiating appropriate treatment. In order to accelerate the bacteriological confirmation, we evaluated the benefits of systematically using nucleic acid amplification test (NAAT) on extrapulmonary specimens for TB diagnosis in a developed country. From November 2017 to March 2021, all extrapulmonary samples rec

Tuberculosis (TB) remains one of the leading infectious causes of death throughout the world. Extrapulmonary forms, namely adrenalitis and prostatitis, are rare presentations of TB and pose a difficult diagnostic challenge, given their non-specific manifestations. The authors present a case of a 42-year-old man with long-standing symptoms of fatigue, anorexia, weight loss, nightly fever and sudoresis. He also suffered from sporadic vomiting and episodic hypotension, and had skin hyperpigmentation, as well as frequent urination, perineal discomfort and pain at ejaculation. Laboratory investigat

In order to know extrapulmonary tuberculosis in our environment the results of all samples submitted for culture of mycobacteria to the Microbiology Department, Fundación Jiménez Díaz, from 1980 to 1993 were analyzed. During this period 290 cases of extrapulmonary cases were diagnosed, 101 from 1980 to 1985 and 189 from 1986 to 1993. The most common site of infection before 1985 was in genitourinary tract (42.6%); in contrast, from 1986 onwards the more common sites of infection were pleural (22.8%), genitourinary tract and lymphatic glands (22.2% in both sites). When EPT was compared in the t

Extrapulmonary tuberculosis represents 15-20% of all tuberculosis infections and can involve nearly any organ, earning tuberculosis a reputation as one of the great mimickers in medicine. Imaging plays a critical role in diagnosing extrapulmonary tuberculosis, which presents with a wide range of manifestations. We present a pictorial essay comprising cases from Asia, where tuberculosis remains endemic, illustrating the imaging characteristics of extrapulmonary tuberculosis with a focus on thoracoabdominal pathology. Differential diagnoses that exhibit similar imaging findings are also discusse

Extrapulmonary tuberculosis often presents diagnostic challenges due to its involvement in multiple organ systems. We report a case of a 54-year-old, immunocompetent man who presented with prolonged fever and a generalized seizure. Neuroimaging revealed ring-enhancing lesions suggestive of tuberculomas. Further evaluation demonstrated a seminal vesicle abscess and cervical lymphadenitis. Histopathology and microbiological analysis confirmed Tuberculosis. The patient was initiated on antitubercular therapy, along with anti-convulsants and steroids. This case highlights the importance of conside
