The tuberculosis of the larynx was an incurable deadly infectious disease until the introduction of antituberculous drugs in therapy. Since the 18th century medical specialists investigated this kind of tuberculosis. Progresses of laryngeal diagnostic made possible a local treatment with drugs, operations and experiments with X-rays. After the development of antituberculous drugs, tuberculosis of the larynx became a curable disease.

A 12.5-year-old Nigerian child presented with progressively worsening hoarseness of 9 months duration, without overt features of chronic ill health. Superficial discrete cervical adenitis, radiological evidence of miliary tuberculosis and hilar adenopathy were identified on admission. The laryngoscopic findings comprised fully mobile but 'beefy' red, oedematous vocal cords and interarytenoid region. The diagnosis of tuberculous laryngitis was made on the basis of the laryngoscopic, radiological and clinical improvement that followed antituberculous therapy. The possible pathogeneses of tubercu

The recurrent laryngeal nerve in its course from the brain stem to the larynx follows a path that brings it in proximity to numerous structures. These structures can interfere with its function by pressure or by disruption of the nerve caused by disease invading the nerve. The various causes of recurrent laryngeal nerve paralysis that I have observed during the past 24 years are reported. In 134 patients with recurrent laryngeal nerve paralysis, the left recurrent nerve was most commonly involved. Malignant neoplasms of the lung and pulmonary tuberculosis were the most frequent causes of the p

We present nine patients with tuberculous laryngitis seen in our otolaryngology out-patient department during the year of 1983. Four patients were previously diagnosed as having pulmonary tuberculosis and were receiving or had received treatment for the complaint prior to our consultation. Of the nine patients, eight had positive chest X-rays for pulmonary tuberculosis. Three patients were known to have positive sputum results; in three patients the result was not known, whilst in the remaining three patients the result was recorded as negative. Biopsies done on four patients were compatible w

The incidence of tuberculosis has progressively decreased in developed countries after the advent of antituberculous chemotherapy, but has recently been increasing again mainly due to migratory flows. Although common in the past and considered to be a prelethal event, laryngeal involvement has become a rarity. We report the case of a 52-year-old female smoker who complained of persistent aphonia. Videostroboscopy showed bilateral vocal fold erythroleukoplakias. A chest X-ray and CT scan aroused the suspicion of lung tuberculosis, which was confirmed by Ziehl-Neelsen staining for acid-alcohol-f

The CT findings in six patients with benign laryngeal expansions are reported. Although CT in laryngeal carcinomas has been extensively dealt with in the literature, little mention has been made of benign conditions. The CT appearances of expansions due to chondroma, tuberculosis, hypertrophic lingual tonsilla, fluid-filled laryngocele, aberrant thyroid adenoma, and chronic granulomatous inflammation are described.

The endolaryngeal structures are subjected to insult from prolonged endotracheal intubation. Factors that may exacerbate this injury include intubation technique, duration of intubation, tube geometry and constitution, frequency of reintubation, and patient-related factors such as concomitant medical diseases. The contribution of underlying medical disease to laryngeal intubation injury was studied prospectively by sequential endoscopy from the time of tracheotomy. Diabetes mellitus, congestive heart failure, and a history of stroke or tuberculosis increased the likelihood of severe laryngeal

Primary aspergillosis usually affects the paranasal sinuses, orbit, ear, and lower respiratory tract. Laryngeal aspergillosis usually occurs as a result of secondary invasion from the tracheobronchial tree, more commonly in immunocompromised hosts. Primary laryngeal localization of Aspergillus infection is seldom encountered. We report the case of an immunocompetent 42-year-old man who presented with hoarseness and a laryngeal ulcer of fairly long duration. A malignancy was initially suspected clinically, but a laryngoscopic biopsy led to a diagnosis of invasive primary laryngeal aspergillosis

Tuberculosis affecting the thyroid gland is a rare condition. We present the case of a 30-year-old man with thyroid tuberculosis whose presenting complaints were dyspnoea and hoarseness. There was a cystic mass in the posterosuperior right thyroid lobe extending into the paraglottic space. There was also recurrent laryngeal nerve involvement. We performed surgery and administered post-operative antituberculous treatment.

INTRODUCTION: Tuberculosis is an infectious disease with various clinical and radiological symptoms which are determined primarily by the immune system of the host towards the infection with Mycobacterium tuberculosis. The infection with M. tuberculosis can be limited to an organ or it can spread through hematogenous or lymphatic route to other organs (especially cases of younger or older people). Tuberculosis always needs bacteriological or histopathological confirmation. Matherial and method: We present the case of a 62 year old woman investigated and treated in our Hospital in 2009-2010 for

Pulmonary tuberculosis: primary tuberculosis, usually asymptomatic, represents the first infection and is shown by a parenchymal mostly mid-pulmonary focus and satellite lymphadenopathy. Postprimary pulmonary tuberculosis, mostly located in the upper fields may be caused by endogenous reinfection for reactivation of a hematogenous focus formed during primary infection or from exogenous reinfection. Extrapulmonary tuberculosis: it includes numerous forms mostly from hematogenous spread. Miliary tuberculosis may involve a number of organs and apparatus besides the lung. Tuberculous meningitis pr

Although the respiratory tract is the major site for tuberculous lesions, all organs can be affected. The authors review the clinical files of 25 patients admitted to our Department with lung and/or pleural tuberculous disease, confirmed by bacteriology or histopathology, who simultaneously suffered from tuberculosis in other organs. We included 20 men and 5 women, aged from 10 to 74 years (mean: 37.12 years); 6 patients had pleural tuberculosis, 19 had pulmonary tuberculosis, 4 of them having miliary tuberculosis. Lymph node tuberculosis was diagnosed in 14 patients, tuberculosis of the bones

Tuberculosis (TB) is the second most common contagious disease, caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis (M. tuberculosis). Besides a rare laryngeal tuberculosis, pulmonary tuberculosis is the only one contagious form of the disease, although it can affect any organ of the human body. TB represents a new challenge to the doctors because it appears with numerous chronic diseases, affects immunocompromised hosts, elderly people and because nonadequate therapy could create drug resistant tuberculosis. Early diagnosis of TB is fundamental for every tuberculosis control program. Before 2001 when Quanti

This study included a total of 365 patients presenting with tuberculosis of the respiratory organs followed up based at the the Republican TB dispensary. All the patients underwent the comprehensive clinical and laboratory examination with the use of the diagnostic algorithm designed for the otorhinolaryngological examination of the patients suffering from respiratory tuberculosis. The upper respiratory tract tuberculosis was diagnosed in 46 (12.6%) of the examined patients. Laryngeal tuberculosis was documented in 44 (12.1%) patients and middle ear tuberculosis in 2 (0.5%) patients. The most

OBJECTIVE: We report an extremely rare presentation of concomitant tuberculous cervical lymphadenitis in a patient with carcinoma of the larynx.
CASE REPORT: A 66-year-old man presented with a nine-month history of hoarseness. He was found to have an exophytic lesion over the posterior half of the right vocal fold. He also had a palpable right jugulodigastric node. Biopsy of the vocal fold lesion revealed invasive squamous cell carcinoma. Histological analysis of an excision biopsy specimen from the lymph node was highly suggestive of tuberculosis. On further assessment of the slides, one aci

BACKGROUND: Hoarseness is a major symptom of laryngeal disease. Persistent hoarseness may be an early warning of such sinister lesions as cancer of the larynx and nasopharynx, hence the need for increased awareness of this symptom and its causes.
METHODS: This is a retrospective study of all hoarse adult patients seen in the Otorhinolaryngology clinics of the University College Hospital Ibadan over an 8-year period (1995-2002).
RESULTS: The total study population of 124 patients consisted of 72 (58.06%) males and 52 (41.94%) females with an overall mean age of 46.98 years and age range 16-84
