Tuberculosis (TB) is still the world's second most frequent cause of death due to infectious diseases after HIV infection, and this has aroused greater interest in identifying and managing exposed subjects, whether they are simply infected or have developed one of the clinical variants of the disease. Unfortunately, not even the latest laboratory techniques are always successful in identifying affected children because they are more likely to have negative cultures and tuberculin skin test results, equivocal chest X-ray findings, and atypical clinical manifestations than adults. Furthermore, t

The essential component of tuberculosis elimination strategy is to identify and treat persons with latent tuberculosis infection (LTBI) who are at high risk for developing active tuberculosis. The tuberculin skin test is the only proven method for identifying LTBI. Although the specificity and the sensitivity are decreased by cross reaction with BCG vaccination and by non tuberculous mycobacteria, there is no better diagnostic tool. The test's positive predictive value is poor in populations with low risk for tuberculosis. Identification of persons with LTBI is focused on groups at high risk w

Pellagra usually results from niacin deficiency and presents with the classic triad of dermatitis, diarrhea, and dementia. It is most commonly associated with malnutrition and poverty and is extremely rare in industrialized societies. Furthermore, pellagra can be induced by special clinical conditions that interfere with the intake, absorption, and metabolism of niacin. Because of its detrimental effects on health and its favorable prognosis after supplementation of nicotinamide, the importance of early diagnosis and treatment should be emphasized. Herein, we report a case of pellagra in a you

Tuberculosis (TB) in children reflects the prevalence of the disease in adults as well as current transmission rates. Africa and South-east Asia have the largest number of tuberculosis cases and the situation there has been worsened by the HIV epidemic. Children born to HIV-infected parents, whether infected or not, are at high risk of developing tuberculosis because of the increased risk of exposure to the disease. Tuberculosis is more common among the disadvantaged and vulnerable groups in each society and the impact of overcrowding, under-nutrition and poverty is particularly severe on chil

Tuberculosis (TB) remains an ongoing threat. TB requires exposure to Mycobacterium tuberculosis, but disease development is driven by exposure, infectiousness, susceptibility, and environment. TB elimination requires increased awareness about TB prevention and treatment strategies. The centers of TB excellence complement current guidelines from the Center for Disease Control and Prevention, the National TB Coalition of America, and the Infectious Disease Society of America to support nurses and providers. Enhanced contact investigation, prevention, and treatment will aid in the pathway to a TB

A 10-year experience in the diagnosis and treatment of 92 patients with inflammatory bowel diseases in Kuala Lumpur is described. Tuberculosis (34 cases) was the most common inflammatory bowel disease of surgical importance. The clinical presentation of tuberculous enteritis and Crohn's disease is similar, though tuberculosis is strongly suggested by associated pulmonary disease and radiological evidence of caecal involvement. The finding of 10 cases each of Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis is in keeping with an increased awareness of these conditions in a developing urban society where

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Preventive tuberculosis (TB) therapy before initiating MTX or IL-17/IL-23/IL-12/23p40 inhibitors for latent tuberculosis infection (LTBI) is supported by indirect evidence of TB reactivations with TNF inhibitors. However, direct evidence for MTX or IL-17/IL-23/IL-12/23p40 inhibitors is limited. To better evaluate the risk of TB reactivation, data on LTBI patients exposed to these medications without preventive TB therapy are necessary. This study was conducted as part of the update of the European and German psoriasis guidelines aimed to assess current LTBI screening

BACKGROUND: Tuberculosis disease epidemiology is closely related to social and economic conditions which make its prevention, control and cure challenging. Early diagnosis and adequate treatment will help to prevent various tuberculosis related morbidities. Factors such as adverse effects of drugs, transportation cost, family support, distance to the treatment center, personal habits, co morbid conditions, and patients' multiple obligations concerning to their employment, family and society have an impact on the treatment outcomes.
OBJECTIVE: To know the factors affecting tuberculosis treatme

SETTING: Spain is one of the few industrialized countries in which reliable official data on the occurrence of tuberculosis are not available.
OBJECTIVE: One of the purposes of the Tuberculosis and Respiratory Infection (TRI) working group established by the Spanish Society of Thoracic Surgery (Sociedad Española de Nuemología y Cirugía Torácica [SEPAR]) in 1988, was to determine the true situation of Mycobacterium tuberculosis infection and active tuberculosis disease in our country.
DESIGN: A questionnaire requesting epidemiological data on tuberculosis was sent to the Departments of Public

Most cases of Mycobacterium tuberculosis infection in the nervous system involve tuberculous meningitis (TBM), which is a severe form of extrapulmonary tuberculosis. Patients who demonstrate a subacute clinical course with headache, vomiting, pyrexia and anorexia should be suspected of having TBM. Diagnosis is based on the clinical symptoms, and cerebrospinal fluid changes (increased protein, low glucose and mononuclear cell pleocytosis). Cerebrospinal fluid smear examination, mycobacterial culture and finding on polymerase chain reaction are useful for establishing a definitive diagnosis of T

Tuberculosis disproportionately affects certain segments of society, such as the homeless, and can cause extremely serious disease among persons with severely impaired cellular immunity, especially those with HIV infection. Inhalation of droplet nuclei, which are the airborne residual of droplets expelled from an infected host, is the primary means of transmission. Factors associated with transmission in shelters for the homeless include crowding, inadequate ventilation, and poor compliance with drug therapy. One of the greatest challenges to treatment of this infection among the homeless is t

The authors report 45 personal cases observed over the last ten years, from a series of 520 cases collected during a multi-centre enquiry of the French Society of Rheumatology and a review of the literature; they discuss the present tendencies in the treatment of bone and joint tuberculosis. Antibiotic and chemotherapy uses drugs which are more and more effective, easier and easier to manipulate, ensuring in almost all cases a lasting cure with frequent conservation of joint function, shortening the natural course of the disease, and preventing or curing its complications. The role of surgery

Tuberculosis (TB) is still a major global threat, killing more than one million persons each year. With the constant increase of Mycobacterium tuberculosis strains resistant to first- and second-line drugs, there is an urgent need for the development of new drugs to control the propagation of TB. Although screenings of small molecules on axenic M. tuberculosis cultures were successful for the identification of novel putative anti-TB drugs, new drugs in the development pipeline remains scarce. Host-directed therapy may represent an alternative for drug development against TB. Indeed, M. tubercu

Of all achievements in medicine, the successful treatment of tuberculosis has had one of the greatest impacts on society. Tuberculosis was a leading cause of disease and a mortal enemy of humanity for millennia. The first step in finding a cure was the discovery of the cause of tuberculosis by Robert Koch in 1882. The sanatorium movement that began shortly afterward in Europe, and soon spread to the United States, brought attention to the plight of afflicted persons, and catalyzed public health action. The antituberculosis benefit of streptomycin was announced in 1945, although application was

BACKGROUND: The most common causes for ulcero-stricturing diseases of the ileo-cecal region and colon in Southeast Asia are Crohn's disease (CD) and gastrointestinal tuberculosis (GI TB). Diagnosing these conditions is challenging because they share several clinical, endoscopic, radiological and histological features on mucosal biopsies. Therefore, there is a need to standardize the sampling, processing and interpretation of mucosal biopsies to aid clinical decision-making.
METHODS: Recognizing this challenge, core subject experts nominated by the Indian Association of Pathologists and Microb

When there were giants on the earth, two of them, Rudolf Kraus and Giovanni Noe, met at the ancient Bacteriological Institute of Chile, and founded together a journal representing the principles of the institution. A nostalgic glance over the papers published therein for these so named giants lets us know a little about the study of infectious diseases in the thirties, when tuberculosis and malaria were two of the biggest problems for the world's public health... then and now.

INTRODUCTION: The prevalence of tuberculosis depends on various factors such as migration, homelessness, malnutrition, unemployment, bad life conditions and the aging of a society. The aim of this study was to evaluate tuberculosis in females treated at the Mazovian Treatment Centre of Tuberculosis and Lung Diseases (Mazowieckie Centrum Leczenia Chorób Płuc i Gruźlicy) in Otwock, regarding the context of demographic, social and professional status of female patients. The duration of the illness and the extent of radiographic changes were also taken into consideration.

The development of the epidemiology of tuberculosis in GDR from 1949 is evaluated. The factors deeply influencing incidence and prevalence of tuberculosis in GDR are: the socioeconomic development of a socialist society with continuous increase of living standard and social fonds, the state of the socialist public health system in general, and the special services and methods for the control of tuberculosis in the chest clinics and hospitals. Tuberculosis is no more a common disease in GDR. Tubercle bacilli are more ubiquitous, but are confined to distinct sources. Highest attention must be pa

Though the mortality of tuberculosis in Japan has been extremely rapidly depressed from about 150 deaths per 100,000 in 1950 down to about 4 in 1985 during the period of a couple of decades after the World War II. However, the declining trend of the mortality and the morbidity seem to be leveling off now and the morbidity of the tuberculosis remain on the almost same level which are much higher than that of the developed countries. We have to make the progress in the field of the new diagnostic technique and the creation of the new drugs applying the most frontier science and the social system
