High Methylmercury in Arctic and Subarctic Ponds is Related to Nutrient Levels in the Warming Eastern Canadian Arctic.

Permafrost thaw ponds are ubiquitous in the eastern Canadian Arctic, yet little information exists on their potential as sources of methylmercury (MeHg) to freshwaters. They are microbially active and conducive to methylation of inorganic mercury, and are also affected by Arctic warming. This multiyear study investigated thaw ponds in a discontinuous permafrost region in the Subarctic taiga (Kuujjuarapik-Whapmagoostui, QC) and a continuous permafrost region in the Arctic tundra (Bylot Island, NU). MeHg concentrations in thaw ponds were well above levels measured in most freshwater ecosystems i

Cyanogenic Pseudomonas spp. strains are concentrated in the rhizosphere of alpine pioneer plants.

HCN producing bacteria have previously been isolated from alpine mineral soil and their ecophysiology was presumed to be associated with mineral weathering. Nevertheless, the high ecological patchiness of the alpine environment calls for an extensive and detailed analysis of the spatial distribution of HCN producing bacterial populations and their associated weathering traits. Our results of such an analysis showed that primarily the rhizosphere of pioneer plants was rich in HPPs, harbouring the most potent HCN producers. HCN production incidence and intensity were dependent on the plant-assoc

Life Under the Snow: Camera Trap Videos Capture Year-Round Lemming Activity and Behavior.

Studying Arctic animals in winter is challenging, particularly for cryptic species like lemmings, which live within the snowpack for protection from the cold. Winter reproduction is thought to be a crucial component of their cyclic fluctuations, yet little is known about their winter behavior and demography. Camera traps are widely used to study animal ecology, but none are specifically designed for animal life beneath the snow under harsh conditions. We evaluated the reliability of camera traps specifically designed to study the activity and behavior of lemmings under the snow in the High Arc

Environmental differentiation between the invasive cattle fever ticks Rhipicephalus (Boophilus) microplus and Rhipicephalus (Boophilus) annulatus revealed by comparative geographical ecology.

Cattle fever ticks, Rhipicephalus (Boophilus) microplus and R. (B.) annulatus, are major constraints on cattle production worldwide because they directly reduce productivity and transmit the agents of bovine babesiosis and anaplasmosis. Despite their shared hosts and similar vector capacity, their environmental preferences and the extent to which they occupy comparable climatic space remain unclear. We compiled historical occurrence records from global sources and, after quality control and spatial thinning, retained 2338 records for R. (B.) microplus and 527 for R. (B.) annulatus. Using clima

Diversity and Plant Growth-Promoting Properties of Rhodiola rosea Root Endophytic Bacteria.

Plants inhabiting environments with suboptimal growth conditions often have a more pronounced capacity to attract and sustain microbial communities that improve nutrient absorption and expand abiotic stress tolerance. Rhodiola rosea L. is a succulent plant of the Crassulaceae family adapted to survive in sandy or rocky soils or dry tundra. The aim of the present study was to investigate the diversity and plant growth-stimulating potential of R. rosea endophytic microbiota. Metataxonomic analysis of the bacterial diversity in the rhizome of R. rosea revealed 108 families. Among these, three fam

Histology of a Woolly Mammoth (Mammuthus primigenius) Preserved in Permafrost, Yamal Peninsula, Northwest Siberia.

In 2007, the baby woolly mammoth (Mammuthus primigenius) named Lyuba was found frozen in the Siberian tundra permafrost along the Yuribey River. She was proclaimed the best-preserved mammoth discovery. As part of the endoscopic examination of Lyuba, tissue samples of hair, muscle, and internal organs were taken. The sectioned biopsies were stained using standard and special histological stains. In general, the microscopic preservation of the tissue was good although no clearly identifiable cell nuclei were found by standard staining methods. Only a few cell nuclei could be identified in some s

Plant endemism of the Balkan high-mountain fens: a community-level synthesis and their climate change perspective.

The phenomenon of Balkan high-mountain fen plant endemism, unique within Europe, remains poorly studied. We compiled an original dataset of wetland vegetation-plot data across nine countries where Balkan endemics and subendemics occur. We tested the diversity patterns for endemics, non-endemic habitat specialists of bryophytes and vascular plants and matrix-derived taxa with respect to climate, palaeoclimate, edaphic and topographic factors. We used Spearman correlations, Spatial Autoregressive Error Models, Canonical Correspondence Analysis and Principal Component Analysis of abiotic factors

Environmental Drivers of Geographic Isolation in Three Pika Species in Northeast Asia.

Geographic segregation among closely related species may arise from divergent environmental preferences or constraints of interspecific interactions. For these three congeneric pika species in northeastern Asia, the relative contributions of these mechanisms remain poorly understood. This study investigates three congeneric species: Ochotona coreana, Ochotona mantchurica, and Ochotona hyperborea, to identify how environmental gradients and interspecific niche relationships jointly shape their spatial segregation. We combined public records with field survey to build species distribution models

Reindeer in the Arctic reduce sleep need during rumination.

Timing and quantity of sleep depend on a circadian (∼24-h) rhythm and a specific sleep requirement.1 Sleep curtailment results in a homeostatic rebound of more and deeper sleep, the latter reflected in increased electroencephalographic (EEG) slow-wave activity (SWA) during non-rapid eye movement (NREM) sleep.2 Circadian rhythms are synchronized by the light-dark cycle but persist under constant conditions.3,4,5 Strikingly, arctic reindeer behavior is arrhythmic during the solstices.6 Moreover, the Arctic's extreme seasonal environmental changes cause large variations in overall activity and fo

Phylogenetic relationships, host affinity, and geographic structure of boreal and arctic endophytes from three major plant lineages.

Although associated with all plants, fungal endophytes (microfungi that live within healthy plant tissues) represent an unknown proportion of fungal diversity. While there is a growing appreciation of their ecological importance and human uses, little is known about their host specificity, geographic structure, or phylogenetic relationships. We surveyed endophytic Ascomycota from healthy photosynthetic tissues of three plant species (Huperzia selago, Picea mariana, and Dryas integrifolia, representing lycophytes, conifers, and angiosperms, respectively) in northern and southern boreal forest (

Trapping oestrid parasites of reindeer: the response of Cephenemyia trompe and Hypoderma tarandi to baited traps.

At 340-360 km North of the Arctic Circle in Norway, Hypoderma tarandi (L.) and Cephenemyia trompe (Modeer) females were caught in baited traps from 10 July to 21 August. During three summers, adverse climatic conditions inhibited flight activity of these oestrids on 56-68% of the days. Flies were not caught prior to or after these dates, nor at winds above 8 m/s, temperatures below 10 degrees C, light intensities below 20,000 lux, or during periods of rain or snow. CO2-baited insect flight traps caught significantly more H.tarandi females than non-baited traps. However, neither a white reindee

TRANSMISSION DYNAMICS OF TOXOPLASMA GONDII IN ARCTIC FOXES (VULPES LAGOPUS): A LONG-TERM MARK-RECAPTURE SEROLOGIC STUDY AT KARRAK LAKE, NUNAVUT, CANADA.

Transmission dynamics of Toxoplasma gondii, a parasite of importance for wildlife and human health, are enigmatic in the Arctic tundra, where free-ranging wild and domestic felid definitive hosts are absent and rarely observed, respectively. Through a multiyear mark-recapture study (2011-17), serosurveillance was conducted to investigate transmission of T. gondii in Arctic foxes (Vulpes lagopus) in the Karrak Lake region, Nunavut, Canada. Sera from adult foxes and fox pups were tested for antibodies to T. gondii by using serologic methods, including the indirect fluorescent antibody test, dire

Controlled hypobaric hypoxia increases immunological tolerance by modifying HLA-G expression, a potential therapy to inflammatory diseases.

One of the most striking characteristics of human beings is the incredible capacity to adapt to different environments. This capacity allowed humans to spread all over our planet, occupying habitats as diverse as deserts, tropical forests or tundra regions. Interactions with the environment, climate, food and water availability shaped our evolution and define our survival. Essential to human life, oxygen availability also controls human dispersion and adaptation. For example, low oxygen availability can lead to physiological adaptations in populations living in highlands. Moreover, the consequ

Methylmercury in subarctic amphibians: environmental gradients, bioaccumulation, and estimated flux.

Rapid warming in polar regions is causing large changes to ecosystems, including altering environmentally available mercury (Hg). Although subarctic freshwater systems have simple vertebrate communities, Hg in amphibians remains unexplored. We measured total Hg (THg) in wetland sediments and methylmercury (MeHg) in multiple life-stages (eggs to adults) of wood frogs (Rana sylvatica) and larval boreal chorus frogs (Pseudacris maculata) from up to 25 wetlands near Churchill, Manitoba (Canada), during the summers of 2018-2019. We used egg mass counts for wood frogs from 24 wetlands (2015-2019) an

Is molecular xenomonitoring of mosquitoes for Dirofilaria repens suitable for dirofilariosis surveillance in endemic regions?

Dirofilaria repens is a parasite of animals and humans, transferred by mosquitoes. The assessment of the presence of D. repens-infected vertebrate hosts in the investigated area can be performed by xenomonitoring—detection of the parasite in blood-feeding arthropods. Our study aimed to evaluate PCR xenomonitoring of mosquitoes as a tool for dirofilariosis surveillance in Poland. We were also interested whether inter-study comparisons at the international level would be possible. Mosquitoes were collected in a single locality in Mazowsze province in Poland, in which between 12 and 20% of dogs w

Chronic wasting disease (CWD) in cervids.

In April and May of 2016, Norway confirmed two cases of chronic wasting disease (CWD) in a wild reindeer and a wild moose, respectively. In the light of this emerging issue, the European Commission requested EFSA to recommend surveillance activities and, if necessary, additional animal health risk-based measures to prevent the introduction of the disease and the spread into/within the EU, specifically Estonia, Finland, Iceland, Latvia, Lithuania, Norway, Poland and Sweden, and considering seven wild, semidomesticated and farmed cervid species (Eurasian tundra reindeer, Finnish (Eurasian) fores

Low Cost and Compact FMCW 24 GHz Radar Applications for Snowpack and Ice Thickness Measurements.

Monitoring the evolution of snow on the ground and lake ice-two of the most important components of the changing northern environment-is essential. In this paper, we describe a lightweight, compact and autonomous 24 GHz frequency-modulated continuous-wave (FMCW) radar system for freshwater ice thickness and snow mass (snow water equivalent, SWE) measurements. Although FMCW radars have a long-established history, the novelty of this research lies in that we take advantage the availability of a new generation of low cost and low power requirement units that facilitates the monitoring of snow and

Chemical signature of Eurois occulta L. outbreaks in the xylem cell wall of Salix glauca L. in Greenland.

Insect defoliations are a major natural disturbance in high-latitude ecosystems and are expected to increase in frequency and severity due to current climatic change. Defoliations cause severe reductions in biomass and carbon investments that affect the functioning and productivity of tundra ecosystems. Here we combined dendro-anatomical analysis with chemical imaging to investigate the direct and lagged effects of insect outbreaks on carbon investment. We analysed the content of lignin vs. holocellulose, i.e. unspecified carbohydrates in xylem samples of Salix glauca L. collected at Iffiartar

Clinical and immunologic evaluation of Cedrus deodara pollen: a new allergen from India.

BACKGROUND: Allergy to pollen from gymnosperms is well documented in the West. However, many allergenic species are native to the Himalayan region of India, and Cedrus deodara (Pinaceae) was selected for allergologic investigation. The objective was to define the allergologic and immunochemical aspects of C. deodara pollen. METHODS: Pollen antigen from C. deodara (CD) was prepared and characterized by biochemical and biologic assays. Specific IgE binding was determined by means of ELISA and immunoblotting. RESULTS: CD pollen antigen caused marked skin sensitivity in 7.5% of an atopic populat

Foliar metabolomes of woody plant communities across an elevational gradient on Mount Washington (New Hampshire, USA).

BACKGROUND AND AIMS: Plants produce myriad specialized metabolites that constitute the metabolome and mediate responses to abiotic and biotic factors. Elevational gradients, where environmental conditions change predictably over short distances, are natural laboratories for examining plant chemical variation. Using a temperate montane system, we examine how woody plant metabolomes vary with elevation, between leaf forms, and among phylogenetic lineages. METHODS: We collected leaves from 23 woody plant species at 18 sites from 320 to 1,700 meters on Mount Washington, New Hampshire, United Stat
