[Alveolar echinococcosis in Tunisia. Apropos of 2 cases].

The authors report the first two cases of Echinococcus multilocularis observed in Tunisia, in two patients from the North-West of the country, who never travelled abroad. The diagnosis was reached by histopathologic examination of a partial hepatectomy section. The appearance of this disease in this geographic area where unilocularis hydatic cyst is endemically present needs further epidemiologic study.

Tinea manuum due to Trichophyton erinacei from Tunisia.

Trichophyton erinacei is a zoonotic fungus affecting hedgehogs. Although several human infections with this organism have been documented in the literature, it has rarely been isolated as a human pathogen. This paper reports on an erythematous lesion spotted on the hand of a 10-year-old girl. Based on the culture of the patient's skin scrapings, the pathogen was mycologically identified as T. erinacei, which was further confirmed by sequencing the internal transcribed spacers of the fungal nuclear ribosomal DNA using universal primer ITS1-ITS4. This is the first case of T. erinacei in a Tunisi

Cystic echinococcosis in slaughtered domestic ruminants from Tunisia.

A total of 10,818 domestic ruminants (3913 cattle, 2722 sheep, 3779 goats, 404 dromedaries) slaughtered in various abattoirs in Tunisia between 2003 and 2010 were examined for the presence of Echinococcus granulosus hydatid cysts. The prevalence of cystic echinococcosis (CE) was 16.42% in sheep, 8.56% in cattle, 5.94% in dromedaries and 2.88% in goats. CE prevalence increased with age according to an asymptotic model and there was evidence of variation in infection pressure depending on the region of Tunisia where the animals were slaughtered. Cattle appeared to have the highest infection pres

[Low birth-weight neonates in Tunisia (author's transl)].

From a prospective analysis performed in a maternity-hospital in Tunis, incidence, characteristic features and etiologic factors responsible for birth-weight below 2,5000 g have been studied. Incidence of low birth-weight is accepted as an indicator of the level of health care in a country; this incidence, established from 6,028 living births was 7.2%, similar to that in developed countries. On the contrary, intra-uterine growth retardation rates of 69.6% and prematures rates of 30.4% are closer to those in developing countries. Altogether, anomalies of height and of the height/head circumfere

Field epidemiology training in Tunisia: achievements and gaps.

INTRODUCTION: National health security depends on a trained field epidemiology workforce. This study evaluates the Tunisia Field Epidemiology Training Program (T-FETP) from its launch in 2018 through 2024, with a focus on workforce capacity, geographic coverage, and structural barriers to program sustainability. METHODS: We conducted a descriptive cross-sectional analysis of the national T-FETP graduate roster. Territorial coverage was assessed against the international benchmark of one Intermediate-level FETP graduate per 200,000 inhabitants. Density and capacity gaps were analyzed for each

METHODS: We retrospectively collected clinical and laboratory data of patients with CT who were followed up over 43 years (1982 - 2024) in the pediatric and hematology departements of a university hospital center

The incidence and prevalence of serious fungal diseases in Tunisia.

With increasing concern about the negative health impact of fungal disease, there is a need to survey what is and is not known about the epidemiology of these infections in Tunisia. We have estimated the incidence and prevalence of the most serious fungal diseases in Tunisia for the first time. Using published literature from Tunisia, or if absent other countries, we have estimated the burden of life-threatening fungal infections and those causing significant morbidity, using deterministic modeling, based on populations at greatest risk. An estimated 250,494 (2.12% of the Tunisian population)

Epidemiological and bacterial profile of childhood meningitis in Tunisia.

The worldwide burden of disease of bacterial meningitis remains high, despite the decreasing incidence following introduction of routine vaccination campaigns. The aim of our study was to evaluate the epidemiological and bacteriological profile of paediatric bacterial meningitis (BM) in Tunisian children, during the period 2003-2019, following the implementation of Haemophilus influenzae type b (Hib) vaccine (April 2011) and before 10-valent pneumoccocal conjugate vaccine (PCV10) introduction to the childhood immunization program. All bacteriologically confirmed cases of BM admitted to children'

The Clinical Features and Outcomes of Renal Amyloidosis in Tunisia.

Systemic amyloidosis is a rare disease characterized by clinical polymorphism. Indeed, the kidney is the most common organ involved and represents a real turning point in the disease. We aimed to determine the clinicopathological prognostic factors of renal amyloidosis (RA). We conducted a retrospective study including 40 cases with biopsy-proven RA collected in our department over a period of 10 years. Biochemical, demographic, and clinicopathological findings at diagnosis, as well as the follow-up data, were evaluated for each patient. The prevalence of amyloidosis was 2.7 per 100 nontranspl

Molecular Epidemiology of Rabies in Wild Canidae in Tunisia.

Rabies is a viral zoonosis that is transmissible to humans via domestic and wild animals. There are two epidemiological cycles for rabies, the urban and the sylvatic cycles. In an attempt to study the epidemiological role of wild canidae in rabies transmission, the present study aimed to analyze the genetic characteristics of virus isolates and confirm prior suggestions that rabies is maintained through a dog reservoir in Tunisia. Virus strains isolated from wild canidae were subject to viral sequencing, and Bayesian phylogenetic analysis was performed using Beast2 software. Essentially, the v

Infestation rate of lice on donkeys in Northeast Tunisia.

The present survey was carried out during autumn 2013 (September, October and November) in five localities of Jendouba district. A total number of 300 donkeys were examined and all present ectoparasites found on animals were collected and examined under stereomicroscope. The infestation rate by lice was estimated to 12.7% (38/300) there was no difference between infestation rates in males (11.5%; 22/192) and females (14.8%; 16/108). The highest infestation rate was observed in donkeys aged between 10 and 14 years, they represented 19.6% of the infested donkeys. Two lice species were collected

Congenital anomalies in Tunisia: Frequency and risk factors.

BACKGROUND: Despite the high risk of recurrence of congenital malformations, there are no well-accepted preventive measures in developing countries like Tunisia. It is recommended that thorough epidemiological studies of congenital anomalies in this country are needed. The aim of this study is to assess the frequency and types of congenital anomalies in Tunisia and research some risk factors associated with occurrence of these anomalies. METHODS: In this retrospective study, all the fetuses who were autopsied during 21years period from February 1991 to December 2011 (n=9678) at Service of emb

[First experience with outpatient laparoscopic cholecystectomy in Tunisia].

INTRODUCTION: Laparoscopic cholecystectomy is the gold standard treatment for symptomatic gallstones. There is some debate as to whether it should be performed in outpatient surgery or in one-day surgery to improve patient safety. This study aimed to evaluate the impact of laparoscopic cholecystectomy performed in outpatient surgery versus one-day surgery on standards such as mortality, serious adverse events and quality of life. METHODS: We conducted a cross-sectional descriptive study in the Department of General Surgery at the Habib Thameur Hospital over the period May 2009-February 2010.
