INTRODUCTION: Fractures of the distal third of the radius are frequently encountered in emergency services. Until recently considered as benign, however, they represent a group of numerous therapeutic problems, as debated in anatomical, radiological and clinical studies.
OBJECTIVE: To emphasize the importance of recovering the radial distance and the articular congruence in fractures of radius treated with a cast.
HYPOTHESIS: To demonstrate that ligamentotaxis obtained with the application of the Cole-Obletz technique is a good method for treatment of distal radius fractures that have a comp

UNLABELLED: Lower hip bone density showed the most consistent association with distal ulna involvement in surgically treated distal radius fractures, whereas local fracture severity showed minimal discriminatory value. Hip bone density was particularly associated with the ulnar metaphyseal subtype, characterizing conditional fracture-pattern variation within this selected population.
PURPOSE: To characterize clinical and skeletal features across fracture subtypes within surgically treated low-energy distal radius fractures and to distinguish ulnar metaphyseal fracture from ulnar styloid fract

BACKGROUND: The objectives of this study were to (1) determine the prevalence of heterotopic ossification after surgery for fractures and fracture-dislocations involving the proximal aspect of the radius or ulna, (2) identify risk factors associated with the development of heterotopic ossification in these injuries, and (3) characterize the severity and location of the heterotopic ossification and the associated range of elbow motion.
METHODS: From 2004 to 2008, 142 elbow fractures and fracture-dislocations involving the proximal aspect of the radius or ulna were treated surgically at our ins

PURPOSE: To review the results of condylar blade plate fixation of unstable fractures of the distal ulna associated with fracture of the distal radius.
METHODS: Twenty-four patients in whom a minicondylar blade plate was used to repair an unstable fracture of the distal ulna associated with a fracture of the distal radius were reviewed retrospectively an average of 26 months (range, 12-50 months) after injury. According to the Q modifier of the Comprehensive Classification of Fractures, there were 1 simple fracture of the ulnar neck (Q2), 20 comminuted fractures of the ulnar neck (Q3), and 3

OBJECTIVE: To describe the diagnosis, management, and outcome of a dog with a right distal radial osteochondroma that penetrated the ulna, causing expansile lysis and fracture.
ANIMAL: A 9-month-old entire female German Shorthaired Pointer.
CLINICAL PRESENTATION, PROGRESSION, AND PROCEDURES: The dog had a 2-month history of weight-bearing lameness of the right forelimb and a 2-week history of a progressively enlarging, firm swelling on the distolateral antebrachium. Computed tomography was used to characterize the lesion and for surgical planning.
TREATMENT AND OUTCOME: A distal ulnar ostec

PURPOSE: A comprehensive analysis of the morphology of fractures of the coronoid process (CP) can aid diagnosis and guide treatment. The involvement of the radial notch of the ulna (RN)-e.g., in anterolateral facet fractures and transverse fractures of the CP-may influence the biomechanical conditions of the proximal radioulnar joint. However, the morphometric relation between the CP and the RN and the extent to what the proximal radioulnar joint can be affected in these types of fractures is unknown.
METHODS: A total of 113 embalmed, cadaveric ulnae were dissected. All soft tissue was remove

We present a case report of a college baseball player who sustained a blunt-trauma, distal-third ulna fracture from a thrown ball with delayed presentation of ulnar nerve palsy. Even after his ulna fracture had healed, the nerve injury made it difficult for the athlete to control a baseball while throwing, resulting in a delayed return to full baseball activity for 3 to 4 months. He had almost complete nerve recovery by 6 months after his injury and complete nerve recovery by 1 year after his injury.

BACKGROUND: In general, fractures of the coronoid process are rare and usually occur in combination with additional elbow joint injuries. The treatment of these injuries aims to regain a stable as well as a flexible and loadable joint. Although there is currently little evidence, therapy recommendations remain controversial. Therefore, the aim of this study was to prognostically determine relevant factors for therapy recommendation by analysing a representative patient population of two trans-regional trauma centres.
MATERIAL AND METHODS: Seventy-seven patients with a fracture of the coronoid

OBJECTIVE: To compare the biomechanical stability of Kirschner wire and tension band wiring, reconstruction plate combined with tension band wiring, and olecranon anatomical plate in fixing proximal ulna combined with olecranon fracture, so as to provide the theoretical evidence for clinical selection of internal fixation.
METHODS: Eight specimens of elbow joints and ligaments were taken from eight fresh male adult cadaveric elbows (aged 26-43 years, mean 34.8 years) donated voluntarily. The model of proximal ulna combined with olecranon fracture was made by an osteotomy in each specimen. Fra

We recently encountered a child who fell on the left outstretched hand. She complained of left elbow pain subsequently and radiographs showed a supposedly isolated radial head dislocation. This was spontaneously reduced when the left forearm was extended for another radiograph. She was discharged from the emergency department with her left elbow in a long backslab, but returned within half an hour with recurrence of the radial head dislocation without repeat trauma. Only when the radiograph was reviewed was a subtle plastic bowing deformity of the ulna seen. This proved the axiom, that in fore

Unlike injuries involving only one of the forearm bones, complex lesions of the proximal end of the radius and the ulna are particularly unstable. Various situations-Monteggia fracture, transolecraneal dislocation, or fracture-dislocation-are encountered. The classification systems proposed to date and recalled here are insufficient, making it difficult to provide optimal therapy and also hindering comparison between published series. We propose a descriptive classification including all the anatomic varieties of complex fractures of the proximal end of the radius and the ulna. This classifica

Dislocation of the head of the radius associated with fracture of the upper end of the ulna is a common elbow injury in children. The literature on diagnosis, however, is relatively limited. The injury can be misdiagnosed and consequently mismanaged. In the present series of 46 children, the age range was from 2.5 to 12 years. The dislocation of the radial head was lateral in 50% of the cases, posterolateral in 28.2%, anterolateral in 17.4%, and anterior in 4.3%. Thorough clinical and radiological examinations are essential. Simple bending of the upper end of the ulna may help to avoid missing

Elbow fractures in the pediatric population are an exceedingly common injury, comprising 5% to 10% of all pediatric fractures, with supracondylar fractures being the most common of the subset. Radial neck fractures are less frequent, comprising only 1% of all pediatric fractures. We provide a case report of a 7-year-old girl with a left radial neck and proximal ulna fracture. A 7-year-old girl presented to the emergency department after falling off a rock wall the day before. Imaging showed a left proximal ulna and proximal radial neck fracture. The patient underwent percutaneous reduction and

INTRODUCTION: Proximal ulna fractures with a large zone of comminution, such as in the context of Monteggia injuries, require mechanically strong osteosyntheses as they occur in regions with high physiological joint load. Consequently, implant failure and pseudarthrosis are critical and devastating complications, especially with the background of mainly young patients being affected. An effective solution could be provided by adding a small second plate 90° angulated to the standard dorsal plate in the area of non-union. Thus, this study investigates whether, from a biomechanical point of view

OBJECTIVES: Triceps avulsion fractures have become an increasingly common postoperative complication of olecranon fracture repair with proximal ulna plate (PUP) fixation. The purpose of this study is to create an efficient, reproducible mechanism to mitigate this issue.
METHODS: Ten matched pair cadaveric specimens underwent a complete transverse osteotomy to simulate an olecranon fracture, followed by fracture reduction with a PUP. One arm from each pair underwent an additional augmented suture repair, where the triceps tendon was sutured directly to the plate. A custom jig was used to hold

BACKGROUND: Prevention of redisplacement is an issue after the treatment of fractures of the distal third of the radius in children. In this study, we used a locked wires fixator for this type of fracture and achieved favorable treatment outcomes.
METHODS: The subjects were 8 children with fractures of the distal third of the radius (male: 7, female: 1, mean age: 9.0 years old) who underwent surgery with locked wires fixators and were able to be evaluated 12 months after surgery. Immobilization was not applied after surgery. The locked wires fixator or K-wire was removed when the bridging cal

We describe a case of isolated physeal fracture of ulna distal end in a 13-year-old boy. This fracture type is uncommon, especially Salter-Harris type III of this injury has not been reported. Plain radiographs showed a small vertical fracture line at the ulnar distal end and an enlargement of epiphyseal plate at the base of ulnar styloid process. The present case was successfully managed with conservative treatment because of its minimal displacement.

Atypical fractures have been reported as a complication of long-standing bisphosphonate therapy and occur commonly in the subtrochanteric region or shaft of the femur showing typical radiographic features. We encountered a case of atypical fracture of the proximal one-third of the shaft of the ulna. Radiographic findings of this case differed from previously reported cases of ulnar fracture in terms of showing a transverse fracture line with cortical thickening and an oblique fracture line with anterior cortical spike. On the other hand, these findings were similar to radiographic features of
