Ultrasound-guided sampling of the lateral abdominal vein in the grey nurse shark (Carcharias taurus, Rafinesque 1810).

The paired lateral abdominal veins (LAV) provide alternative venipuncture sites in grey nurse sharks (Carcharias taurus, Rafinesque 1810) and their efficacy was assessed using morphometrics, necropsies, ultrasound-guided blood sampling and by comparing serum biochemistry between the LAV and caudal vein (CV) with values from the latter published previously. The mean length of the CV was 2.8% of total length (TL) whereas each LAV was 22.4% of TL and, when combined, was approximately 16 times longer than the CV. The mean tissue thickness overlying each LAV increased significantly (p < .001) with

Intravascular Ultrasound for the Peripheral Vasculature-Current Applications and New Horizons.

Intravascular ultrasound (IVUS) is a proven and rapidly developing imaging modality that can be used for a multitude of both diagnostic and interventional purposes. By allowing for superior intraluminal characterization, compared with angiography, IVUS has emerged as a technically valuable tool in interventional procedures such as transjugular intrahepatic portosystemic shunt/direct intrahepatic portosystemic shunt, venous interventions (May Thurner stenting, inferior vena cava filter placement, recanalization in the setting of chronic venous thrombosis/insufficiency), percutaneous fenestratio

Suprapubic catheter insertion using an ultrasound-guided technique and literature review.

What's known on the subject? and What does the study add? The conventional 'blind' technique for suprapubic catheter (SPC) insertion relies on adequate filling of the bladder to displace bowel away from the site of needle puncture. However, in a small percentage of patients this fails to happen, which can occasionally lead to life-threatening bowel injury. Recently published British Association of Urological Surgeons (BAUS) guidelines have recommended that ultrasonography (US) may be helpful to identify bowel loops and recommends its usage whenever possible. This paper describes the technique

Evaluation of the performance of ultrasonography and 99mTc-sestamibi scintigraphy for primary hyperparathyroidism surgery.

INTRODUCTION: Minimally invasive surgery has become the standard surgical attitude in primary hyperparathyroidism. It requires precise preoperative lesion localization. The aim of the present study was to evaluate the performance of ultrasonography and 99mTc-sestamibi scintigraphy in minimally invasive surgery for primary hyperparathyroidism. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A retrospective study included all patients managed surgically for primary hyperparathyroidism between January 2008 and November 2017 in the University Hospital of Brest (France). Two hundred and seventy-three patients underwent ul

Pelvic floor in females with anorectal malformations--findings on perineal ultrasonography and aspects of delivery mode.

BACKGROUND: Advice on the mode of delivery to females born with anorectal malformation (ARM) is needed. The primary aim was to evaluate the anatomy of the pelvic floor muscles in females with ARM operated with posterior sagittal anorectal plasty (PSARP). The second aim was to correlate the extent of muscle defects to the bowel symptoms. METHODS: This interventional study with perineal 4D/3D ultrasonography describes the smooth muscles in the intestinal wall (neo-IAS), external sphincter, levators and anal canal using a muscle score (0-6 worst). The bowel symptoms were prospectively registered

Ultrasound-guided thread lifting for the prevention of parotid gland and diagnosing parotid duct complications.

BACKGROUND: Thread lifting is a common minimally invasive plastic surgery procedure. Parotid gland injury caused by thread lifting is a known complication; however, visual evidence of this complication is lacking. OBJECTIVES: This study aimed to present cases of parotid gland injury by thread lifting shown using ultrasound and to discuss the importance of ultrasound detection of the location of the parotid gland before thread insertion. METHODS: This study included eight patients diagnosed with parotid gland perforation and one with parotid duct injury due to threads from November 2020 to Oc

Precise Terminology and Specified Catheter Insertion Length in Ultrasound-Guided Infraclavicular Central Vein Catheterization.

Background and Objectives: As the latest research encourages the ultrasound-guided infraclavicular central venous approach, due to the lateral puncture site displacement, in comparison to the anatomical landmark technique based on subclavian vein catheterization, the need to re-calculate the optimal catheter insertion length and possibly to rename the punctuated vessel emerges. Although naming a particular anatomical structure is a nomenclature issue, a suboptimal catheter position can be associated with multiple life-threatening complications and must be avoided. The main study objective is t

ULTRASOUND-GUIDED PERCUTANEOUS TREATMENT OF HEPATIC HYDATIDOSIS IN TWO RED-SHANKED DOUC LANGURS (PYGATHRIX NEMAEUS).

Hydatid disease caused by Echinococcus ortleppi is a major cause of morbidity and mortality for critically endangered captive langurs in northern Vietnam. The most common sites for hydatid cyst development are the liver and the lungs. Chemotherapy trials with albendazole alone or in combination with praziquantel in these langurs had varying results and in most cases were ineffective. Ultrasound-guided percutaneous aspiration of cystic fluid followed by instillation and re-aspiration of a scolicidal agent (PAIR technique), has gained importance in the treatment of active hepatic cysts in humans

Tissue response and retention of micro- and nanosized liposomes in infarcted mice myocardium after ultrasound-guided transthoracic injection.

Different carrier systems have been investigated for myocardial delivery of biopharmaceuticals for heart disease. Here, we aimed to evaluate the heart retention and tissue response of liposomes intended for cardiac drug delivery. Liposomes were produced by the lipid thin film hydration method followed by sonication. Cytocompatibility tests were performed in murine L929 fibroblasts and H2c9 cardiomyocytes using the Alamar Blue assay. In vivo experiments were assessed in a model of myocardial infarction induced by isoproterenol in mice. Cardiac delivery of fluorescent liposomes (rhodamine B-labe

Ultrasound-guided Treatments for the Painful Shoulder.

Shoulder pain is an extremely common condition. The painful shoulder may be the result of a wide spectrum of underlying pathological conditions, including calcific tendinopathy of the rotator cuff, subacromial-subdeltoid bursitis, acromioclavicular or glenohumeral arthritis, tenosynovitis of the long biceps tendon, rotator cuff lesions, and many other less common conditions. Ultrasound imaging is an effective tool for the diagnosis and also for the image guidance of treatment of the majority of these conditions. Several ultrasound-guided procedures are effective for pain relief, such as percut

Ultrasound-Guided Pleural Investigations: Fluid, Air, and Biopsy.

Pleural diseases are frequently encountered across multiple inpatient and outpatient settings, making pleural drainage and sampling one of the most common medical procedures. With the widespread adoption of bedside ultrasound examination, ultrasound machines are now readily available in many clinical settings, providing both diagnostic and procedural guidance. The modern management of pleural disease is dominated by ultrasound assessment with strong evidence supporting its use to guide pleural interventions. Here, we review the current landscape of ultrasound use to guide pleural drainage, pne

Application of Intralesion Ultrasound-Guided Laser Ablation for Plantar Foot Mass Involving Arteriovenous Fistula: A Case Report.

Penetrating and blunt trauma to the plantar aspect of the foot are common. Both penetrating and blunt trauma may be associated with an injury to the blood vessels, which may go undetected clinically. A minor puncture, blunt trauma and repeated blunt trauma can injure small arteries leading to an arteriovenous fistula (AVF). The arterial rupture leads to a system of veins creating a small AVF and appearing clinically as a blue colored, painful lesion. A case of such an injury is presented where the clinical examination, magnetic resonance arteriogram and point of service ultrasound with duplex

Development, evaluation, and overview of standardized training phantoms for abdominal ultrasound-guided interventions.

PURPOSE: Ultrasound (US) represents the primary approach for abdominal diagnosis and is regularly used to guide diagnostic and therapeutic interventions (INVUS). Due to possible serious INVUS complications, structured training concepts are required. Phantoms can facilitate teaching, but their use is currently restricted by complex manufacturing and short durability of the materials. Hence, the aim of this study was the development and evaluation of an optimized abdominal INVUS phantom. MATERIALS AND METHODS: Phantom requirements were defined in a structured research process: Skin-like surface
