BACKGROUND: A new type of umbilical vascular access routes is needed for the extracorporeal blood circuits, which are part of artificial placenta treatment. A sutureless gastroschisis closure provides a cosmetically appealing outcome. The umbilical cord is usually used as a covering material in a sutureless closure because it is a native tissue. However, during the staged closure with a silo placement, special attention is required to keep the umbilical cord moist. The authors report a simple technique to preserve the feasibility of the umbilical cord as a biologic dressing during the silo placement in staged gastroschisis closures.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate perinatal effects of umbilical cord entanglement (UCE) of different body parts.
METHODS: The database of a tertiary medical center was retrospectively searched for women who gave birth to a liveborn singleton newborn in 2014-2018. Those diagnosed postpartum with UCE were matched 1:10 with women who were not and compared for adverse obstetric and neonatal outcomes, overall and by site of entanglement.
RESULTS: A total of 14 299 women were evaluated, of whom 1243 were diagnosed with UCE: 78.7% neck, 26% trunk, 6.7% limb. UCE was associated with lower birth weight percent

OBJECTIVE: Clamping of the umbilical cord is part of the third stage of delivery. Delayed cord clamping (DCC) is recommended due to its contribution to prevention of anaemia. There is no evidence on the effect of DCC on maternal satisfaction. The aim of this study is to evaluate the effect of different sociodemographic and obstetric factors, including the timing of cord clamping, on maternal satisfaction with the birth experience in our healthcare system.
DESIGN: Pragmatic non-drug intervention study with simple random assignment of participating mothers (Clinical Trials N°: NCT03624335).

Human myiasis is a rare condition. It is more common in tropical regions. Umbilical cord myiasis has not previously been reported from a temperate climate, for example, New Jersey. We report a 9-day-old infant with umbilical cord myiasis. The maggots were identified by the entomologist as the larvae of Sarcophagidae, more commonly known as flesh flies.

We report a baby with an unusual umbilical cord swelling. On the antenatal scans, a cystic area within the umbilical cord near its insertion onto the abdominal wall was detected. Postnatally an unusually thick umbilical cord with a yellow fluid filled cyst at the base was noted. The fluid from the cyst was confirmed as urine and ultrasound confirmed patent urachus. Mesenchymal Stromal Cells (MSC) are key candidates for cellular therapies. Although most therapeutic applications have focused on adult bone marrow derived MSC, increasing evidence suggests that MSC are present within a wide range of tissues. Umbilical cord blood (CB) has been proven to be a valuable source of hematopoietic stem cells, but its therapeutic potential extends beyond the hematopoietic component suggesting regenerative potential in solid organs as well. OBJECTIVE: This study was undertaken to study the frequency and cause of fused umbilical arteries (FUAs).
STUDY DESIGN: Umbilical cord on the placental side was carefully examined for FUAs by continuous interval sections.
RESULTS: The frequency was 3.1% or 22 in 702 infants with the frequency in female infants of 4.1% being significantly higher than that in male infants of 2.0%. Umbilical cord anomalies can often be detected prenatally by ultrasound, but a definitive prenatal diagnosis is not always possible. We present a case with increasing edema of the Wharton's jelly followed by the development of pseudocysts in the proximal umbilical cord due to a patent urachus. The first abnormal findings were detected by ultrasound in the 14th week of gestation. Differential diagnoses and their influence on surveillance and birth management are discussed.

We present a case of intrauterine fetal death at 32 week's gestation with omphalocele, umbilical cord allantoic cyst and polyhydramnios. Ultrasound diagnosis of anomalies was performed at 23 weeks of gestation. Fetal karyotype was normal: 46 XX. This association has been found to have a high rate of chromosomal abnormalities, especially trisomy 18. It's difficult to explain the reason why intrauterine fetal death has happened; one possible hypothesis is that the cord cyst, compressing umbilical vessels, have caused intrauterine vascular compromise of blood flow.

The aim of this study was to assess the contribution of current obstetrical practice to the occurrence and complications of umbilical cord prolapse. Maternal and neonatal charts of 87 pregnancies complicated by true umbilical cord prolapse during a 5-year period were reviewed. Twin gestation and noncephalic presentations were common features (14 and 41%, respectively). Eighty-nine percent (77) of infants were delivered by cesarean section of which 29% were classical and 88% were primary. The mean gestational age at delivery was 34.0 +/- 6.0 weeks, and the mean birth weight was 2318 +/- 1159 g.

Umbilical cord arterial and venous blood gas values were compared in 63 twin pairs, of which 57 pairs had birth weights of 1500 g or more each. Small differences between the first and second twins existed for PO2, PCO2, and pH. However, bicarbonate values did not differ significantly. These cord gas differences represent minor respiratory aberrations, as reflected by a tendency toward carbon dioxide retention by the second twin. The epidemic abuse of phencyclidine (PCP) has become a major psychiatric issue within the past decade. With the assistance of highly sensitive capillary gas chromatographic-nitrogen detector measurements, PCP's true pervasiveness is only now being appreciated.
