Uranium speciation in coal bottom ash investigated via X-ray absorption fine structure and X-ray photoelectron spectra.

Similar to chromium contamination, the environmental contamination caused by uranium in radioactive coal bottom ash (CBA) is primarily dependent on the chemical speciation of uranium. However, the relationship between uranium speciation and environmental contamination has not been adequately studied. To determine the relationship between uranium speciation and environmental contamination, X-ray absorption fine structure (XAFS) and X-ray photoelectron spectra (XPS) analyses were performed to determine the uranium speciation in CBA exposed to different chemical environments and simulated natural

Removal of trace elements in three horizontal sub-surface flow constructed wetlands in the Czech Republic.

Between March 2006 and June 2008 removal of 34 trace elements was measured on a monthly basis at three horizontal-flow constructed wetlands in the Czech Republic designed to treat municipal wastewater. In general, the results indicated a very wide range of removal efficiencies among studied elements. The highest degree of removal (average of 90%) was found for aluminum. High average removal was also recorded for zinc (78%). Elements removed in the range of 50-75% were uranium, antimony, copper, lead, molybdenum, chromium, barium, iron and gallium. Removal of cadmium, tin, mercury, silver, sele

Assessment of larval deformities and selenium accumulation in northern pike (Esox lucius) and white sucker (Catostomus commersoni) exposed to metal mining effluent.

Uranium mining and milling operations in northern Saskatchewan (Canada) release effluents with elevated levels of certain trace metals and metalloids, including selenium. The goal of the present study was to evaluate the presence of selenium-induced deformities in northern pike (Esox lucius) and white sucker (Catostomus commersoni) larvae originating from adults collected downstream of a uranium mine. Eggs were fertilized in the field and incubated in the laboratory following a two-way (crossover) analysis-of-variance experimental design to discriminate effects from maternal transfer versus th

The magnetosome model: insights into the mechanisms of bacterial biomineralization.

Though the most ready example of biomineralization is the calcium phosphate of vertebrate bones and teeth, many bacteria are capable of creating biominerals inside their cells. Because of the diversity of these organisms and the minerals they produce, their study may reveal aspects of the fundamental mechanisms of biomineralization in more complex organisms. The best-studied case of intracellular biomineralization in bacteria is the magnetosome, an organelle produced by a diverse group of aquatic bacteria that contains single-domain crystals of the iron oxide magnetite (Fe3O4) or the iron sulf

The quenching effect of uranyl species in the photoluminescence emission and visible-light-driven water dissociation activity of CdS and TiO2 photocatalysts.

Anchoring of uranyl species (2-4 mol%) led to the complete quenching of photoluminescence emission and the visible-light-driven water photodissociation activity of TiO2 (Degussa-P25) and a hydrothermally synthesized CdS photocatalyst. Photophysical measurements revealed a fast relaxation and the transfer of photogenerated electrons/energy from the TiO2 or CdS substrate to the acceptor uranyl moieties. Besides the position of flat band levels, significant overlap of the absorption/emission spectra of the host matrix and the surface-bound UO2(2+) species is responsible for this reverse energy tr

Application of iron sulfide particles for groundwater and soil remediation: A review.

Rapid industrialization and urbanization have resulted in elevated concentrations of hazardous inorganic and organic contaminants in groundwater and soil, which has become a paramount concern to the environment and the public health. In recent years, iron sulfide (FeS), a major constituent of acid-volatile sulfides, has elicited extensive interests in environmental remediation due to its ubiquitous presence and high treatment efficiency in anoxic environment. This paper provides a comprehensive review on recent advances in: (1) synthesis of FeS particles (including nanoscale FeS); and (2) reac

Spectroscopic study on the reactions of bis-salophen with uranyl and then with fructose 1,6-bisphosphate and the analytical application.

The chelating reaction of bis-salophen with uranyl to form binuclear complex uranyl-bis-salophen (UBS) was studied by fluorescence spectroscopy. The coordination reaction of UBS with fructose 1,6-bisphosphate (F-1,6-BP) to form supramolecular polymer was then studied by resonance light scattering (RLS) spectroscopy. The reaction of bis-salophen with uranyl results in a remarkable enhancement of fluorescence intensity. The maximum emission wavelength of the fluorescence is at 471nm. The reaction of UBS with F-1,6-BP results in a remarkable enhancement of RLS intensity. The maximum scattering wa

The effect of saline loading on uranium-induced acute renal failure in rats.

Studies were performed to examine the effect of saline loading on uranium-induced acute renal failure (ARF) in rats. Forty-eight hours after the i.v. injection of uranyl acetate (UA, 5 mg/kg), inulin clearance rate (Cin) decreased to approximately 43% of the control value in water drinking rats (P less than 0.005). Animals receiving continuous isotonic saline infusion following UA showed higher urine flow and Cin (60% of control, P less than 0.01), and lessened intratubular cast formation when compared with water-drinking ARF rats. A short-term saline infusion following UA did not attenuate th

The mobility of thorium, uranium and rare earth elements from Mid Ordovician black shales to acid waters and its removal by goethite and schwertmannite.

Previous studies have addressed the occurrence of Acid Rock Drainage (ARD) affecting La Silva stream due to the generation of large dumps of Middle Ordovician black shales during the construction of a highway close to El Bierzo (León, Spain). This ARD was characterized by sulphated acid waters with high concentration of heavy metals and anomalies in dissolved thorium (Th) and uranium (U). In the present study, we analyse in depth black shales and water, streambed sediments and precipitates of La Silva stream and its tributaries using different petrographic, mineralogical and geochemical approa

The plasma membrane-associated cation-binding protein PCaP1 of Arabidopsis thaliana is a uranyl-binding protein.

Uranium (U) is a naturally-occurring radionuclide that is toxic to living organisms. Given that proteins are primary targets of U(VI), their identification is an essential step towards understanding the mechanisms of radionuclide toxicity, and possibly detoxification. Here, we implemented a chromatographic strategy including immobilized metal affinity chromatography to trap protein targets of uranyl in Arabidopsis thaliana. This procedure allowed the identification of 38 uranyl-binding proteins (UraBPs) from root and shoot extracts. Among them, UraBP25, previously identified as plasma membrane

Uranium phosphate biomineralization by fungi.

Geoactive soil fungi were investigated for phosphatase-mediated uranium precipitation during growth on an organic phosphorus source. Aspergillus niger and Paecilomyces javanicus were grown on modified Czapek-Dox medium amended with glycerol 2-phosphate (G2P) as sole P source and uranium nitrate. Both organisms showed reduced growth on uranium-containing media but were able to extensively precipitate uranium and phosphorus-containing minerals on hyphal surfaces, and these were identified by X-ray powder diffraction as uranyl phosphate species, including potassium uranyl phosphate hydrate (KPUO6

Reduction of Fe(III), Cr(VI), U(VI), and Tc(VII) by Deinococcus radiodurans R1.

Deinococcus radiodurans is an exceptionally radiation-resistant microorganism capable of surviving acute exposures to ionizing radiation doses of 15,000 Gy and previously described as having a strictly aerobic respiratory metabolism. Under strict anaerobic conditions, D. radiodurans R1 reduced Fe(III)-nitrilotriacetic acid coupled to the oxidation of lactate to CO(2) and acetate but was unable to link this process to growth. D. radiodurans reduced the humic acid analog anthraquinone-2,6-disulfonate (AQDS) to its dihydroquinone form, AH(2)DS, which subsequently transferred electrons to the Fe(I

PBK modeling for metals. Examples with lead, uranium, and chromium.

Physiologically-based models for metals differ in several key respects from models for organic compounds. Although sequestration by binding to specific metal-binding proteins in liver, kidney, and red cell may be important, neither the magnitude and pattern of metabolism nor potential accumulation in fat is a component of models of metal kinetics. In addition, the long residence times of bone-seeking elements require that bone turnover and metabolism be incorporated into physiologically-based models for these elements. Three mechanism (rapid exchange at bone/blood interfaces, trapping or incor

An Integrated Self-Powered Photoelectrocatalytic System for Quadruple-Function Water Remediation: Organic Degradation, Radionuclide Recycling, Energy Recovery, and Toxicity Evaluation.

The pervasive prevalence of organic pollutants in water bodies presents major obstacles to traditional uranic recovery methods. Herein, a novel self-powered catalytic system has been developed, featuring a TGCNM heterojunction cathode paired with a carbon/chitin nanofilm nanoarray (CNF) and a silicon PVC photovoltaic (Si PVC) photoanode. This advanced assembly enables the concurrent reduction of U(VI), degradation of pollutants, and generation of electricity. The synergy between the functional groups and redox-active sites on the TGCNM heterojunction promotes efficient adsorption and stepwise

Analysis of accumulation and phytotoxicity mechanism of uranium and cadmium in two sweet potato cultivars.

The purpose of this study was to reveal the accumulation and phytotoxicity mechanism of sweet potato (Ipomoea batatas L.) roots following exposure to toxic levels of uranium (U) and cadmium (Cd). We selected two accumulation-type sweet potato cultivars as experimental material. The varietal differences in U and Cd accumulation and physiological metabolism were analyzed by a hydroponic experiment. High concentrations of U and Cd inhibited the growth and development of sweet potato and damaged the microstructure of root. The roots were the main accumulating organs of U and Cd in both sweet potat

Characteristics of solidified products containing radioactive molten salt waste.

The molten salt waste from a pyroprocess to recover uranium and transuranic elements is one of the problematic radioactive wastes to be solidified into a durable wasteform for its final disposal. By using a novel method, named as the GRSS (gel-route stabilization/solidification) method, a molten salt waste was treated to produce a unique wasteform. A borosilicate glass as a chemical binder dissolves the silicate compounds in the gel products to produce one amorphous phase while most of the phosphates are encapsulated by the vitrified phase. Also, Cs in the gel product is preferentially situate

Synthesis and crystal structure of bis-[(1E,6E)-1,7-bis-(4-acet-yloxy-3-meth-oxy-phen-yl)hepta-1,6-diene-3,5-dionato(1-)-κ2 O,O'](methanol)dioxidouranium(VI) toluene monosolvate.

The first uranium-curcuminoid coordination compound has been synthesized and structurally characterized. The title complex, [U(O)2(C25H23O8)2(CH3OH)]·C6H5CH3, crystallizes in the monoclinic space group C2/c. The neutral complex comprises a uran-yl(VI) unit ({O=U=O}2+) coordinated by two monoanionic bidentate 4,4'-di-acetyl-curcuminato ligands (C25H23O8) and one methanol co-ligand, resulting in a distorted penta-gonal-bipyramidal coordination geometry. Crystal structure and Hirshfeld surface analysis of bis-(benzoyl-acetonato)(ethanol)dioxidouranium(VI).

A new uranium metal-organic complex salt, [U(C10H9O2)2O2(C2H6O)], with benzoyl acetone, namely, bis-(benzoyl-acetonato)(ethanol)dioxidouranium(VI), was synthesized. The compound has monoclinic P21/n symmetry. The geometry of the seven-coordinate U atom is penta-gonal bipyramidal, with the uranyl oxygen atoms in apical positions. In the complex, the ligands bind to the metal through oxygen atoms. Additional weak O-H⋯O contacts between the cations and anions consolidate the three-dimensional arrangement of the structure. On the Hirshfeld surface, the largest contributions come from the short con
