Distribution of dengue vectors in neighborhoods with different urbanization types of Manaus, state of Amazonas, Brazil.

Aedes aegypti and Ae. albopictus are vectors of dengue viruses, which cause endemic disease in the city of Manaus, capital of the state of Amazonas, Brazil. More than 53 thousand cases have been registered in this city since the first epidemic in 1998. We evaluated the hypothesis that different ecological conditions result in different patterns of vector infestation in Manaus, by measuring the infestation level in four neighborhoods with different urbanization patterns, during the rainy (April), dry (August), and transitional (November) seasons. Ae. aegypti predominated throughout the study ar

Urbanization and substance use in left-behind children and adolescents: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Inequalities in job opportunities between urban and rural regions have driven many parents to move from rural to urban regions with aims to improve household income. Financial and political barriers prevent children from moving with their parents, meaning that their children become left-behind in rural regions. This study aims to meta-analyse the risk of drinking, smoking, illicit drug use and drunk experiences in left behind children (LBC) and non-LBC. RECENT FINDINGS: Previous studies have indicated the negative effects of prolonged parental separation on children and ado

Climate and urbanization drive changes in the habitat suitability of Schistosoma mansoni competent snails in Brazil.

Schistosomiasis is a neglected tropical disease caused by Schistosoma parasites. Schistosoma are obligate parasites of freshwater Biomphalaria and Bulinus snails, thus controlling snail populations is critical to reducing transmission risk. As snails are sensitive to environmental conditions, we expect their distribution is significantly impacted by global change. Here, we used machine learning, remote sensing, and 30 years of snail occurrence records to map the historical and current distribution of forward-transmitting Biomphalaria hosts throughout Brazil. We identified key features influenc

Does environmental pollution inhibit urbanization in China? A new perspective through residents' medical and health costs.

Health problems caused by environmental pollution may affect the process of urbanization in China. Therefore, this study, against the backdrop of promoting new-type urbanization, evaluates the level of China's urbanization comprehensively using the fully arranged polygon graphical index method. It uses a dynamic threshold panel model to study the potential non-linear relationship between environmental pollution (wastewater, sulfur dioxide, and solid wastes) and urbanization under different health costs of residents. Our findings show that environmental pollution has inhibited the improvement o

Urbanization and climate change impacts on surface water quality: Enhancing the resilience by reducing impervious surfaces.

Climate change and urbanization are key factors affecting the future of water quality in urbanized catchments. The work reported in this paper is an evaluation of the combined and relative impact of climate change and urbanization on the water quality of receiving water bodies in the context of a highly urbanized watershed served by a combined sewer system (CSS) in northern Italy. The impact is determined by an integrated modelling study involving two years of field campaigns. The results obtained from the case study show that impervious urban surfaces and rainfall intensity are significant pr

Urbanization and cattle density are determinants in the exposure to anticoagulant rodenticides of non-target wildlife.

The persistence and toxicity of second generation anticoagulant rodenticides (SGARs) in animal tissues make these compounds dangerous by biomagnification in predatory species. Here we studied the levels of SGARs in non-target species of wildlife and the environmental factors that influence such exposure. Liver samples of terrestrial vertebrates (n = 244) found dead between 2007 and 2016 in the region of Aragón (NE Spain) were analysed. The presence of SGARs was statistically analysed with binary or ordinal logistic models to study the effect of habitat characteristics including human populatio

Tuberculosis infection in rural labor migrants in Shenzhen, China: Emerging challenge to tuberculosis control during urbanization.

During China's urbanization process, rural labor migrants have been suggested to be one important bridge population to change urban-rural distribution on tuberculosis (TB) burden. Aiming to estimate the prevalence of TB infection and to track the active disease development in rural labor migrants, a prospective study was conducted in Shenzhen city, southern China. TB infection was detected using interferon-γ release assay (IGRA). Here we mainly report the characteristics of TB infection in the study population based on the baseline survey. A total of 4,422 eligible participants completed basel

Impact of rapid urbanization on mosquitoes and their disease transmission potential in Accra and Tema, Ghana.

The total of 75 mosquito species recorded in Accra have declined to 28 species. Contributing factors to this decline and the reduction in prevalence of malaria and bancroftian filariasis in Accra presently include extensive water pollution and a fairly high daily mosquito mortality due to several factors including loss of natural adult resting places, use of mosquito repellents and the probable increase of Anopheles arabiensis population. Presently low yellow fever incidence is due inter alia to loss of its feral vectors and reduced intradomiciliary breeding of Aedes aegypti (L) although more

Urban Therapy-Urban Health Path as an Innovative Urban Function to Strengthen the Psycho-Physical Condition of the Elderly.

The current approach to stimulating elderly physical activity mostly uses medical rehabilitation methods or popular forms of outdoor recreation. In the context of an ageing population, there is a growing demand for innovative rehabilitation methods that use information technology. In this article, we present the Urban Health Path as an innovative form of activation for older people using urban therapy, where the architectural elements, such as details, façade features, and urban furniture, inspire movement and attentiveness in the experience of space. The concept is supported by a mobile appli

Urban asthma.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: To review the possible reasons why the prevalence and morbidity of asthma are greater in those living in an urban setting. RECENT FINDINGS: Urban asthma is associated with exposure to air pollution, urban allergens, and violence. Outdoor air pollution is a particular problem in urban areas and affects children more than adults. Asthma has been shown to be exacerbated by ozone, respirable particulates, and nitrogen dioxide. Exposure to high point sources of pollutants such as heavy traffic is of particular concern. Urban allergens include cockroach, mouse, and rat. Cockroach

Urbanization, mental health, and oral health inequalities in left-behind youth: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: This systematic review and meta-analysis evaluated mental and oral health outcomes among left-behind children (LBC) affected by urbanization-driven rural-urban labour migration. Although mental health impacts of parental migration are increasingly recognized, oral health outcomes remain underexplored. This review synthesizes available evidence, quantifies disparities, and identifies shared social and structural determinants. RECENT FINDINGS: Thirty-three studies met inclusion criteria. Pooled analyses revealed significantly higher depressive symptoms among LBC compared to n

Urbanization-Associated Microbial Diversity Loss and Its Impact on Elderly Health: Integrating Environmental and Host Microbiome Dynamics.

Urbanization is strongly associated with microbial diversity loss in both built environments and elderly gut microbiomes, with significant health consequences. This study across 12 rural-to-urban care facilities in eastern China analysed 320 environmental and 120 faecal samples. Urbanization progressively reduced microbial alpha diversity in air, surfaces, and resident guts. Urban environments showed increased opportunistic pathogens and antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs), alongside decreased beneficial taxa and short-chain fatty acid pathways. Strong environment-host microbiome concordance wa

Association between a radical urbanization index and lung disease risk in China: longitudinal evidence from the CHARLS.

BACKGROUND: Rapid urbanization has been a defining feature of China's development, yet its implications for respiratory health and the role of environmental conditions remain incompletely understood. We examined the association between urbanization intensity, measured by a radical urbanization index reflecting accelerated land expansion, population concentration, and economic growth, and the risk of chronic lung disease among Chinese adults. METHODS: We analyzed longitudinal data from 7,405 participants in the China Health and Retirement Longitudinal Study from 2011 to 2020. Incident chronic

Disparities in the burden of tuberculosis associated with urbanization across 178 countries and territories: an observational study.

BACKGROUND: Tuberculosis (TB) remains the leading cause of death from a single infectious agent. However, there is limited quantitative evidence on the impact of urbanization on TB burden. We aimed to assess the relationship between urbanization and the global TB burden. METHODS: Using multi-source data, we developed a composite index of urbanization across 178 countries and territories from 2012 to 2019, incorporating the proportion of urban population, the proportion of population using improved sanitation, nighttime light intensity, normalized difference vegetation index, and per capita gr

Pharmaceuticals, illicit drugs and their metabolites in fish from Argentina: Implications for protected areas influenced by urbanization.

Because an understanding of aquatic bioaccumulation of human pharmaceuticals in Latin America is limited, this area was recently identified as a priority environmental quality research need. We examined bioaccumulation of twenty-seven pharmaceuticals, illicit drugs and their metabolites in muscle, liver and gills of multiple fish species (Rhamdia quelen, Hypostomus commersoni, Hoplias lacerdae, Prochilodus lineatus) from an urban river receiving wastewater discharges (Paraná) and a lotic system (Acaraguá) without direct wastewater sources, which runs through a protected area.
