Optimizing nitrogen (N) management is essential for improving grain yield, quality, and nitrogen use efficiency (NUE) in low-gluten wheat, yet the optimal fertilizer strategy remains unclear. A two-year field experiment was conducted to evaluate the effects of common urea (CU), controlled-release urea (CRU), and their combination on yield, quality, NUE, and soil N content in low-gluten wheat. The results showed that, compared with 100% common urea (CU100), 100% controlled-release urea (CRU100) increased grain yield by 8.51% in 2023 and 14.3% in 2024, while 80% controlled-release urea and 20% c

Activities of renal urea enzymes were studied in normally fed (21% dietary protein) rats and rats deprived of protein (6% dietary protein) for 3 weeks. Protein deprivation resulted in growth retardation and defective urine concentrating ability. Compared to rats on an optimal diet containing 21% of protein, the protein starved animals had decreased concentrations of protein and urea in serum, reduced urinary excretion of urea and decreased levels of all five urea cycle enzyme activities in the liver. In the kidney, however, protein malnutrition resulted in a significant increase in arginase sp

BACKGROUND: In recent years, results on the association between serum uric acid (UA) and pregnancy outcomes have been inconsistent, and the association between urea nitrogen (UN) and adverse pregnancy outcomes in normal pregnant women has not been reported. Thus, we examined the association of UA and UN levels during gestation with the risk of adverse pregnancy outcomes in a relatively large population.
METHODS: A total of 1602 singleton mothers from Union Shenzhen Hospital of Huazhong University of Science and Technology at January 2015 to December 2018 were included. Both UA and UN levels w

Inhibitors of kidney urea transporter (UT) proteins have potential use as salt-sparing diuretics ('urearetics') with a different mechanism of action than diuretics that target salt transporters. To study UT inhibition in rats, we screened about 10,000 drugs, natural products and urea analogs for inhibition of rat UT-A1. Drug and natural product screening found nicotine, sanguinarine and an indolcarbonylchromenone with IC50 of 10-20 μM. Urea analog screening found methylacetamide and dimethylthiourea (DMTU). DMTU fully and reversibly inhibited rat UT-A1 and UT-B by a noncompetitive mechanism wi

Tidepool sculpins live in a variable environment where water temperature, salinity, gas tensions, and pH can change considerably with the daily tide cycle. Tidepool sculpins are primarily ammoniotelic, with 8-17% of nitrogen wastes excreted as urea. The majority of net ammonia (J(net) amm; 85%) and urea (J(net) urea; 74%) excretion occurred across the gill, with the remainder excreted across the skin, the kidney, and/or gut. Acute (2h) exposure to 50% seawater significantly increased J(net) urea (2.8-fold), but reduced J(net) amm (3.5-fold). In fish exposed to 50% seawater for 1 week, J(net) u

The kinetics of endogenous urea were compared during the last month of pregnancy, lactation, and a nonpregnant, nonlactating control period in Sardi sheep kept on a constant feed level. Urea entry rate estimated by injections of [14C]urea rose by 36% during pregnancy. Renal urea excretion was reduced by 40% during pregnancy and by 28% during lactation. Consequently, fractional urea recycling was greater during pregnancy and, to some extent, during lactation than during the control period. In a second series of experiments, glomerular filtration rate increased by 48% and urea filtration rate ro

Balance experiments were performed on six normal young geese and on six geese with a ligated caecum. The ration consisted of 43.25% barley, 30% sugar beet slices, 20% cellulose, 1.4% maize germ oil, 3% mineral mixture, 1% concentrate of vitamins and growth factors, 1.25% urea and 0.1% lysine. Daily nitrogen balance was similar in the two groups (average 1051 mg in the controls and 1090 mg in the experimental birds). Crude protein digestibility was 82.4 +/- 1.1% in the controls and 84.9 +/- 1% in the experimental birds (a significant difference). The bacterial flora of the caecum seemed to have

Herein, we report a mild thermal assisted process for urea synthesis through a one-pot tandem process using sodium nitrate (NaNO3) and carbon dioxide (CO2) in the presence of iron filings (f-Fe) and hydrogen peroxide at ∼150 °C and ∼10 bar CO2 pressure. The urea formed was qualitatively and quantitatively (∼2.3 mM) analyzed using the diacetyl monoxime (DAMO) test and confirmed by 1H nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) analysis. A plausible mechanism for the urea synthesis was proposed based on several batch experiments, including control, identifying the intermediate, and radical trapping experim

Electrocatalytic coupling of carbon dioxide and nitrate provides a sustainable route for urea synthesis. However, constrained by the ambiguous intermediate reaction pathways, such systems typically require a highly negative potential (≤ -0.5 V vs RHE) to achieve high urea yields. This inevitably results in prohibitive electricity expenses, which account for approximately 48% of the total expenditure for urea electrosynthesis and represent a major bottleneck hindering this promising approach. Herein, a vector-controlled *CO intermediate transport strategy is reported to direct the coupling path

Electrocatalytic urea synthesis from carbon dioxide (CO2) and nitrate (NO3 -) offers a promising alternative to traditional industrial methods. However, current catalysts face limitations in the supplies of CO* and Nrelated* intermediates, and their coupling, resulting in unsatisfactory urea production efficiency and energy consumption. To overcome these challenges, we carried out tandem electrosynthesis approach using ruthenium dioxide-supported palladium-gold alloys (Pd2Au1/RuO2). This catalyst system effectively catalyzes CO2-to-CO* conversion on Pd2Au1 and NO3 --to-NH2* conversion on RuO2.

Urea cycle disorders (UCD) are inborn errors of metabolism caused by deficiency of enzymes required to convert nitrogen from ammonia into urea. Current paradigms of treatment focus on dietary manipulations, ammonia scavenger drugs, and liver transplantation. The aim of this study was to describe the characteristics and indication of liver transplantation in UCD in a tertiary hospital. We performed a retrospective study of children with UCD seen in the period 2000-2021. Data was collected on clinical onset, hyperammonemia severity, evolution and liver transplantation. There were 33 patients in

BACKGROUND: Urea cycle disorders are congenital metabolism errors that affect ammonia elimination. Clinical signs and prognosis are strongly influenced by peak ammonia levels. Numerous triggers associated with metabolic decompensation have been described with many of them, including fasting or stress, being related to the perioperative period.
AIMS: We aimed to assess perioperative complications in pediatric patients with urea cycle disorders requiring general anesthesia in our center.
METHODS: We reviewed the clinical history of all the pediatric patients with a confirmed urea cycle disorde

Urea carboxylic acids, products of aryl hydantoin hydrolysis, were recently identified as a new antischistosomal chemotype. We now describe a baseline structure-activity relationship (SAR) for this compound series. With one exception, analogs of lead urea carboxylic acid 2 were quite polar with Log D7.4 values ranging from -1.9 to 1.8, had high aqueous solubilities in the range of 25-100 µg/mL, and were metabolically stable. None of the compounds had measurable in vitro antischistosomal activity or cytotoxicity, but four of these had moderate worm burden reduction (WBR) values of 42-70% when t

Urea formaldehyde (UF) resin residues generate many poisonous chemicals during traditional disposal technologies for organic hazardous wastes. In this study, hydrothermal hydrolysis was developed to decompose, remove, and recycle cured UF resin. Under 140 °C and 2 h of hydrothermal process, 20 mL of either 2 M HCl or 30 w.t. % of formaldehyde solutions can decompose as much as 1.7 g of cured UF resin. In addition, from the attenuated total reflection Fourier-transform infrared spectroscopy (ATR-FTIR), gas chromatography-mass spectroscopy (GCMS), X-ray diffraction (XRD), and 1H nuclear magnetic

To investigate whether the concentration of uridine in plasma is related to the urinary excretion of urea, 45 healthy male subjects with normouricemia and normal blood pressure were studied after providing informed consent. Immediately after collection of 24-hour urine, blood samples were drawn after an overnight fast except for water. The contents of ingested foods during the 24-hour urine collection period were described by the subjects and analyzed by a dietician. Simple regression analysis showed that plasma uridine was correlated with the urinary excretions of urea (R = 0.41, P < .01), ur
