Risk factors associated with recurrent febrile urinary tract infection in children with neurogenic bladder who perform clean intermittent catheterization.

OBJECTIVE: To identify the clinical and urodynamic risk factors associated with the development of recurrent febrile urinary tract infections (FUTIs) in children with neurogenic bladder (NB) who perform clean intermittent catheterization (CIC). METHODS: Children with NB receiving CIC were prospectively enrolled from January to December 2019 and followed up prospectively for 2 years. All data were compared between occasional (0-1 FUTI) and recurrent FUTIs (≥2 FUTI) groups. In addition, the risk factors for recurrent FUTIs in children were evaluated. RESULTS: Complete data from 321 children we

Emergence of extended-spectrum β-lactamase-producing Escherichia coli in catheter-associated urinary tract infection in neurogenic bladder patients.

BACKGROUND: Catheter-associated urinary tract infection (CAUTI) is a common clinic problem. The purpose of this study was to investigate recent trends in CAUTI in neurogenic bladder patients focusing on extended-spectrum β-lactamase (ESBL)-producing Escherichia coli. METHODS: Isolates from the urine of neurogenic bladder patients with UTI were investigated. Nine strains of ESBL-producing E coli were assayed by molecular strain typing using the Diversilab system for repetitive-sequence-based polymerase chain reaction (rep-PCR). RESULTS: E coli accounted for most of the bacteria (74.1% to 81.0

Lower urinary tract dysfunction in the central nervous system neurogenic bladder and the real-life treatment outcome of botulinum toxin A.

Neurogenic lower urinary tract dysfunction (NLUTD) is common in patients with central nervous system (CNS) lesions. Cases of cerebrovascular accidents (CVA), Parkinson's disease, dementia, and other intracranial lesions develop poor bladder control with or without urinary difficulty due to loss of cortical perception of bladder filling sensation and poor coordination of urethral sphincter relaxation during reflex micturition. Patients with CNS lesions usually have overactive bladder (OAB) symptoms, including urgency, frequency, incontinence, voiding symptoms of dysuria, large postvoid residual

Laparoscopy-Assisted Cutaneous Vesicostomy in Combination with Radical Nephrectomy in an Adult Patient with Neurogenic Bladder and Difficulty with Permanent Urinary Catheterization.

Background: Cutaneous vesicostomy is a urinary diversion for chronic urinary retention caused by neurogenic bladder. In this procedure, urine is drained directly from the bladder into a pouch attached to the lower abdomen, where the use of a catheter is unnecessary. Although complications of this procedure have been described, such as stoma stenosis, bladder prolapse, bladder calculi, and peristomal dermatitis, it is useful for patients who have difficulty with permanent bladder catheterization. The laparoscopy-assisted technique for cutaneous vesicostomy has not been described in the existing

Efficacy and tolerance of norfloxacin in treatment of complicated urinary tract infection in outpatients with neurogenic bladder secondary to spinal cord injury.

We studied the efficacy of a fourteen-day course of the fluoroquinolone, norfloxacin, in a group of 69 catheter-free spinal cord injury (SCI) outpatients who experienced a total of seventy-nine urinary tract infection (UTI) episodes. A total of 114 bacterial strains representing twenty species, including sixteen Pseudomonas aeruginosa, all susceptible to norfloxacin, were isolated from initial urine cultures. Mid-treatment cultures in 58/79 (73%) cases were negative. Cultures taken five to seven days after completing treatment in 42 cases (53%) were negative. In the remaining 37 there was pers

Urinary NGAL and renalase as non-invasive biomarkers for detection of deterioration of kidney function and kidney scarring in children with neurogenic bladder.

BACKGROUND: Urinary biomarkers such as neutrophil gelatinase-associated lipocalin (NGAL) and renalase hold promise for assessing kidney health, yet their role in the pediatric neurogenic bladder (NB) remains unclear. This study evaluates their clinical utility in detecting kidney dysfunction and their association with disease severity. METHODS: A cross-sectional study included 44 patients with NB and 45 age- and gender-matched healthy children (reference group). Urinary NGAL and renalase levels were measured using ELISA. Patients with NB were categorized based on glomerular filtration rate (G

Urinary Diversion with Left Sided Ileal Conduit for Neurogenic Bladder in a Patient with Sacral Agenesis and Situs Inversus: A Case Report.

Sacral agenesis is a rare cause of neurogenic bladder which leads to urinary incontinence, recurrent urinary tract infections, and progressive renal dysfunction. The coexistence with situs inversus adds anatomical complexity, posing challenges in clinical and surgical management. We reported a case of a 23-year-old male with sacral agenesis and situs inversus presenting with incontinence and recurrent urinary tract infections. The patient was non-compliant to clean intermittent selfcatheterization. He underwent successful urinary diversion with a left-sided ileal conduit. Postoperative recover

Diagnosis and localization of a complicated urinary tract infection in neurogenic bladder disease by tubular proteinuria and serum prostate specific antigen.

INTRODUCTION: Urinary tract infection is the most frequent complication occurring in patients with spinal cord injuries and can cause renal failure and male infertility. We used the urinary alpha-1-microglobulin (alpha 1Mg) as a marker for pyelonephritis and the serum prostate specific antigen (PSA) as a marker for prostatitis with reference to the currently available methods. The aim of our study is (1) to differentiate between upper (pyelonephritis) and lower urinary tract infection (cystitis, prostatitis) in neurogenic bladder disease, (2) to determine if high (< or = 38.5 degrees C) fever

Bladder wall elasticity in neurogenic bladder: Insights from shear wave ultrasound elastography and its correlation with functional and structural parameters of upper and lower urinary tract.

INTRODUCTION: Children with neurogenic bladder (NB) exhibit increased bladder-wall stiffness, yet non-invasive tools to quantify this remain limited. In this study, we assessed whether shear-wave elastography (SWE) distinguishes NB from healthy bladder and explored its relationship with routine upper- and lower-tract investigations. METHODS: In this prospective single-centre study, children with NB and age-matched controls underwent bladder SWE. Young's modulus of elasticity (YME, kPa) was measured in the anterior bladder wall at two filling states: full bladder (100 % estimated capacity) and

Beyond the urothelium: Interplay between autonomic nervous system and bladder inflammation in urinary tract infection, bladder pain syndrome with interstitial cystitis and neurogenic lower urinary tract dysfunction in spinal cord injury-ICI-RS 2023.

INTRODUCTION: Inflammation and neuronal hypersensitivity are reactive protective mechanisms after urothelial injury. In lower urinary tract dysfunctions (LUTD), such as urinary tract infection (UTI), bladder pain syndrome with interstitial cystitis (BPS/IC) and neurogenic LUTD after spinal cord injury (SCI), chronic inflammation can develop. It is unclear how the protective reactionary inflammation escalates into chronic disease in some patients. METHODS: During its 2023 meeting in Bristol, the International Consultation on Incontinence-Research Society (ICI-RS) reviewed the urothelial and in
