Steps toward identification of a novel cue-positive overactive bladder phenotype in women with high-bother urinary urgency.

OBJECTIVE: The objective of this study was to investigate the relationship between situational cues (running water, stress, cold, etc.) and overactive bladder (OAB) symptoms. METHODS: Women scheduled for urodynamic studies for clinical indications completed surveys to characterize OAB (ICIQ-OAB and OAB-V3) and responses to situational cues (validated long-form cues survey and a novel short-form cues survey). Participants were divided into two groups (Low-Bother urgency vs. High-Bother urgency), and OAB and cue survey responses were compared. RESULTS: A total of 47 participants were enrolled

Performance of urinary biomarkers in differentiating dysfunctional voiding in women with overactive bladder syndrome: a prospective pilot study.

PURPOSE: Dysfunctional voiding (DV) in women is a common disorder that causes bladder outlet obstruction (BOO) and may aggravate overactive bladder (OAB) symptoms. The diagnosis of DV relies on clinical alertness and videourodynamic study (VUDS). In this pilot study, we aimed to explore the diagnostic potential of urinary biomarkers in women with DV. METHODS: Women who visited our institute for the management of OAB were enrolled in this prospective study. Urine samples were collected before treatment and urinary proteins were quantified using enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay (ELISA) kits. P

Is benign prostatic obstruction surgery indicated for improving overactive bladder symptoms in men with lower urinary tract symptoms?

PURPOSE OF REVIEW: Lower urinary tract symptoms (LUTS) in men are highly prevalent, and include both storage and voiding symptoms in many cases. The effect of benign prostatic obstruction (BPO) relief on storage symptoms remains unclear. RECENT FINDINGS: The present review summarizes data about the relation between overactive bladder (OAB), voiding symptoms, and urodynamic characteristics in men with LUTS. Pathomechanisms of OAB in a context of BPO are reviewed. Rates of persistent bladder dysfunction after BPO relief are described along with predictive factors of persisting OAB. SUMMARY: OA

Effectiveness of vitamin D supplementation in managing urinary incontinence and overactive bladder: a systematic review and meta-analysis.

BACKGROUND: urinary incontinence (UI) and overactive bladder (OAB) are common lower urinary tract symptoms that significantly impact quality of life. Conventional pharmacologic treatments are often associated with side effects and limited efficacy, highlighting the need for alternative therapies. Vitamin D, known for its role in muscle function and its presence in the receptors of the bladder and prostate, has been proposed as a potential non-invasive intervention. This study aimed to evaluate the effectiveness of vitamin D supplementation in the management of UI and OAB. METHODS: a systemati

[Characteristics of the neural regulation of the lower urinary tract as a cause of the development of an overactive bladder: current state of the problem].

An overactive bladder (OAB) is a constellation of lower urinary tract symptoms, including urgency, increased frequency of urination during the day and/or night (nocturia), and, in some cases, urge incontinence. This syndrome can be caused by different conditions, and currently no universal pathogenetic treatment has been developed. In addition, there are virtually no Russian-language publications providing information on the neurophysiology and neuroanatomy of the lower urinary tract. At the same time, the importance of this topic can hardly be overestimated. Often, a patient with a neurogenic

Propiverine: a review of its use in the treatment of adults and children with overactive bladder associated with idiopathic or neurogenic detrusor overactivity, and in men with lower urinary tract symptoms.

Propiverine is a well established antimuscarinic agent with a mixed mode of action in the treatment of symptoms associated with overactive bladder (OAB). As well as blocking muscarinic receptors in the detrusor muscle, the drug also inhibits cellular calcium influx, thereby diminishing muscle spasm. In patients with symptoms of OAB resulting from idiopathic detrusor overactivity (IDO) or neurogenic detrusor overactivity (NDO), propiverine demonstrated dose-dependent efficacy and tolerability, with adverse events consistent with those associated with all antimuscarinic agents. In adults with ID

Urinary urgency acts as a source of divided attention leading to changes in gait in older adults with overactive bladder.

AIMS: There is a well-recognised but unexplained association between lower urinary tract symptoms including urgency and urgency incontinence and falls in older people. It has been hypothesised that urinary urgency acts as a source of divided attention, leading to gait changes which increase falls risk. This study aimed to assess whether urinary urgency acts as a source of divided attention in older adults with overactive bladder (OAB). METHODS: 27 community-dwelling adults aged 65 years and over with a clinical diagnosis of OAB underwent 3-Dimensional Instrumented Gait Analysis under three co

The effect of intravesical ketoprofen on acetylcholine-evoked urinary bladder contractility and detrusor overactivity in the anesthetized rabbit model.

Intraurethral procedures such as the transurethral resection of the prostate can generate detrusor overactivity and bladder irritability. The rabbit model of detrusor overactivity has proven to be an excellent model to study the effects of drugs on detrusor overactivity. Using this model, we evaluated the responses to intravesical ketoprofen. In this model, each rabbit is anesthetized and the right external carotid artery is cannulated for blood pressure monitoring. A catheter is inserted through the femoral artery and is used for administration of acetylcholine (Ach). The bladder is exposed a

Elevated urinary succinate in women with symptom-defined overactive bladder without clinically recognized cardiometabolic disease: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Overactive bladder (OAB) is a symptom-defined syndrome, and its metabolic correlates remain incompletely understood. This study investigated whether urinary tricarboxylic acid cycle metabolites differ between women with symptom-defined probable OAB and controls without clinically recognized cardiometabolic disease. METHODS: In this cross-sectional clinic-based study, women aged 18 years and older attending a gynecology outpatient clinic were enrolled. Participants with self-reported cardiometabolic disease or related medication use were excluded. Probable OAB was defined by an Ove
