From 1968 to 1977, 21 patients were observed who had fistulas between the bowel and the urinary tract. Except in five patients, fistulas were located vesicointestinally. The main etiologic factors were inflammatory lesions of the bowel, especially diverticulitis and appendicitis. All patients had symptoms relating to the urinary tract, mainly recurrent urinary infection with dysuria. On the average, nine months passed until the fistula was diagnosed. Urethrocystoscopy proved to be the most valuable aid in diagnosing intestinovesical fistulas, the fistulous opening was thus seen in 11 patients.

INTRODUCTION: Patients with lower urinary tract anomalies or neurogenic disorders often suffer from voiding difficulties. Clean intermittent catheterization (CIC) is effective for bladder drainage; however, this is often painful. Transurethral catheterization is also impossible in patients with urethral stricture. A Mitrofanoff conduit may solve some of these problems, but a few disadvantages have been reported, including: difficult surgical techniques and frequent operative complications. A vesicostomy is easy to perform but persistent urine leak over the abdomen and diaper rash can be annoyi

INTRODUCTION AND HYPOTHESIS: The aim of this paper is to review proposed classifications for genito-urinary fistulae.
METHODS: A comprehensive literature review of historical texts, peer review publications, and abstracts was used to compile a listing of the existing genito-urinary fistula classification systems.
RESULTS: The absence of an accepted standardized classification for female genito-urinary fistulae has resulted in the proliferation of a number of individually devised categorizations. Fistulae are described by size, location, degree of vaginal scarring, and type (whether it involv

Percutaneous nephrostomy (PCN) was used to treat 16 ureteral fistulas, two ileal fistulas following ileo-cystoplasty, and one pelvic fistula. Discharge resolved in all cases. PCN alone achieved complete recovery of the ileal and pelvic fistulas. Insertion of a wire-guide through the fistula into the bladder and stenting of the ureter for 5 to 20 days with a 8 to 10 F multi-side-hole catheter was possible in 12 of the ureteral fistulas and ensured complete recovery in every case. Because of complete stenosis, this procedure failed in the four other cases of ureteral fistula, and surgery was the

We report a case of urinary fistula after scrotal vasectomy for recurrent epididymo-orchitis. The etiology of this rare complication is discussed and the literature is reviewed.

On the basis of three cases, the authors study the problem of perineal urinary fistula secondary to rectal surgery. They first note that little attention has been devoted to these lesions. The clinical and radiological features are described and analysed, in a pathological context. Treatment of these fistulae is difficult if a conservative approach is sought, and the best solution is perhaps nephrectomy or bypass by a Bricker operation carried out either initially or after an attempt at repair has failed.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVE: Fistulae are anomalous communications between two epithelial surfaces. Though with a rare incidence, they impose significant burdens on affected women. Fistulae were initially described in 200 A.D., but management has evolved surgically to include more minimally invasive approaches. Minimally invasive techniques have notably decreased morbidity rates for surgical approaches in the past decades. Robotic surgery was born from the desire to overcome laparoscopy limitations while retaining its advantages. When available, robotic surgery provides surgeons with enhanced dex

Urinary tract fistulas represent a complex group of pathologies that present significant management challenges. While most such fistulas ultimately require definitive surgical management, compromised local tissue quality or other factors often render straightforward simple one layered closure challenging with a substantial risk of failure. Interpositional tissue flaps have become a mainstay of treatment in these circumstances, enabling the delivery of healthy tissue from other locations to the site of pathology. Herein, we present an overview of the assessment and management of complex urinary

PURPOSE: We report our experience with the diagnosis and treatment of women with urinary fistula after mid urethral sling surgery.
MATERIALS AND METHODS: We retrospectively reviewed the records of patients with urinary fistula secondary to mid urethral sling surgery. Electronic medical records and billing records were searched. We analyzed sling type, presenting symptoms and interval from initial sling surgery to 1) symptom appearance, 2) fistula diagnosis and 3) fistula repair. Symptomatic outcomes were assessed by PGI-I. Surgical outcomes were based on history and examination.
RESULTS: We

We report a rare case of vesico-urethral foreign body with urinary fistula. On March 12, 2002, a 53-year-old single men inserted a 3 m vinyl tube 6 mm in diameter into his urethra by himself for the purpose of masturbation, but he could not remove the tube. He cut his urethra by himself and tried to remove the tube. The next day he was admitted to our hospital, with complaints of urinary fistula and fever. Open surgical removal of foreign body, cystostomy and repair of bulbous portion of the urethra were performed. At 24 days postoperatively the cystostomy and urethral catheter were removed an

Thirty-eight out of 44 patients with unrepairable urinary and rectal vaginal fistulae obtained good to excellent results from diverting the urine by uretero-colic anastomosis. The patients who hitherto were regarded as social outcasts became integrated into society once again. Intestinal conduits are generally not employed for urinary diversion, because of the social dislike for colostomies and ileostomies, coupled with the lack of availability of the necessary external appliances, in Nigeria. In spite of the good results recorded, it is felt that urinary diversion by uretero-colic anastomosis

Surgical correction is the treatment of choice for urinary fistulas. However, there are circumstances that advise against the use of this approach, basically when patient general condition is poor or life expectancy short; i. e., in the presence of an underlying malignant pelvic disease. In these cases, urinary diversion by percutaneous nephrostomy will suffice, although sepsis or derangement of electrolyte balance may sometimes develop due to the fistulous defect. Occlusion of the pyelo-ureteric junction and percutaneous drainage is a solution that causes no major complications. Two patients

Women with large urinary tract fistulas in the presence of advanced incurable gynecologic cancer are a difficult problem. In the past, treatment has usually been either inadequate or highly morbid. We have palliated three women with large incurable urinary tract fistulas by occluding the distal ureters with isobutyl-2-cyanoacrylate (Bucrylate) and implanting permanent bilateral percutaneous nephrostomies. This technique is easily performed and effective, and has few complications.

The 51chromium test is an inexpensive, noninvasive test to evaluate patients for enteric-urinary fistulas. Of 11 patients studied the 51chromium test demonstrated correctly a fistula in 5 of 6 patients with fistulas and showed no lesion in all 5 without fistulas. Excretory urography, barium enemas, visible contrast medium, cystograms and upper gastrointestinal series failed to demonstrate the fistulas with similar accuracy. Cystoscopy suggested a possible lesion in 4 patients but was definite for a fistula in only 2 of those patients.

Ten boys with a fistula between the rectum and the urinary tract are presented. Six resulted from complications of imperforate anus surgery, three were various congenital abnormalities, and one was associated with an inflammatory pelvic mass. The management of these patients is described and the problems are discussed.
