Tubulopapillary mammary carcinoma in a brown bear (Ursus arctos).

A 28-yr-old, nulliparous female brown bear (Ursus arctos) at the Karacabey Ovakurusu Bear Sanctuary presented with an enlargement of the mammary gland. Three other nodules were also noted in the proximity of the mammary gland and over the vulva. Clinical, hematologic, ultrasonographic, and radiologic examinations were performed; the enlarged mammary gland was removed and the other masses were also excised. Histopathologic examination revealed tubulopapillary carcinoma of the mammary gland, and the other masses were diagnosed as epidermoid cysts. This is the first reported case of tubulopapilla

Mortality analysis of Pleistocene bears and its paleoanthropological relevance.

Bear bones and Paleolithic stone artefacts often co-occur in Pleistocene cave deposits of Eurasia, raising the question of how these associations come about and the need for effective methods with which to obtain a clear answer. Building upon knowledge of modern bears, I present a method for testing two competing hypotheses about the causes of bear mortality in hibernation contexts. The first hypothesis proposes that age-dependent deaths resulted from non-violent causes (principally starvation), implying that bears' presence in a cave was not linked in time to human activities there. The secon

Prevalence of Trichinella spiralis in black bears (Ursus americanus) from Newfoundland and Labrador, Canada.

Tongue and diaphragm samples from 158 black bears (Ursus americanus) from Newfoundland and Labrador were examined for Trichinella spiralis. No larvae were detected in samples from the island of Newfoundland but one animal from the Labrador samples was infected. The results of this and other studies suggest a lack of involvement of the black bear in a sylvatic cycle of T. spiralis in eastern Canada.

Seasonal changes in the prevalence of ova of Diphyllobothrium ursi and Baylisascaris transfuga in the feces of the black bear (Ursus americanus).

An analysis of 114 samples of feces from black bears (Ursus americanus) from La Verendrye Park, Quebec revealed that the prevalence of eggs of Diphyllobothrium ursi and Baylisascaris transfuga varied seasonally. D. ursi ova were most prevalent during the summer and fall and at their lowest in spring while the converse was true for B. transfuga. This phenomenon possibly is associated with the cessation of feeding during the winter denning of black bears.

Serological response to extralabel use of parenteral rabies vaccines in 28 mammalian species.

OBJECTIVE: To evaluate immunogenicity, persistence of antibodies, survival after challenge, and anamnestic response following extralabel parenteral rabies vaccination across mammalian species compared with benchmarks from on-label canine vaccination. METHODS: Mammals described in published studies of extralabel parenteral rabies vaccination. A structured literature review (1980 to 2025) identified studies reporting serologic or challenge outcomes after extralabel parenteral rabies vaccination. Extracted data included taxonomic family; vaccine type and schedule, timing of serum collection, ant

A Tissue Digestion Protocol for Measuring Sarcoptes scabiei (Astigmata: Sarcoptidae) Density in Skin Biopsies.

Sarcoptic mange is a parasitic skin disease caused by the burrowing mite Sarcoptes scabiei that affects a diversity of mammals, including humans, worldwide. In North America, the most commonly affected wildlife includes wild canids, such as coyotes and red foxes, and more recently American black bears in the Mid-Atlantic and Northeast United States. Currently, surveillance for sarcoptic mange in wildlife is syndromic, relying on detection of clinical signs and lesions, such as alopecia and crusting of skin. When possible, skin scrapes are used to identify the causative mite. While skin scrapes

Description and molecular characterisation of Babesia ailuropodae n. sp., a new piroplasmid species infecting giant pandas.

BACKGROUND: Babesia spp. are protozoan parasites that infect the red blood cells of domesticated animals, wildlife and humans. A few cases of giant pandas (a flagship species in terms of wildlife conservation) infected with a putative novel Babesia sp. have been reported. However, comprehensive research on the morphological and molecular taxonomic classification of this novel Babesia sp. is still lacking. This study was designed to close this gap and formally describe this new Babesia sp. infecting giant pandas. METHODS: Detailed morphological, molecular and phylogenetic analyses were conduct

Postcranial morphology and the locomotor habits of living and extinct carnivorans.

Members of the order Carnivora display a broad range of locomotor habits, including cursorial, scansorial, arboreal, semiaquatic, aquatic, and semifossorial species from multiple families. Ecomorphological analyses from osteological measurements have been used successfully in prior studies of carnivorans and rodents to accurately infer the locomotor habits of extinct species. This study uses 20 postcranial measurements that have been shown to be effective indicators of locomotor habits in rodents and incorporates an extensive sample of over 300 individuals from more than 100 living carnivoran

Dynamic changes and functional analysis of the vaginal microbial communities in reproductively dysfunctional giant pandas.

Maintaining reproductive health in female giant pandas is vital for sustaining population growth. In clinical practice, we have observed reproductive dysfunction (defined as repeated mating failure accompanied by reproductive cycle irregularities) in some individuals. This study investigated the association between reproductive dysfunction and the vaginal microbiota in 15 captive pandas, using 16S rDNA sequencing and biochemical analyses. Reproductively dysfunctional pandas (n = 6) exhibited reduced serum albumin, elevated creatine kinase, increased white blood cell count and mean corpuscular

First report of Taenia arctos (Cestoda: Taeniidae) from brown bears (Ursus arctos) in Romania.

BACKGROUND: The brown bear (Ursus arctos) is an apex predator with significant ecological importance and serves as a valuable indicator species for monitoring parasitic burdens in forest ecosystems. Owing to its complex ecology and varied diet, this species may play a key role in the life cycle of numerous pathogens, including cestodes of the genus Taenia, such as the recently described Taenia arctos. Among the potential intermediate hosts for T. arctos is the moose (Alces alces), a species sporadically present in northern Romania, where its habitat may overlap with that of U. arctos. In this

Thelazia callipaeda in free-ranging brown bears (Ursus arctos) from Romania.

Thelazia callipaeda is a zoonotic spirurid nematode infecting the conjunctival sac of various mammalian hosts, including carnivores and humans. Although initially restricted to Asia, the parasite has expanded across Europe over the past two decades, with reports of infection in domestic and wild hosts as well as humans. In Romania, T. callipaeda has been documented in several wild carnivore species and lagomorphs, but not yet in brown bears (Ursus arctos), despite housing the largest European bear population. Between 2021 and 2025, the eyes of 25 brown bears legally hunted in different regions

Endogenous lipid pneumonia in a brown bear (Ursus arctos).

A free-living yearling male brown bear (Ursus arctos) was observed in the wild, exhibiting marked ataxia, and died shortly after undergoing a standard immobilization procedure. The brown bear is a strictly protected species in many countries, including Poland, under both national and international legislation, as well as several conservation agreements. Autopsy revealed marked gross changes in the lungs. Histopathological examination showed multifocal infiltration of foamy macrophages within the alveolar and bronchiolar lumen. The presence of Sudanophilic vacuoles within macrophages supported

Andean bears (Tremarctos ornatus) display selective behaviors while foraging bromeliads (Puya spp.) in high elevation puna grasslands.

Andean bears (Tremarctos ornatus) forage extensively on bromeliads (Puya spp.) across their range, although their selectivity for bromeliads is less understood. We report on foraging activity by Andean bears on two species of bromeliad, Puya leptostachya and Puya membranacea, in high elevation puna grasslands (3499-3806 m.a.s.l) within and near Manu National Park (MNP) in SE Peru. We established two ridgeline transects (inside and outside MNP) with perpendicular transects running downslope. We recorded whether bromeliad plants were foraged by Andean bears on four separate sampling occasions th

Placoderms.

For over 70 million years, during the Paleozoic, the placoderms (Greek for 'plated skin'), an extinct group of armoured fishes, were the most abundant and diverse vertebrates on our planet. Some of the first placoderm fossils discovered - such as Bothriolepis with its bone-covered pectoral fins - seemed so bizarre that they were thought to represent turtles or ancient beetles. All placoderms bear thick overlapping dermal plates around the head (called the 'head shield') and an area of the body covered in similar overlapping plates enveloping the pectoral to anal region (called the 'trunk-shiel

Low-stress livestock handling protects cattle in a five-predator habitat.

Given the ecological importance of top predators, societies are turning to non-lethal methods for coexistence. Coexistence is challenging when livestock graze within wild predator habitats. We report a randomized, controlled experiment to evaluate low-stress livestock handling (L-SLH), a form of range riding, to deter grizzly (brown) bears, gray wolves, cougars, black bears, and coyotes in Southwestern Alberta. The treatment condition was supervision by two newly hired and trained range riders and an experienced L-SLH-practicing range rider. This treatment was compared against a baseline pseud

Epigenomic profiling indicates a role for DNA methylation in the postnatal liver and pancreas development of giant pandas.

Giant pandas are unique within Carnivora with a strict bamboo diet. Here, the epigenomic profiles of giant panda liver and pancreas tissues collected from three important feeding stages were investigated using BS-seq. Few differences in DNA methylation profiles were exhibited between no feeding and suckling groups in both tissues. However, we observed a tendency toward a global loss of DNA methylation in the gene-body and promoter region of metabolism-related genes from newborn to adult. Correlation analysis revealed a significant negative correlation between the changes in methylation levels

T-cell lymphoma in a Himalayan black bear in China.

A 12-y-old Himalayan black bear suddenly developed depression, anorexia, cough, and dyspnea and died at the Ordos Zoo, China. At autopsy, the mesenteric and cranial mediastinal lymph nodes (LNs) were enlarged; the largest cranial mediastinal LN was ~13 cm in diameter. Scattered-to-diffuse, rounded-or-oval, gray, firm 1-6-mm nodules were observed on the surfaces of the spleen, liver, lungs, and small intestine. Histologically, the enlarged cranial mediastinal and mesenteric LNs, spleen, small intestine, lungs, and liver contained dense populations of neoplastic lymphoid cells (NLCs). The NLCs w

Diversity and Composition of Gut Bacterial Community in Giant Panda with Anorexia.

The giant panda (GP) is the most precious animal in China. Gastrointestinal tract disease, especially associated with dysbiosis of gut microbiota, is the leading cause of death in GPs. Here, we performed 16S rRNA high-throughput sequencing to investigate the gut microbiota of GPs having symptoms of anorexia. Results showed that gut microbiota of GP with anorexia had lower richness (Chao1 index) than the healthy GP. However, no significant differences in alpha diversity were observed. There is a significance in the microbial structure between anorexia and healthy GPs. The abundance of phylum Fi
