Learning from label proportions in brain-computer interfaces: Online unsupervised learning with guarantees.

OBJECTIVE: Using traditional approaches, a brain-computer interface (BCI) requires the collection of calibration data for new subjects prior to online use. Calibration time can be reduced or eliminated e.g., by subject-to-subject transfer of a pre-trained classifier or unsupervised adaptive classification methods which learn from scratch and adapt over time. While such heuristics work well in practice, none of them can provide theoretical guarantees. Our objective is to modify an event-related potential (ERP) paradigm to work in unison with the machine learning decoder, and thus to achieve a r

[Brain-computer interfaces, Locked-In syndrome, and disorders of consciousness].

Detecting signs of consciousness in patients with severe brain injury constitutes a real challenge for clinicians. The current gold standard in clinical diagnosis is the behavioral scale relying on motor abilities, which are often impaired or nonexistent in these patients. In this context, brain-computer interfaces (BCIs) could offer a potential complementary tool to detect signs of consciousness whilst bypassing the usual motor pathway. In addition to complementing behavioral assessments and potentially reducing error rate, BCIs could also serve as a communication tool for paralyzed but consc

Performance and usability testing of an automated tool for detection of peripheral artery disease using electronic health records.

Peripheral artery disease (PAD) is a common cardiovascular disorder that is frequently underdiagnosed, which can lead to poorer outcomes due to lower rates of medical optimization. We aimed to develop an automated tool to identify undiagnosed PAD and evaluate physician acceptance of a dashboard representation of risk assessment. Data were derived from electronic health records (EHR). We developed and compared traditional risk score models to novel machine learning models. For usability testing, primary and specialty care physicians were recruited and interviewed until thematic saturation. Data

HoloBio: A holographic microscopy tool for quantitative biological analysis.

Holographic imaging in microscopy enables label-free quantitative information of biological specimens and has found applications across a wide range of biomedical studies, from cell morphology to particle dynamics; yet its widespread adoption is often limited by the lack of accessible and standardized analysis software. We present HoloBio, an open-source, Python-based graphical user interface developed to address this issue. This software offers two primary operational modes: a Real-Time mode that enables live processing of holograms at video frame rates, and an Offline mode designed for post-

Comparative Evaluation of Desktop, Room-Scale, and Large-Space Co-Located Collaborative Virtual Reality in Immersive Training.

Large-space co-located collaborative virtual reality provides a training environment in which participants can move, communicate, and coordinate actions within a shared immersive space. However, evidence remains limited on whether this configuration improves spatial presence, team coordination, and learning engagement beyond desktop-based collaboration or distributed room-scale virtual reality. This study evaluated a single-center, three-arm experimental protocol involving 126 participants assigned to 42 three-person teams. Teams were randomized to desktop collaborative simulation, room-scale

A Comprehensive Method to Evaluate the Usability of Virtual Reality Headset Devices for Industrial Applications.

The increasing adoption of virtual reality for industrial tasks such as virtual assembly, inspection, and operator training necessitates a standardized approach for evaluating and selecting appropriate hardware. This paper addresses this need by introducing a comprehensive methodology to assess the usability of commercially widespread virtual reality headsets specifically for industrial applications with hand-held controllers. We conducted a large-scale comparative study involving five leading headsets (HTC VIVE Pro 1 and 2, HTC VIVE XR Elite, Meta Quest Pro, and Meta Quest 3) and 60 demograph

SORI: A softness-rendering interface to unravel the nature of softness perception.

Tactile perception of softness serves a critical role in the survival, well-being, and social interaction among various species, including humans. This perception informs activities from food selection in animals to medical palpation for disease detection in humans. Despite its fundamental importance, a comprehensive understanding of how softness is neurologically and cognitively processed remains elusive. Previous research has demonstrated that the somatosensory system leverages both cutaneous and kinesthetic cues for the sensation of softness. Factors such as contact area, depth, and force p

A comparison of the psychological effects of robot motion in physical and virtual environments.

A mixed-methods approach was used to assess the fidelity of virtual environments as ergonomic assessment tools for human-robot interaction. Participants performed a visual search task in the physical environment while a nearby collaborative robot repeatedly extended its arm toward them. This scenario was reconstructed in two virtual environments with different levels of graphical detail. Measures of presence, task performance, workload, and anxiety were taken to determine the effect of robot motion in all three environments. Task performance decreased in response to robot motion in the physica

Quantifying Motor and Cognitive Function of the Upper Limb Using Mixed Reality Smartglasses.

In our aging world, the need to measure and evaluate motor and cognitive functions and to automate physical and occupational therapy will increase in the future. Many studies on VR-based rehabilitation systems are already underway. However, there are some issues such as the risk of falling or crashing due to the complete blockage of visual information, VR sickness, and lack of reality. The purpose of this research is to develop a system that simultaneously measures and evaluates multiple abilities and functions, such as motor function, cognitive function, and prediction ability, by using mixed

An Augmented Reality Based Human-Robot Interaction Interface Using Kalman Filter Sensor Fusion.

In this paper, the application of Augmented Reality (AR) for the control and adjustment of robots has been developed, with the aim of making interaction and adjustment of robots easier and more accurate from a remote location. A LeapMotion sensor based controller has been investigated to track the movement of the operator hands. The data from the controller allows gestures and the position of the hand palm's central point to be detected and tracked. A Kinect V2 camera is able to measure the corresponding motion velocities in x, y, z directions after our investigated post-processing algorithm i

Effect of viewing mode on pathfinding in immersive Virtual Reality.

The use of Head Mounted Displays (HMDs) to view Virtual Reality Environments (VREs) has received much attention recently. This paper reports on the difference between actual humans' navigation in a VRE viewed through an HMD compared to that in the same VRE viewed on a laptop PC display. A novel Virtual Reality (VR) Navigation input device (VRNChair), designed by our team, was paired with an Oculus Rift DK2 Head-Mounted Display (HMD). People used the VRNChair to navigate a VRE, and we analyzed their navigational trajectories with and without the HMD to investigate plausible differences in perfo

A cortical architecture on parallel hardware for motion processing in real time.

Walking through a crowd or driving on a busy street requires monitoring your own movement and that of others. The segmentation of these other, independently moving, objects is one of the most challenging tasks in vision as it requires fast and accurate computations for the disentangling of independent motion from egomotion, often in cluttered scenes. This is accomplished in our brain by the dorsal visual stream relying on heavy parallel-hierarchical processing across many areas. This study is the first to utilize the potential of such design in an artificial vision system. We emulate large par

Gaze angle: a possible mechanism of visual stress in virtual reality headsets.

It is known that some Virtual Reality (VR) head-mounted displays (HMDs) can cause temporary deficits in binocular vision. On the other hand, the precise mechanism by which visual stress occurs is unclear. This paper is concerned with a potential source of visual stress that has not been previously considered with regard to VR systems: inappropriate vertical gaze angle. As vertical gaze angle is raised or lowered the 'effort' required of the binocular system also changes. The extent to which changes in vertical gaze angle alter the demands placed upon the vergence eye movement system was explor

Chat Modeling: Interaction-Enhanced Agent Framework for Visualizing Literature-Grounded Biological Structures.

Bioscientists frequently seek to visualize the biological systems they have empirically characterized and reported in the literature. Realizing such visualizations requires biological structure modeling, an inherently complex process that demands both biological and geometric understanding. This paper addresses the problem of constructing such 3D models for visualization. In this paper, we introduce a novel agent framework that mitigates the challenges of operating 3D modeling software by transforming user inputs, including natural language descriptions, research publication content, and textu

SAMJ: fast image annotation on ImageJ/Fiji via segment anything model.

Accurate image annotation is essential for training artificial intelligence (AI) systems in biomedical image analysis, enabling tasks such as cell detection, tissue quantification, and disease characterization. However, creating pixel-level annotations is a time-consuming and labor-intensive process that requires expert input, limiting the development and adoption of AI methods. Recent advances in foundation models, such as the Segment Anything Model (SAM), enable interactive object segmentation from simple user prompts, but their integration into widely used bioimage analysis platforms remain
