Optical Coherence Tomography Angiography in Eyes with Non-infectious Posterior Uveitis; Some Practical Aspects.

Optical coherence tomography angiography (OCTA) is an innovative imaging technology enabling clinicians to learn more about the pathophysiology of disease processes as it facilitates visualization of the retinal and choroidal circulation without injection of a dye. Also it provides ample qualitative and quantitative data on the vascular supply. OCTA has become an important tool nowadays in the diagnosis and follow-up of patients with age-related macular degeneration, inherited chorioretinal diseases, diabetic retinopathy, retinal vascular occlusive diseases and optic nerve disorders. However,

Preliminary evaluation of YUTIQ™ (fluocinolone acetonide intravitreal implant 0.18 mg) in posterior uveitis.

Uveitis is a major cause of ocular morbidity, potentially leading to significant visual impairment. The recent adoption of alternative drug delivery options has led to the development of new sustained-delivery corticosteroid systems, able to manage successfully chronic noninfectious posterior uveitis. The treatment goal is to target the site of inflammation with low dose of corticosteroids, delivered over an extended period of time, to minimize the cumulative damage resulting from repeated recurrences, reducing both injections frequency and ocular side effects. This article will review the pha

Long-term Change of Subfoveal Choroidal Thickness in Behçet's Disease Patients with Posterior Uveitis.

PURPOSE: To evaluate long-term changes of subfoveal choroidal thickness (SCT) in Behçet's disease (BD) patients with posterior uveitis. METHODS: Changes in SCT measured with enhanced depth imaging optical coherence tomography during quiescent phase were assessed during >24 months in 63 BD patients and control group. RESULTS: Baseline characteristics showed no difference, but the BD group showed poorer visual acuity (p = 0.013) and smaller SCT (p = 0.006) at final examination. Mean SCT in the BD group decreased from 291.0 to 268.1 μm (p<0.001) during the mean period of 38.5 months. Mean chang

A triamcinolone acetonide palmitate nanoemulsion eye drop delivered by iontophoresis for the management of posterior uveitis.

Uveitis is a leading cause of global vision loss. Local corticosteroid therapy, notably intravitreal or suprachoroidal triamcinolone injections, remains central to its clinical management. However, frequent intraocular injections and poor patient compliance substantially increase the risk of complications such as endophthalmitis. Although eye drops represent a more attractive noninvasive alternative, their efficacy in treating posterior segment diseases is severely limited by ocular defense mechanisms, resulting in extremely low bioavailability (<5%). To address these challenges, we propose a

Mean platelet volume does not seem to relate to thrombosis or posterior uveitis in Behçet's disease.

Behçet's disease (BD) is a chronic inflammatory disorder in which thrombosis and posterior ocular involvement occur in about 30% of patients, whose ethiology is unknown. It has not been established whether mean platelet volume (MPV), a marker of platelet activation, is involved in the pathogenesis of thrombotic events and posterior uveitis in these patients. We aimed to analyze whether there are differences in MPV in BD patients when compared with controls and its relation with the presence of thrombosis and posterior uveitis. We determined MPV and platelet count, along with C-reactive protein

Posterior uveitis, paraneoplastic encephalomyelitis and auto-antibodies reacting with developmental protein of brain and retina.

We report a 68-year-old woman who presented with posterior uveitis, cerebellar ataxia, dysautonomia, peripheral neuropathy and undifferentiated carcinoma. Autopsy showed slight brain inflammatory changes and severe Purkinje cell degeneration. By immunocytochemistry, the serum and CSF contained antibodies that reacted with the cytoplasm of cells in the brain and retina of rat. Some neurons and glial cells were stained. However, the most labelled cells were immature cells of the subventricular layers of the dentate gyrus, olfactory bulb and lateral ventricles. In rat retina, the plexiform layers

Differential effect of Bordetella pertussis on experimental posterior uveitis in the black-hooded Lister rat.

The effect of an additional adjuvant, Bordetella pertussis, on the clinical and histopathologic features of experimental autoimmune uveitis in black-hooded Lister rats was investigated. Disease was induced by a single footpad injection of purified retinal S-antigen in Freund's complete adjuvant. In those animals that did not receive B Pertussis the clinical features were those of a retinal vasculitis with disc edema, periphlebitis, and deep retinal infiltrates. In contrast, animals that received B pertussis developed lesions in the pigment epithelium and choroid. Histopathologic studies disclo

PURPOSE: To review the multimodal imaging patterns of posterior syphilitic uveitis. METHODS: A systematic review. RESULTS: The percentage of syphilis has started to increase again: The World Health Organization has reported 12 million new cases of syphilis each year. In addition, syphilis was responsible for 0.3% of deaths globally in 2002. Eye manifestations happen prevalently in secondary and tertiary stages of syphilis, even though ocular involvement can occur in all stages. Syphilis has the nickname: "the great imitator" since it has no unique clinical presentation, even though posterior

Self-assembled rapamycin prodrug nanoparticles for posterior segment targeting and effective treatment of experimental uveitis.

The treatment of posterior uveitis remains challenging due to the need for long-term medication and the limited efficacy of current therapies. In this study, we developed an injectable rapamycin-based nanoparticle formulation designed to extend intraocular residence time and enhance retinal penetration, thereby improving therapeutic outcomes. The nanoparticles were formed via self-assembly of rapamycin conjugated with a hydrophobic alkyl chain, yielding uniformly spherical particles with an average diameter of approximately 90 nm. In vitro experiments confirmed that the formulation exhibited m
