Blood plasma samples from 60 neuroblastoma patients prior to, during, and following treatment were studied for their content of circulating DOPA using a radioenzymatic assay. Normal values were established from children who were tumor-free or had other nonneurogenic tumors. The highest plasma DOPA concentration in tumor-free or nonneuroblastoma controls was 5.3 ng/ml with a mean of 2.15 ng/ml. Most neuroblastoma patients (28/31) with active disease had DOPA values above this level. The assessment of catecholamines (NE, E), essential metabolites (VMA, HVA) and serotonergic metabolite 5HIIA in urine by HPLC with UV detection is of interest for clinical diagnosis concerning HTA, pheochromocytoma, neuroblastoma, carcinoid syndrome, hypotension, etc. In the same urine sample one can detect (following preliminary steps) by HPLC the above--mentioned biochemical parameters with good reproducibility and sensitivity.

The ultrasonographic (US) findings of 25 infant cases detected by the Japanese mass screening program for neuroblastoma (NB) were reviewed. The following results were obtained: An identification of the primary site was possible in 96% of the cases with abdominal US. An estimation of the tumor weight was possible based on the mass volume, which was calculated from US measurements. Neuroblastoma (NB) is uncommon in the adolescent age group. It is located at any site containing sympathetic neural tissue, with retroperitoneal and adrenal lesions being the most common. Cutaneous and subcutaneous metastases of NB in children are infrequent. Primary thyroid NB with regional lymph node and distant multiple subcutaneous metastases was diagnosed in an 11-year-old boy. The differential diagnosis was primitive neuroectodermal tumor. Our case demonstrates the unique presentation of NB in an adolescent.

BACKGROUND/PURPOSE: Neuroblastoma (NB) detected by mass screening (MS) usually shows favorable prognosis and sometimes regresses spontaneously. Therefore, the authors started an observation program for these patients to avoid overtreatment. Homovanillic acid (HVA) and vanillylmandelic acid (VMA), two end products of dopamine metabolism, were measured in 60 workers exposed to carbon disulfide (CS(2)) in a rayon factory and in 48 unexposed workers. Five children with subacute or acute onset of cerebellar ataxia and opsoclonus are described. Two had cerebrospinal fluid pleocytosis at the onset of ataxia and were initially thought to have acute parainfectious cerebellar ataxia of childhood.
