We perform a state-specific life-cycle assessment of greenhouse gases (GHG) (CO2eq) and sulfur dioxide (SO2) emissions in India for representative passenger vehicles (two-wheelers, three-wheelers, four-wheelers, and buses) and technologies (internal combustion engine, battery electric, hybrid electric, and plug-in hybrid electric vehicles). We find that in most states, four-wheeler battery-electric vehicles (BEVs) have higher GHG and SO2 emissions than other conventional or alternative vehicles. Electrification of those vehicle classes under present conditions would not lead to emission reduct

The influence of air-conditioning activity on the emissions and fuel consumption of passenger cars is an important issue, since fleet penetration and use of these systems have reached a high level. Apart from the MOBILE6 study in the United States, little data is available on the impact of air-conditioning devices (A/Cs). Since weather conditions and A/C technologies both differ from those in the U. S., a test series was designed for the European setting. A fleet of six modern gasoline passenger cars was tested in different weather conditions. Separate test series were carried out for the init

INTRODUCTION: Motor vehicle exhaust is an important source of air pollutants and greenhouse gases. Concerns over the health and climate effects of mobile-source emissions have prompted worldwide efforts to reduce vehicle emissions. Implementation of more stringent emission standards have driven advances in vehicle, engine, and exhaust after-treatment technologies as well as fuel formulations. On the other hand, vehicle numbers and travel distances have been increasing because of population and economic growth and changes in land use. These factors have resulted in changes to the amount and che

INTRODUCTION: In the United States, billions of dollars have been spent implementing interventions to reduce traffic-related air pollution (TRAP). These interventions are usually regulatory actions focused on reducing tailpipe emissions. However, they also include local programs to reduce traffic congestion and excess vehicle emissions, such as electronic tolls and roadway capacity improvements. Few health studies have empirically evaluated the direct impact of air pollution exposure reductions from these emission regulations and congestion reduction programs; no studies have examined infant h

Over time, international decision-making bodies have paid a special attention to the adoption of test driving cycles in the laboratory that reflect standard traffic conditions and regulations regarding the maximum limit of pollutant emissions from road vehicles to be homologated for their admittance to traffic. The proposed study examines the impact of road and traffic characteristics on pollutant emissions and fuel consumption of light vehicles in a real urban traffic cycle. The research was carried out following two scenarios, in two phases, each of them focusing on the analysis of greenhous

This study combined the real-time monitoring and investigation of traffic flows to comprehensively analyze the road traffic flow and vehicle structure in downtown Beijing. A dynamic emission inventory of motor vehicle air pollutants in downtown Beijing in 2021 was established, and the impact of these emissions on air quality was simulated and quantified, and different emission reduction control scenarios were proposed to evaluate their environmental improvement effects and explore measures to mitigate the impact of pollution emissions. The results show that the high traffic flow and the struct

An important component of air quality engineering is quantifying in-use, fleet-average emission factors, and the spatial patterns of vehicle emissions. We report here that an absolute principal component score (APCS) analysis of on-road mobile measurements is a straightforward, efficient method for identifying the major contributors of traffic-related pollutants, deriving fuel-based emission factors, and mapping spatial patterns. Specifically, we applied the APCS model to on-highway measurements of nitrogen oxides (NOX), carbon monoxide (CO), carbon dioxide (CO2), black carbon (BC), and partic

Alternative transportation fuels (ATFs) can reduce air pollution. However, the influence of conventional fuels-diesel and gasoline, and particularly ATFs on photochemical air pollution is not well-characterized, limiting assessments of ATFs and air quality. This is mainly due to frequent use of lumped chemical mechanisms by related atmospheric modeling. Here we hypothesized that applying a chemical mechanism that is specifically developed according to both emission fractions and photochemical ozone creation potential of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) is key to gaining reliable insights into

We estimate the damages and expected deaths in the United States due to excess emissions of NOx from 2009 to 2015 Volkswagen diesel vehicles. Using data on vehicle registrations and a model of pollution transport and valuation, we estimate excess damages of $430 million and 46 excess expected deaths. Accounting for uncertainty about emissions gives a range for damages from $350 million to $500 million, and a range for excess expected deaths from 40 to 52. Our estimates incorporate significant local heterogeneity: for example, Minneapolis has the highest damages despite having fewer noncomplian

Regenerating exhaust after-treatment systems are increasingly employed in passenger cars in order to comply with regulatory emission standards. These systems include pollutant storage units that occasionally have to be regenerated. The regeneration strategy applied, the resultant emission levels and their share of the emission level during normal operation mode are key issues in determining realistic overall emission factors for these cars. In order to investigate these topics, test series with four cars featuring different types of such after-treatment systems were carried out. The emission p

With the advent of hybrid electric vehicles, computer-based vehicle simulation becomes more useful to the engineer and designer trying to optimize the complex combination of control strategy, power plant, drive train, vehicle, and driving conditions. With the desire to incorporate emissions as a design criterion, researchers at West Virginia University have developed artificial neural network (ANN) models for predicting emissions from heavy-duty vehicles. The ANN models were trained on engine and exhaust emissions data collected from transient dynamometer tests of heavy-duty diesel engines the

The impact of the sulfur (S) content in lubricating oil was evaluated for four ultra-low-emission vehicles and two super-ultra-low-emission vehicles, all with low mileage. The S content in the lube oils ranged from 0.01 to 0.76%, while the S content of the gasoline was fixed at 0.2 ppmw. Vehicles were configured with aged catalysts and tested over the Federal Test Procedure, at idle and at 50-mph cruise conditions. In all testing modes, variations in the S level of the lubricant did not significantly affect the regulated gas-phase tailpipe emissions. In addition to the regulated gas-phase emis

Evaporative emissions from gasoline vehicles of semivolatile and intermediate-volatility organic compounds (S/IVOCs) are a significant yet underestimated source of secondary organic aerosol (SOA). Current models often neglect this contribution due to a lack of molecular-level data. Here, we employ comprehensive two-dimensional gas chromatography (GC × GC-TOFMS) to characterize S/IVOCs from all major evaporative processes: diurnal breathing loss, hot soak, running loss, and refueling. Our results reveal that S/IVOCs, particularly IVOCs, accounted for 16.8-58.3% of total emissions and dominate t

On-Board Diagnostic (OBD) systems enable real-time monitoring of NOx emissions from heavy-duty diesel vehicles (HDDVs). However, few studies have focused on the root cause analysis of these emissions using OBD data. To address this gap, this study proposes an integrated analysis framework for HDDV NOx emissions that combines data processing, high-emission vehicle identification, and emission cause analysis. The framework employs a fuel-based window method to identify high-emission vehicles, while binning and machine learning techniques trace the causes of NOx emissions. A case study is conduct

The estimation of CO2 emission factors (EFs) is a key step in calculating automobile CO2 emissions. However, city-level research on the integrated estimation of vehicle CO2 EFs under real conditions is insufficient. To enrich the research methods of city-level vehicle CO2 EFs, this paper constructs a vehicle-road-driver three-layer regression model and estimates vehicle CO2 EFs empirical parameters for Tianjin. The results show that the influences of vehicle CO2 EFs can be ranked as follows: engine displacement level (0.740) > total mileage (0.336) > driving habit after the start (-0.072) > ve

High-rise buildings form deep urban street canyons and restrict the dispersion of vehicle emissions, posing severe health risks to the public by aggravating roadside air quality. Field measurements are important for understanding the dispersion process of tailpipe emissions in street canyons, while a major challenge is the lack of a suitable tracer gas. Carbon dioxide (CO2), which is safe to the public and inexpensive to obtain, can be reliably measured by existing gas analysers. This study investigated the suitability of using CO2 as a tracer gas for characterising vehicle emission dispersion

The emission of heavy-duty vehicles has raised great concerns worldwide. The complex working and loading conditions, which may differ a lot from PEMS tests, raised new challenges to the supervision and control of emissions, especially during real-world applications. On-board diagnostics (OBD) technology with data exchange enabled and strengthened the monitoring of emissions from a large number of heavy-duty diesel vehicles. This paper presents an analysis of the OBD data collected from more than 800 city and highway heavy-duty vehicles in China using remote OBD data terminals. Real-world NOx a

Road transport is the main anthropogenic source of NOx in Europe, affecting human health and ecosystems. Thus, mitigation policies have been implemented to reduce on-road vehicle emissions, particularly through the Euro standard limits. To evaluate the effectiveness of these policies, we calculated NO2 and NOx concentration trends using air quality and meteorological measurements conducted in three European cities over 26 years. These data were also employed to estimate the trends in NOx emission factors (EFNOx, based on inverse dispersion modeling) and NO2:NOx emission ratios for the vehicle

UNLABELLED: Remote sensing devices have been used for decades to measure gaseous emissions from individual vehicles at the roadside. Systems have also been developed that entrain diluted exhaust and can also measure particulate matter (PM) emissions. In 2015, the California Air Resources Board (CARB) reported that 8% of in-field diesel particulate filters (DPF) on heavy-duty (HD) vehicles were malfunctioning and emitted about 70% of total diesel PM emissions from the DPF-equipped fleet. A new high-emitter problem in the heavy-duty vehicle fleet had emerged. Roadside exhaust plume measurements
