Gut Microbiota Richness and Composition and Dietary Intake of Overweight Pregnant Women Are Related to Serum Zonulin Concentration, a Marker for Intestinal Permeability.

BACKGROUND: Increased intestinal permeability may precede adverse metabolic conditions. The extent to which the composition of the gut microbiota and diet contribute to intestinal permeability during pregnancy is unknown. OBJECTIVE: The aim was to investigate whether the gut microbiota and diet differ according to serum zonulin concentration, a marker of intestinal permeability, in overweight pregnant women. METHODS: This cross-sectional study included 100 overweight women [mean age: 29 y; median body mass index (in kg/m(2)): 30] in early pregnancy (<17 wk of gestation; median: 13 wk). Serum

Defining the healthy "core microbiome" of oral microbial communities.

BACKGROUND: Most studies examining the commensal human oral microbiome are focused on disease or are limited in methodology. In order to diagnose and treat diseases at an early and reversible stage an in-depth definition of health is indispensible. The aim of this study therefore was to define the healthy oral microbiome using recent advances in sequencing technology (454 pyrosequencing). RESULTS: We sampled and sequenced microbiomes from several intraoral niches (dental surfaces, cheek, hard palate, tongue and saliva) in three healthy individuals. Within an individual oral cavity, we found o

The Salivary Microbiota, Cytokines, and Metabolome in Patients with Ankylosing Spondylitis Are Altered and More Proinflammatory than Those in Healthy Controls.

The pathogenesis of ankylosing spondylitis (AS) remains unclear but appears to be associated with heredity and the environment. The mouth links the external environment to the gut and lungs. In the present study, compared to that observed in healthy controls (HCs), AS saliva was depleted of Bacilli such as Streptococcus, enriched with Clostridia such as Veillonellaceae, and enriched with opportunistic pathogens from Proteobacteria such as Brucella spp. and Campylobacter concisus. AS saliva was enriched with 16 cytokines related to inflammation, such as soluble IL-6 receptor α (sIL-6Rα), interl

Progression of diabetes is associated with changes in the ileal transcriptome and ileal-colon morphology in the UC Davis Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus rat.

Deterioration in glucose homeostasis has been associated with intestinal dysbiosis, but it is not known how metabolic dysregulation alters the gastrointestinal environment. We investigated how the progression of diabetes alters ileal and colonic epithelial mucosal structure, microbial abundance, and transcript expression in the University of California Davis Type 2 Diabetes Mellitus (UCD-T2DM) rat model. Male UCD-T2DM rats (age ~170 days) were included if <1-month (n = 6, D1M) or 3-month (n = 6, D3M) post-onset of diabetes. Younger nondiabetic UCD-T2DM rats were included as a nondiabetic compa

Dietary Qi-Weng-Huangbo powder enhances growth performance, diarrhoea and immune function of weaned piglets by modulating gut health and microbial profiles.

INTRODUCTION: The evolution of nutritional strategies to improve the gut health and microbiota profiles of early-weaned piglets is essential to reduce diarrhoea caused by weaning stress. Therefore, the aim of this study was to determine the effects of dietary supplementation of Qi-Weng-Huangbo powder, a traditional herbal medicine consisting of a mixture of Pulsatilla chinensis, Chinese Schneid and Astragalus extracts (PCE), on the growth performance, diarrhoea rate, immune function and intestinal health of weaned piglets. METHODS: 162 piglets were randomly assigned to the CON group (no PCE a

Multi-Omics Insights into the Relationship Between Intestinal Microbiota and Abdominal Fat Deposition in Meat Ducks.

Abdominal fat deposition is an important economic trait in poultry, as excessive accumulation reduces feed efficiency and carcass yield. The gut microbiota is known to influence host energy metabolism and fat storage, suggesting its potential involvement in fat deposition. This study examined the relationship between intestinal microbiota and abdominal fat deposition in an F2 population derived from Cherry Valley Ducks (♂) × Runzhou Crested White Ducks (♀) at 42 days of age. Based on abdominal fat rate, ducks with values of 0-0.75% and 1.5-2.25% were defined as the low (LF) and high (HF) abdom

Alterations of the Viable Ileal Microbiota of the Gut Mucosa-Lymph Node Axis in Pigs Fed Phytase and Lactic Acid-Treated Cereals.

The gut-lymph node axis is a critical player in the symbiotic relationship between gut microbiota and the host. However, little is known about the impact of diet-related bacterial shifts in the gut lumen on bacterial translocation into lymph nodes. Here, we (i) characterized changes in the viable microbiota composition along the ileal digesta-mucosa-lymph node axis and (ii) examined the effect of dietary phytase supplementation and lactic acid (LA) soaking of cereals on the bacterial taxonomy along this axis, together with their effect on the mucosal expression of innate immune and barrier fun

Dietary supplementation of Bacillus subtilis or antibiotics modified intestinal microbiome of weaned pigs under enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli infection.

Our previous research reported that supplementation of Bacillus subtilis DSM 25841 promoted growth and disease resistance of weaned pigs under enterotoxigenic Escherichia coli (ETEC) challenge and its efficacy is comparable to carbadox. This follow-up study aimed to characterize the effects of ETEC infection, supplementing B. subtilis DSM 25841 or carbadox on intestinal microbiota of pigs. Forty-eight weaned pigs (6.17 ± 0.36 kg BW) were randomly allotted to one of four treatments: negative control (NC), positive control (PC), antibiotics (AGP, 50 mg/kg of carbadox), and direct fed microbials

Vaginal host immune-microbiome interactions in a cohort of primarily African-American women who ultimately underwent spontaneous preterm birth or delivered at term.

BACKGROUND: Recent studies suggest that alterations in the vaginal microbiome allow for the assessment of the risk for spontaneous preterm birth (PTB), the leading cause of neonatal morbidity and mortality worldwide. However, the associations between the local immune response and the vaginal microbiome are still poorly understood. Herein, we characterize the vaginal host immune-microbiome interactions in women who ultimately underwent PTB and in those who delivered at term. METHODS: Vaginal fluid samples from 52 pregnant women (of whom 18 underwent PTB and 34 delivered at term) were collected

Role of Gut Dysbiosis in Liver Diseases: What Have We Learned So Far?

Accumulating evidence supports that gut dysbiosis may relate to various liver diseases. Alcoholics with high intestinal permeability had a decrease in the abundance of Ruminnococcus. Intestinal dysmotility, increased gastric pH, and altered immune responses in addition to environmental and genetic factors are likely to cause alcohol-associated gut microbial changes. Alcohol-induced dysbiosis may be associated with gut barrier dysfunction, as microbiota and their products modulate barrier function by affecting epithelial pro-inflammatory responses and mucosal repair functions. High levels of pl

Salmonella enterica Serovar Typhimurium Temporally Modulates the Enteric Microbiota and Host Responses To Overcome Colonization Resistance in Swine.

Salmonella enterica serovar Typhimurium is a prevalent incitant of enteritis in human beings and nonhuman animals. It has been proposed that host defense responses incited by Salmonella allow the bacterium to overcome colonization resistance. Piglets (n = 24) were orally inoculated with S. enterica serovar Typhimurium DT104 or buffer alone, and the host and microbial responses were temporally examined at the acute (2 days postinoculation [dpi]), subacute (6 dpi), and recovery (10 dpi) stages of salmonellosis. At the acute stage of disease, body temperatures were elevated, and feed consumption

Gut bacterial characteristics in children with autism spectrum disorder according to symptom severity: a cross-sectional study.

BACKGROUND: Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is associated with alterations in gut microbiota. The gut-brain axis, which involves bidirectional communication between the gastrointestinal tract and the central nervous system, has been implicated in the pathophysiology of ASD. This study aimed to investigate the relationship between gut microbiota characteristics and symptom severity in children with ASD. METHODS: This cross-sectional study enrolled a total of 81 children with ASD aged 3-12 years, who were divided into mild-to-moderate (n = 35) and severe (n = 46) groups based on Childhood Autism

Host-specific microbiome-rumination interactions shape methane-yield phenotypes in dairy cattle.

UNLABELLED: Enteric methane emissions (EMEs) negatively impact both the environment and livestock efficiency. Given the proposed link between CH4 yield and the rumination time (RT) phenotype, we hypothesize that this connection is mediated by the gut microbiome. This study investigated the RT-microbiome-EME connection using rumination-bolus, fecal, and rumen microbiomes as non-invasive proxies for identifying low-EME cows. High-RT cows ruminated 94 minutes longer per day (20%) and exhibited 26% lower EME than low-RT cows, confirming a strong RT-CH4-yield association. Microbial analysis reveale
