BACKGROUND: Standard, 5-7-Fr diameter pacing leads (PLs) can adversely affect atrioventricular valve (AVV) and venous (superior vena cava [SVC], innominate [INN]) integrities. Although chronic pacing/sensing performances have been reported on the steroid-eluting, lumenless, 4.1-Fr PL (Model 3830, Medtronic Inc., Minneapolis, MN, USA), comparative valve and venous effects are largely unknown.
METHODS: Patients (n = 134) were divided into two PL groups: Group 1 (n = 65, Model 3830) and Group 2 (n = 69, various 5-7 Fr models) and followed up to 9 years postimplant. Patient demographics, clinical

The Authors report a case of tricuspid atresia and total anomalous pulmonary venous return of the supracardiac type, with mild pulmonary valve stenosis and extracardiac malformations as anal atresia, microphthalmia and irideo and chorioretinic coloboma. The Authors stress the importance of the electrocardiogram and standard chest X-Ray to "suspect" this rare association.

BACKGROUND: Persistent right venous valve (PRVV), a remnant of the fetal right valve of the sinus venosus, may facilitate right-to-left atrial shunting through the patent foramen ovale (PFO). Although PRVV has been reported to cause severe neonatal cyanosis requiring surgical intervention, its clinical significance in otherwise healthy term neonates remains poorly defined.
METHODS: We retrospectively analyzed consecutive term neonates (≥ 37 weeks' gestation) with stable general conditions who exhibited periodic breathing-like oxygen saturation (SpO2) fluctuations and were found to have PRVV-a

BACKGROUND: Subclavian venous valve stenosis is a rare but significant cause of upper extremity venous hypertension in hemodialysis patients. When standard endovascular treatments are not feasible, alternative techniques may be required.
CASE PRESENTATION: A man in his 60s with end-stage renal disease on maintenance hemodialysis for 19 years, with a right forearm prosthetic arteriovenous graft (AVG), presented with right upper extremity edema and dialysis dysfunction due to subclavian vein occlusion. Intravascular ultrasound (IVUS) revealed fibrotic valve leaflets at the occlusion site. An 8

INTRODUCTION: Venous valve-related stenosis (VVRS) is an uncommon type of failure of arteriovenous fistula among patients with end-stage renal disease (ESRD). There is a paucity of data on the long-term efficacy of ultrasound-guided percutaneous transluminal angioplasty (PTA) for VVRS.
METHODS: ESRD patients who underwent PTA because of VVRS between January 2017 and December 2021 at the First Affiliated Hospital of Chongqing Medical University were enrolled. Patients were classified into three cohorts (cohort1, VVRS located within 3 cm of the vein adjacent to the anastomosis; cohort2, VVRS lo

BACKGROUND: Neonatal cyanosis is a clinical manifestation of hypoxemia and is usually pathological. Persistent right venous valve (PRVV) is a rare cause of cyanosis in newborns and can cause prenatal abnormalities, the clinical significance of which varies depending on the severity of the abnormality. There have been few reports on the intrauterine detection of these abnormalities and their follow-up during infancy. Here, we report a case of PRVV causing supravalvular tricuspid valve (TV) obstruction and secondary right ventricle (RV) hypoplasia. This case is unique in terms of its early prena

INTRODUCTION: Femoral venous cannulation is widely used to establish cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) during minimally invasive cardiac surgery (MICS). Although transesophageal echocardiography (TEE) is commonly used to guide cannula placement, cannula malposition can still occur, and preserved venous drainage may delay the recognition of cardiac injury. We report a rare case of right ventricular perforation caused by femoral venous cannulation during minimally invasive aortic valve replacement (AVR), emphasizing that adequate venous drainage does not exclude cannula malposition or cardiac perfora

COVID-19 acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) can be associated with extensive lung damage, pneumothorax, pneumomediastinum and, in severe cases, persistent air leaks (PALs) via bronchopleural fistulae (BPF). PALs can impede weaning from invasive ventilation or extracorporeal membrane oxygenation (ECMO). We present a series of patients requiring veno-venous ECMO for COVID-19 ARDS who underwent endobronchial valve (EBV) management of PAL. This is a single-centre retrospective observational study. Data were collated from electronic health records. Patients treated with EBV met the followin

Chronic deep venous insufficiency (CVI) of the lower extremities results from structural or functional abnormalities of the venous valves, leading to blood reflux and increased venous pressure. Common clinical manifestations include edema, varicose veins, skin hyperpigmentation, and ulcers. The primary etiologies of CVI include congenital valve defects and secondary damage from venous thrombosis, both of which significantly impair quality of life. Surgical treatments for CVI include valve repair, valve transposition, and valve transplantation. Valve repair is effective when the valve structure

BACKGROUND: Patients with chronic venous insufficiency secondary to infra-inguinal deep vein reflux have few treatment options available to them, given the focus-to-date has been directed toward obstruction rather than reflux. The SAVVE trial was a prospective, non-blinded, single arm, multicenter study designed to assess the safety and efficacy of VenoValve, a bioprosthetic replacement venous valve that is surgically implanted into the deep venous system for treatment of patients with severe infra-inguinal deep venous reflux (Clinical, Etiological, Anatomical, and Pathophysiological classific

AIM: This study evaluated risk factors for dysfunction and failure of the bovine Contegra valved conduit for right ventricle outflow tract reconstruction.
METHODS: A total of 156 bovine jugular vein conduits were reviewed. Early and late mortality were evaluated. Seriate echocardiography was performed through the follow-up (mean 58±43.2 months, range 12 to 108 months), and risk factors and adverse events evaluation were analyzed by multivariate logistic regression.
RESULTS: Hospital mortality was 7% (11/156). The only independent predictor of early mortality were cardiopulmonary bypass time

BACKGROUND: Normal embryonic development and survival in utero is dependent on an adequate supply of vitamin A. Embryos from vitamin A-deficient (VAD) pregnant rats fed an inadequate amount of all-trans retinoic acid (atRA; 12 microg per g of diet or approximately 230 microg per rat per day) exhibit severe developmental abnormalities of the anterior cardinal vein and hindbrain by embryonic day (E) 12.5 and die shortly thereafter.
METHODS: In the present study, we sought to determine whether supplementation of VAD-RA supported (12 microg per g of diet) pregnant rats with retinol (ROL) at the l

We have recently performed a successful repair of a total right anomalous pulmonary venous connection to the coronary sinus associated with mitral and tricuspid regurgitation. A 54-year-old female was inaccurately diagnosed as atrial septal defect associated with mitral and tricuspid regurgitation preoperatively. Operation revealed that all the right pulmonary veins connected to the coronary sinus. Mitral regurgitation which might be caused by distortion of the anterior leaflet was repaired by McGoon's technique. A Carpentire-Edwards ring was employed for the tricuspid annuloplasty. Repair of

OBJECTIVES: Acute kidney injury (AKI) is a relevant complication after transcatheter aortic valve replacement (TAVR). Venous congestion is recognized as a contributor to perioperative organ dysfunction. The Venous Excess Ultrasound Score (VExUS) provides a noninvasive assessment of systemic venous congestion. This study hypothesized that a higher pre- or postprocedural VExUS is associated with an increased risk of AKI following TAVR.
DESIGN: Retrospective register study.
SETTING: Two cardiovascular centers performing transcatheter aortic valve replacement.
PARTICIPANTS: A total of 101 patie

Nose cone entrapment is a rare but potentially serious complication of structural heart interventions. Most cases have been reported during transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI), typically related to heavy left ventricular outflow tract (LVOT) calcification, severe annular angulation, or under-expansion of the valve frame. Entrapment within vascular structures is much less common. We describe two unusual cases. The first involved femoral artery entrapment of the Evolut PRO+ nose cone due to a ProGlide suture knot, managed with a distal snaring technique but complicated by vascular inj

Partial anomalous pulmonary venous connection (PAPVC) is a rare congenital anomaly, and isolated left-sided PAPVC without atrial septal defect is extremely uncommon. We report a 70-year-old man with severe mitral regurgitation, atrial fibrillation, and chronic kidney disease, in whom preoperative imaging incidentally revealed left upper pulmonary vein drainage into the innominate vein via a vertical vein. Hemodynamic evaluation demonstrated a significant left-to-right shunt [pulmonary flow/systemic flow( Qp/Qs) =1.88]. Surgical treatment consisted of direct anastomosis of the vertical vein to
