Computed Tomography Assessment of the Bronchial Lumen-Vertebral Body and Pulmonary Artery-Vertebral Body Relationships in Cats Naturally Infected with Immature Dirofilaria immitis.

Feline heartworm disease, caused by Dirofilaria immitis, is often underdiagnosed, particularly during its larval stage, known as Heartworm-Associated Respiratory Disease, (HARD). This study aimed to quantify CT-detectable pulmonary changes in naturally infected cats. Computed tomography (CT) was performed in 38 cats: Group A (n = 30, symptomatic seropositive) and Group B (n = 8, asymptomatic seronegative). Bronchial and pulmonary artery diameters were indexed to the sixth thoracic vertebral body (T6) to calculate bronchial-to-vertebral body (B/VB) and pulmonary artery-to-vertebral body (A/VB)

Learning Curve Associated With Thoracoscopic Anterior Vertebral Body Tether and Double Anterior Vertebral Body Tether for Idiopathic Scoliosis: Analysis of Three Independent Surgeons.

BACKGROUND AND OBJECTIVES: Anterior vertebral body tether (VBT) is a fusionless approach to treat idiopathic scoliosis, and surgeons are beginning to implement the technique into current practice. This study aims to evaluate the learning curve for single and double VBT. METHODS: A retrospective review of 3 surgeons' first 40 single and 20 double VBT was performed. Skeletally immature patients with idiopathic scoliosis who underwent thoracic (single) or thoracolumbar (double) VBT were included. Thoracic VBT was done via video-assisted thoracoscopic surgery and lumbar VBT through a mini-open re

Three-dimensional vertebral shape changes confirm growth modulation after anterior vertebral body tethering for idiopathic scoliosis.

PURPOSE: To evaluate three-dimensional (3D) vertebra and disk shape changes over 2 years following anterior vertebral body tether (AVBT) placement in patients with idiopathic scoliosis (IS). METHODS: Patients with right thoracic IS treated with AVBT were retrospectively evaluated. 3D reconstructions were created from biplanar radiographs. Vertebral body and disk height (anterior, posterior, left and right) and shape (wedging angle) were recorded over the three apical segments in the local vertebral reference planes. Changes in height and wedging were measured through 2 years postoperatively.

Vertebral body stenting versus kyphoplasty for the treatment of osteoporotic vertebral compression fractures: a randomized trial.

BACKGROUND: In the treatment of vertebral compression fractures, vertebral body stenting with an expandable scaffold inserted before application of the bone cement was developed to impede secondary loss of vertebral height encountered in patients treated with balloon kyphoplasty. The purpose of this study was to clarify whether there are relevant differences between balloon kyphoplasty and vertebral body stenting with regard to perioperative and postoperative findings. METHODS: In a two-armed randomized controlled trial, patients with a total of 100 fresh osteoporotic vertebral compression fr

The effect of angular mismatch between vertebral endplate and vertebral body replacement endplate on implant subsidence.

STUDY DESIGN: Comparative biomechanical study. OBJECTIVE: To determine whether an angular mismatch between the vertebral body replacement (VBR) endplate and the simulated foam vertebral endplate leads to accelerated subsidence in a cyclic compression model of the VBR-vertebra interface. SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: One of the main complications of the VBR surgery is postoperative subsidence and collapse of the VBR implant into the adjacent vertebral bodies. Although numerous factors affecting intervertebral cage subsidence have been cited, few studies have proposed factors responsible for VBR

Outcomes and complications of vertebral body tethering by patient gender.

PURPOSE: Non-fusion surgical options for pediatric scoliosis management such as vertebral body tethering (VBT) offer an alternative to spinal fusion. With this study, we aim to evaluate the postoperative outcomes in boys versus girls who have undergone VBT. Our hypothesis is that girls and boys will have similar outcomes by 2-year follow-up. METHODS: This study employed a review of retrospective data for patients who underwent VBT at 10 sites between 2011 and 2020. Patients were stratified based on gender. All patients had preoperative and 2-year follow-up and were evaluated for curve correct

Making the Case for Vertebral Body Tethering: What's the Evidence?

Vertebral body tethering (VBT) is a growth-modulating, motion-preserving surgical alternative to posterior spinal fusion for select patients with adolescent idiopathic scoliosis. This review critically appraises the current evidence surrounding VBT, including surgical indications, technical considerations, radiographic and functional outcomes, and comparative data versus fusion and emphasizes patient selection based on skeletal maturity. The article also explores emerging applications in skeletally mature and non-idiopathic populations and highlights ongoing innovations in implant design and p

Anterior Vertebral Body Tethering: A Review of the Available Evidence.

Idiopathic scoliosis is a complex three-dimensional deformity of the spine with anterior overgrowth (hypokyphosis), coronal curvature, and axial rotation. Scoliosis treatment in the skeletally immature spine is therapeutically challenging because of growth and was commonly limited to observation, bracing treatment, or fusion. Fusion accomplishes powerful deformity correction at the expense of future growth and mobility of the involved segments, increasing the risk of adjacent segment degeneration and intervertebral disk disease later in life. Anterior vertebral body tethering is a motion-prese

The progression of the vertebral body bruise associated with a spinal fracture.

BACKGROUND: Advances in magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) have made it possible to find the vertebral body bruise (VBB), which was not found in computed tomography (CT) after trauma. There has been only one study with adult patients about whether traumatic VBB will cause a collapse of the vertebral body or not. The purpose is to elucidate the progression of VBB in non-osteoporotic adult patients and to identify the possible factors influencing the progression. METHOD: The VBB was defined on MRI as band-like or diffuse zones of high signal intensity on T2-weighted sequences without fracture of

Pyogenic Vertebral Body Osteomyelitis in a Child: A Case Report.

INTRODUCTION: Pyogenic vertebral body osteomyelitis is rarer in children in comparison to adults. A rare case of pyogenic vertebral body osteomyelitis in a 10-year-old male is presented which was managed conservatively with antibiotics on the basis of antibiogram of blood culture. With 6 weeks of antibiotic therapy and at 12-month follow-up, the patient has no symptoms with no affection of any activity. This should be considered as a differential diagnosis in pediatric patients presenting with atypical symptoms related to spine and hip. CASE REPORT: A 10-year-old child presented with a 7-day

Influence of blood supply on fracture healing of vertebral bodies.

INTRODUCTION: The relevance of blood supply for bone fracture healing has been discussed throughout the literature, using scaphoids as the most referred to. But, there is virtually nothing known about the relevance of blood supply for the vertebral fracture healing and even the guidelines of AO do not deal with this issue. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A prospective cohort study of 107 patients was run from January 2016 to December 2016, with 54 male and 53 female patients, who were treated for traumatic vertebral fractures of thoracolumbar spine using posterior stabilization only. Hox genes and regional patterning of the vertebrate body plan.

Several decades have passed since the discovery of Hox genes in the fruit fly Drosophila melanogaster. Their unique ability to regulate morphologies along the anteroposterior (AP) axis (Lewis, 1978) earned them well-deserved attention as important regulators of embryonic development. Phenotypes due to loss- and gain-of-function mutations in mouse Hox genes have revealed that the spatio-temporally controlled expression of these genes is critical for the correct morphogenesis of embryonic axial structures. Here, we review recent novel insight into the modalities of Hox protein function in impart

Distractible vertebral body replacement for the thoracic and lumbar spine.

We retrospectively evaluated the results after corporectomy and vertebral body replacement in 40 patients with thoracic or lumbar spine collapse due to tumour osteolysis, unstable fractures, spondylodiscitis and Paget's disease. They underwent posterior transpedicular instrumentation followed 7 to 21 days later by vertebral body replacement with a distractible device, the "Obelisc" cage, filled up with autogenous/allogeneic bone graft. The mean residual kyphosis after surgery was only 13.8 degrees. After a mean follow-up period of 16.3 months, there was a mean loss of correction of 1.1 degrees

The monotonic and fatigue properties of osteoporotic thoracic vertebral bodies.

STUDY DESIGN: Measurement of the monotonic and fatigue properties of osteoporotic thoracic vertebral bodies. OBJECTIVES: To determine the loading values at which osteoporotic vertebral bodies are susceptible to failure. SUMMARY OF BACKGROUND DATA: Vertebral compression fractures are the most common osteoporotic fracture. Eighty-three percent of vertebral compression fractures are caused by moderate or less trauma, and there is not a specific traumatic event in 59% of these cases. Fatigue loading can lead to premature failure, although the relationship between loading and cycles to failure is

The biomechanical basis of vertebral body fragility in men and women.

The aim of this study was to quantify the biomechanical basis for vertebral fracture risk in elderly men and women. A bone is likely to fracture when the loads imposed are similar to or greater than its strength. To quantify this risk, we developed a fracture risk index (FRI) based on the ratio of the vertebral body compressive load and strength. Loads were determined by upper body weight, height, and the muscle moment arm, and strength was estimated from cross-sectional area (CSA) and volumetric bone mineral density (vBMD). With loads less than the strength of the bone, the FRI remains < 1. F
