Distribution of chymoelastases and trypsin-like enzymes in five species of entomopathogenic deuteromycetes.

Nine isolates of the entomopathogenic deuteromycetes Metarhizium anisopliae, Beauveria bassiana, Verticillium lecanii, Nomuraea rileyi, and Aschersonia aleyrodis produced basic (pI greater than 7.0) chymoelastases that possessed extended binding sites, comprising at least four or five subsites, with preference for hydrophobic residues at the primary binding site. Most isolates also produced additional acidic enzymes with similar specificities against ester and amide substrates but which lacked activity against elastin. Both acidic and basic enzymes degraded high protein azure or locust cuticle

Novel carbazole-triazole-thioether conjugates as multifunctional antimicrobial agents against phytopathogen.

Carbazole and triazole derivatives exhibit diverse biological activities and pharmacological properties. Herein, we report a series of novel 1,2,4-triazole thioethers containing carbazole moiety and evaluate their biological activities. The results showed that some of the title compounds exhibited excellent antibacterial activities in vitro against Xanthomonas axonopodis pv. citri (Xac) in vitro. In particular, compound E36 exhibits the most excellent antibacterial effect against Xac, with an EC50 value of 9.4 mg/L. This efficacy was significantly superior to those of the control drugs bismert

Arabidopsis mutants of sphingolipid fatty acid α-hydroxylases accumulate ceramides and salicylates.

In Arabidopsis, the fatty acid moiety of sphingolipids is mainly α-hydroxylated. The consequences of a reduction in this modification were analysed. Mutants of both Fatty Acid Hydroxylase genes (AtFAH1 and AtFAH2) were analysed for sphingolipid profiles. To elucidate further consequences of the mutations, metabolic analyses were performed and the influence on pathogen defence was determined. Ceramide and glucosylceramide profiles of double-mutant plants showed a reduction in sphingolipids with α-hydroxylated fatty acid moieties, and an accumulation of sphingolipids without these moieties. In a

Growth characteristics of selected fungi on polyvinyl chloride film.

The objective of this study was to determine if plasticized polyvinyl chloride film would support the growth of any of nine species of fungi. The film was suspended in distilled water with no nutrients or with glucose or ammonium sulfate. Spores of each of the test species were inoculated into the suspension medium, and the mixture was incubated at 30 degrees C for up to 18 weeks. Most species were found to be capable of utilizing the film for carbon or nitrogen when the other nutrient was supplied. Only two species, Aspergillus fischeri and Paecilomyces sp., were found to be capable of utiliz

Double Gamers-Can Modified Natural Regulators of Higher Plants Act as Antagonists against Phytopathogens? The Case of Jasmonic Acid Derivatives.

As key players in biotic stress response of plants, jasmonic acid (JA) and its derivatives cover a specific and prominent role in pathogens-mediated signaling and hence are promising candidates for a sustainable management of phytopathogenic fungi. Recently, JA directed antimicrobial effects on plant pathogens has been suggested, supporting the theory of oxylipins as double gamers in plant-pathogen interaction. Based on these premises, six derivatives (dihydrojasmone and cis-jasmone, two thiosemicarbazonic derivatives and their corresponding complexes with copper) have been evaluated against 1

Genetic polymorphism and plant growth promotion traits of potent fungal entomopathogens of rice leaf folder.

Entomopathogenic fungal biocides are preferred for environment friendly sustainable management of insect pests due to their host specificity and harmlessness to non-target insects. Plant growth promotion (PGP) functions of the entomofungi are also important attributes but hitherto insignificantly explored. Therefore, virulence of 17 natural fungal entomocides (Cordyceps, Beauveria, Metarhizium, Nomuraea, Fusarium, Verticillium, Trichoderma and Paecilomyces spp.) were evaluated for pathogenicity against five rice pests (brown plant hopper (Nilaparvata lugens) and green leaf hopper (Nephotettix

Synthesis and mode of action studies of novel {2-(3-R-1H-1,2,4-triazol-5-yl)phenyl}amines to combat pathogenic fungi.

Due to their high specificity and efficacy, triazoles have become versatile antifungals to treat fungal infections in human healthcare and to control phytopathogenic fungi in agriculture. However, azole resistance is an emerging problem affecting human health as well as food security. Here we describe the synthesis of 10 novel {2-(3-R-1H-1,2,4-triazol-5-yl)phenyl}amines. Their structure was ascertained by liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry, 1 H and 13 C NMR, and elemental analysis data. Applying an in vitro growth assay, these triazoles show moderate to significant antifungal activity aga

Effects of Sulfur Dioxide on Disease Resistance and Storage Quality of Durian (Durio zibethinus L.): A Comprehensive Analysis Integrating GC-IMS, HTS, Physiological and Biochemical Parameters.

In this study, we examined the multifaceted effects of sulfur dioxide (SO2) on the postharvest preservation of durian and the underlying potential mechanism of disease resistance. Our results show that 2% SO2 preserved the good quality of durian by inhibiting its respiration rate and ethylene production (day 15), reducing weight loss, and maintaining color, firmness, and ascorbic acid content. Furthermore, the volatile organic compounds (VOCs) were investigated further by gas chromatography-ion mobility spectrometry (GC-IMS). Ester compounds (fruity aroma of durian) were primarily intensified

The occurrence of molds in patients with chronic sinusitis.

Chronic rhinosinusitis (CRS) is a common inflammatory condition of nasal and paranasal sinus mucosa. Although pathogenic bacteria were postulated as main etiological factor responsible for most cases of CRS, the involvement of molds was recently proved in some cases. The aim of the study was to conduct mycological analysis of material obtained from patients operated on due to chronic sinusitis. The study included 107 patients, 45 women and 62 men. During the surgery, a fragment of mucosa from the region of the ethmoid bulla was obtained as microbiological characteristics of this material close

Moderately ectopic expressing NLP27 in potato confers high disease resistance without yield penalty.

A 27-aa peptide coding sequence NLP27 was moderately overexpressed in potato, conferring enhancing plant resistance to Phytophthora infestans and Streptomyces scabies infection without yield penalty through plant immunity promotion. The conserved short peptides derived from pathogen effectors can stimulate plant innate immunity response against pathogens through exogenous application. However, it remains to be explored whether the ectopic expression of these peptides in plants can trigger plant defense responses and affect plant growth. Here, we modified the nucleotide sequence of conserved 27

Exploring a Role for the Arabidopsis TIR-X Gene (TIRP) in the Defense Against Pathogenic Fungi or Insect Herbivory Attack.

Plants are challenged regularly with multiple types of biotic stress factors, such as pathogens or insect herbivores, in their environment. To detect and defend against pathogens, plants have evolved an innate immune system in which intracellular receptors in the so-called effector-triggered immunity play a vital role. In Arabidopsis thaliana the Toll/interleukin-1 receptors (TIRs) domain is related to intracellular immunity receptors, for example in TIR-NBS-LRR (TNL) proteins. Among the TIR domain carrying proteins, very little is known about the function of the TIR-X proteins. Here, we focus

The mycobiome in murine intestine is more perturbed by food arsenic exposure than in excreted feces.

Arsenic is a global pollutant that can accumulate in rice and has been confirmed to disturb the gut microbiome. By contrast, the influence on the gut mycobiome is seldom concerned because fungi comprise a numerically small proportion of the whole gut microcommunity. To expand the detection of the mycobiome in different gut sections of mammals and investigate the influence of food arsenic on the gut mycobiome in the digestive tract, we treated mice with feeds containing different compositions of arsenic species (7.3% sodium arsenate, 72.7% sodium arsenite, 1.0% sodium monomethylarsonate, and 19

Determination of the microbial communities of Guizhou Suantang, a traditional Chinese fermented sour soup, and correlation between the identified microorganisms and volatile compounds.

Guizhou Suantang (GZST), a type of sour soup, is a traditional fermented food that can be classified into Hong Suantang (HST) and Bai Suantang (BST). GZST possesses unique flavors arising from various microbiota in fermentation ecosystems. However, the association between these microbiota and flavors remains poorly understood. Accordingly, this study analyzed the volatile components and microbial communities of GZST via headspace solid-phase microextraction coupled with gas chromatography-mass spectrometry and high-throughput 16S rRNA and internal transcribed spacer sequencing techniques. Growth-promoting effects of Aspergillus Elegans and the dark septate endophyte (DSE) Periconia macrospinosa on cucumber.

Cucurbits are subject to a variety of stresses that limit their sustainable production, despite their important role in ensuring food security and nutrition. Plant stress tolerance can be enhanced through fungal endophytes. In this study, two endophytes isolated from wild plant roots, were tested to determine their effect on the growth promotion of cucumber (Cucumis sativus L.) plants. The phylogenetic analysis revealed that the designated isolates were Aspergillus elegans and Periconia macrospinosa. The results of the Plant Growth Promoting Fungal (PGPF) tests showed that both Aspergillus ele

Endophytic bacterial communities of field-grown potato plants and their plant-growth-promoting and antagonistic abilities.

To study the effect of plant growth on potato-associated bacteria, the composition and properties of bacteria colonizing the endosphere of field-grown potato were analyzed by a multiphasic approach. The occurrence and diversity of potato-associated bacteria were monitored by a cultivation-independent approach, using terminal restriction fragment length polymorphism analysis of 16S rDNA. The patterns obtained revealed a high heterogeneity of community composition and suggested the existence of plant-specific communities. However, endophytic populations correlated to a certain extent with plant

Chemical Characterization and Antimicrobial Activity of Pyrolysis Liquids from Walnut Residue.

Pyrolysis liquid (PL) derived from biomass pyrolysis exhibits biopesticidal properties and represents a promising value-added product within the sustainable circular economy framework. However, knowledge about the antimicrobial potential of PLs produced from walnut residue at different pyrolysis temperatures remains limited. We investigated the chemical composition and antimicrobial activity of PLs obtained from agricultural walnut residue (Juglans regia L.) against selected plant pathogenic bacteria and fungi. PLs were produced at four temperature ranges: 200-300 °C (W-1), 300-400 °C (W-2), 4
