Vestibular input to brain monoamine neurons--a review.

Yates et al. reported that serotonergic RN neurons are associated with vestibulo-sympathetic responses and may control BP changes during body repositioning (Yates et al., 1992; 1993). Pompeiano et al. demonstrated that LC-NA neurons participate in the postural control and modify the vestibulo-spinal reflex (Pompeiano et al., 1990; 1991a; 2001). Nishiike et al. (1996a) examined the effects of caloric vestibular stimulation on the neuronal activity of LC-NA neurons in rats. The predominant effect of CA with both hot- and cold-water on the electrical activity of LC neurons is inhibitory and persi

Efferent neurons and vestibular cross talk in the frog.

A galvanic stimulus (30- to 120-s, 0.3-mA constant current pulse) was used to depolarize the spike-generating region of horizontal and anterior canal afferent neurons. The galvanically induced spike activity from these neurons served as a driving input to the efferent vestibular system in the bullfrog. Efferent-mediated effects were assessed by intracellular recordings of posterior canal afferent spike activity, either ipsilateral or contralateral to the driving stimulus. Ipsilateral to the driving stimulus, efferent-mediated spike rate changes occurred in 62 (39%) of 158 posterior canal affer

Electrophysiological Characterization of Murine Vestibular Efferent Neurons and Modulation by Acute Peripheral Vestibular Deprivation.

Vestibular efferent neurons in the brainstem provide direct cholinergic innervation to peripheral vestibular organs, thereby modulating their sensory responsiveness. In this study, a genetically targeted mouse model with choline acetyltransferase-driven fluorescent labeling enabled the precise localization of these neurons to the dorsolateral region of the genu of the facial nerve. Whole-cell patch-clamp recordings in acute brainstem slices revealed that virtually all neurons exhibited spontaneous action potential firing, with marked heterogeneity in discharge patterns and after-hyperpolarizat

Integration of vestibular and hindlimb inputs by vestibular nucleus neurons: multisensory influences on postural control.

We recently demonstrated in decerebrate and conscious cat preparations that hindlimb somatosensory inputs converge with vestibular afferent input onto neurons in multiple central nervous system (CNS) locations that participate in balance control. Although it is known that head position and limb state modulate postural reflexes, presumably through vestibulospinal and reticulospinal pathways, the combined influence of the two inputs on the activity of neurons in these brainstem regions is unknown. In the present study, we evaluated the responses of vestibular nucleus (VN) neurons to vestibular a

Developmental regulation of the membrane properties of central vestibular neurons by sensory vestibular information in the mouse.

The effect of the lack of vestibular input on the membrane properties of central vestibular neurons was studied by using a strain of transgenic, vestibular-deficient mutant KCNE1(-/-) mice where the hair cells of the inner ear degenerate just after birth. Despite the absence of sensory vestibular input, their central vestibular pathways are intact. Juvenile and adult homozygous mutant have a normal resting posture, but show a constant head bobbing behaviour and display the shaker/waltzer phenotype characterized by rapid bilateral circling during locomotion. In juvenile mice, the KCNE1 mutation

Glutamatergic vestibular neurons express Fos after vestibular stimulation and project to the NTS and the PBN in rats.

In this study, retrograde tracing method combined with phosphate-activated glutaminase (PAG) and Fos immunofluorescence histochemistry was used to identify glutamatergic vestibular nucleus (VN) neurons receiving vestibular inputs and projecting to the nucleus of the solitary tract (NTS) and the parabrachial nucleus (PBN). Conscious animals were subjected to 120 min Ferris-wheel like rotation stimulation. Neuronal activation was assessed by Fos expression in the nucleus of VN neurons. After Fluoro-gold (FG) injection into the caudal NTS, approximately 48% FG-labeled VN neurons were immunoreacti

Vestibular neurons with direct projections to the solitary nucleus in the rat.

Anterograde and retrograde tract tracing were combined with neurotransmitter and modulator immunolabeling to identify the chemical anatomy of vestibular nuclear neurons with direct projections to the solitary nucleus in rats. Direct, sparsely branched but highly varicose axonal projections from neurons in the caudal vestibular nuclei to the solitary nucleus were observed. The vestibular neurons giving rise to these projections were predominantly located in ipsilateral medial vestibular nucleus. The cell bodies were intensely glutamate immunofluorescent, and their axonal processes contained ves

Gastric related neurons in the rat medial vestibular nucleus.

Some structural and functional peculiarities of the rat vestibular nuclei neurones involved in realisation of vestibular-gastrointestinal reflectory reactions were studied. After microinjection of a horseradish peroxidase solution in the 'gastric' area of the nucleus tractus solitarius, retrogradely-labelled cell bodies were found in caudal part of the medial vestibular nucleus. Electrical stimulation of these neurons resulted in the decrease of gastric tone. The respiratory arrest was registered simultaneously. The results suggest that activation of the identified vestibular neurons can induc

Developing a Diagnostic Algorithm for Identifying Vestibular Neuronitis in Acute Dizziness: An Overview of Epidemiology, Pathogenesis, and Evidence-Based Guidelines for Diagnostic Approaches.

Vestibular neuronitis (VN) is a prevalent peripheral vestibular disorder presenting with sudden unilateral vestibular loss, leading to acute vertigo without associated cochlear or neurological symptoms. Diagnosis remains challenging due to symptom overlap with other vestibular and central disorders. This study reviews the epidemiology, pathogenesis, and diagnostic approaches for VN to propose a streamlined, evidence-based diagnostic algorithm. A comprehensive literature review was conducted, analyzing 114 studies, including randomized controlled trials, systematic reviews, and clinical guideli

Presynaptic GABA(B) receptors decrease neurotransmitter release in vestibular nuclei neurons during vestibular compensation.

Unilateral damage to the peripheral vestibular receptors precipitates a debilitating syndrome of oculomotor and balance deficits at rest, which extensively normalize during the first week after the lesion due to vestibular compensation. In vivo studies suggest that GABA(B) receptor activation facilitates recovery. However, the presynaptic or postsynaptic sites of action of GABA(B) receptors in vestibular nuclei neurons after lesions have not been determined. Accordingly, here presynaptic and postsynaptic GABA(B) receptor activity in principal cells of the tangential nucleus, a major avian vest

Development of NIR photocleavable nanoparticles with BDNF for vestibular neuron regeneration.

Among nanoparticle platforms, light or photoresponsive nanoparticles have emerged as a promising drug delivery strategy with spatiotemporal control while minimizing off-target effects. The characteristic absorption spectrum of the photoresponsive moiety dictates the wavelength of light needed to activate bond cleavage. However, the low tissue penetration depth limit and short-wavelength ultraviolet (UV) cellular toxicity are considered disadvantageous. This study developed a vestibular ganglion neuron organoid as a model for vestibulopathy. UV and near-infrared (NIR) radiation targeted the inn

Diversity of vestibular nuclei neurons targeted by cerebellar nodulus inhibition.

A functional role of the cerebellar nodulus and ventral uvula (lobules X and IXc,d of the vermis) for vestibular processing has been strongly suggested by direct reciprocal connections with the vestibular nuclei, as well as direct vestibular afferent inputs as mossy fibres. Here we have explored the types of neurons in the macaque vestibular nuclei targeted by nodulus/ventral uvula inhibition using orthodromic identification from the caudal vermis. We found that all nodulus-target neurons are tuned to vestibular stimuli, and most are insensitive to eye movements. Such non-eye-movement neurons

Cultured vestibular ganglion neurons demonstrate latent HSV1 reactivation.

OBJECTIVES/HYPOTHESIS: Vestibular neuritis is a common cause of both acute and chronic vestibular dysfunction. Multiple pathologies have been hypothesized to be the causative agent of vestibular neuritis; however, whether herpes simplex type I (HSV1) reactivation occurs within the vestibular ganglion has not been demonstrated previously by experimental evidence. We developed an in vitro system to study HSV1 infection of vestibular ganglion neurons (VGNs) using a cell culture model system. STUDY DESIGN: basic science study. RESULTS: Lytic infection of cultured rat VGNs was observed following

Primary neurotransmitters and regulatory substances onto vestibular nucleus neurons.

This review article focused on the primary neurotransmitters involved in transmission from the otolith to the vestibular nucleus (VN), especially in relation to the neurotransmission to the VN neurons (gravity-sensitive neurons) activated by tilt stimulation. The medial vestibular nucleus (MVN) neurons were classified in 8 types (alpha-theta) according to the patterns in response to the clockwise and counterclockwise tilt-stimulations. The tilt-induced firing was inhibited by GDEE (a non-selective glutamate receptor antagonist) and/or atropine (a muscarinic receptor antagonist). Thus, glutamat

Vestibular Precision at the Level of Perception, Eye Movements, Posture, and Neurons.

Precision and accuracy are two fundamental properties of any system, including the nervous system. Reduced precision (i.e., imprecision) results from the presence of neural noise at each level of sensory, motor, and perceptual processing. This review has three objectives: (1) to show the importance of studying vestibular precision, and specifically that studying accuracy without studying precision ignores fundamental aspects of the vestibular system; (2) to synthesize key hypotheses about precision in vestibular perception, the vestibulo-ocular reflex, posture, and neurons; and (3) to show tha

The Degeneration of the Vestibular Efferent Neurons After Intratympanic Gentamicin Administration.

Intratympanic gentamicin (ITG) has been used to treat refractory Ménière's disease. Disequilibrium after ITG was still a challenge for some patients, and the underlying mechanism is poorly understood. Our previous study demonstrated that gentamicin distributed in the bilateral vestibular efferent neurons (VEN) after ITG; however, does it lead to VEN damage and cause further disequilibrium in patients following ITG? In this study, we observed severe damaged gentamicin-positive neurons of VEN and severe fractured myelin layer plates around neural fibers when viewed under transmission electron mi

Vestibular nucleus neurons respond to hindlimb movement in the conscious cat.

The limbs constitute the sole interface with the ground during most waking activities in mammalian species; it is therefore expected that somatosensory inputs from the limbs provide important information to the central nervous system for balance control. In the decerebrate cat model, the activity of a subset of neurons in the vestibular nuclei (VN) has been previously shown to be modulated by hindlimb movement. However, decerebration can profoundly alter the effects of sensory inputs on the activity of brain stem neurons, resulting in epiphenomenal responses. Thus, before this study, it was un

Postvibration changes in the spike activity of neurons in the medial vestibular nucleus.

Changes in the baseline spike activity in the medial vestibular nucleus were studied after exposure to vibration for 5, 10, and 15 days. Studies addressed the distributions of neurons within this structure in terms of the regularity of their spike activity, the dynamics of neural flows, and the modalities of interspike histogram modalities. Mean values were calculated for the major statistical measures of baseline spike activity. Statistically significant changes in the major characteristics of neuron activity were seen in the medial vestibular nucleus at different periods of vibration exposur
