Cerebellar cortical efferents of the posterior lobe vermis in a prosimian primate (Galago) and the tree shrew (Tupaia).

The topographical organization of cerebellar cortical efferents of the posterior lobe vermis was studied in a prosimian primate (Galago senegalensis) and the tree shrew (Tupaia glis). Two patterns emerge; one which shows longitudinal zones of the entire vermis and a second which shows that induvidual lobules within the overall longitudinal pattern terminate in specific areas of the ipsilateral medial cerebellar nucleus (NM) and vestibular complix. The posterior lobe vermis consists of a narrow midline portion which projects bilaterally into the NM and a paramidline zone which projects only int

Vestibular migraine: clinical aspects and pathophysiology.

Vestibular migraine is becoming recognised as a distinct clinical entity that accounts for a high proportion of patients with vestibular symptoms. A temporal overlap between vestibular symptoms, such as vertigo and head-movement intolerance, and migraine symptoms, such as headache, photophobia, and phonophobia, is a requisite diagnostic criterion. Physical examination and laboratory testing are usually normal in vestibular migraine but can be used to rule out other vestibular disorders with overlapping symptoms. The pathophysiology of vestibular migraine is incompletely understood but plausibl

Vestibular modulation of the tail of the rat striatum.

Fragmented and piecemeal evidence from animal and human studies suggests that vestibular information is transmitted to the striatum, a part of the basal ganglia that degenerates in Parkinson's Disease. Nonetheless, surprisingly little is known about the precise effects of activation of the vestibular system on the striatum. Electrophysiological studies have yielded inconsistent results, with many studies reporting only sparse responses to vestibular stimulation in the dorsomedial striatum. In this study, we sought to elucidate the effects of electrical stimulation of the peripheral vestibular

Abnormal vestibular brainstem structure and function in an animal model of autism spectrum disorder.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a neurodevelopmental disorder that includes several key neuropathological changes and behavioral impairments. In utero exposure to the anti-epileptic valproic acid (VPA) increases risk of an ASD diagnosis in human subjects and timed in utero exposure to VPA is a clinically relevant animal model of ASD. Many human subjects with ASD have cerebellar hypoplasia, fewer Purkinje cells, difficulties with balance, ophthalmic dysfunction and abnormal responses to vestibular stimulation and such vestibular difficulties are likely under reported in ASD. We have recently

[Vestibular Dysfunction in Replication Factor C Subunit 1 (RFC1) Spectrum Disorder].

More than 90% of replication factor c subunit 1 (RFC1) gene-related spectrum disorders such as cerebellar ataxia with neuropathy and vestibular areflexia syndrome (CANVAS) have bilateral vestibular dysfunction. A case with CANVAS presented in this paper showed repeat extension of AAGGG in the intron region of the RFC1 gene, and showed bilateral vestibular dysfunction in caloric test, vestibular evoked myogenic potential, video Head Impulse Test and rotary chair test. Visual enhanced vestibulo-ocular reflex tests also revealed abnormalities, suggesting the presence of combined lesions of the ce

Vestibular nuclear infarction: Case series and review of the literature.

BACKGROUND AND PURPOSE: Acute vestibular syndrome (AVS) is a common cause of emergency admittance and has very rarely been reported due to a vestibular nucleus infarction. Initial magnetic resonance imaging studies (MRIs) including diffusion-weighted images may reveal normal results and even bedside examination tests like HINTS battery which involves head impulse test (HIT), nystagmus and test of skew can be challenging in differing a peripheral vestibulopathy from a central lesion. METHODS: Four patients seen in the emergency department with AVS and evaluated with HINTS battery, cervical ves

Identification of neural networks that contribute to motion sickness through principal components analysis of fos labeling induced by galvanic vestibular stimulation.

Motion sickness is a complex condition that includes both overt signs (e.g., vomiting) and more covert symptoms (e.g., anxiety and foreboding). The neural pathways that mediate these signs and symptoms are yet to identified. This study mapped the distribution of c-fos protein (Fos)-like immunoreactivity elicited during a galvanic vestibular stimulation paradigm that is known to induce motion sickness in felines. A principal components analysis was used to identify networks of neurons activated during this stimulus paradigm from functional correlations between Fos labeling in different nuclei.

Impact of repeated intranasal gentamicin irrigation on structure and function of the vestibular brainstem.

Gentamicin is an aminoglycoside antibiotic that broadly targets Gram-negative bacteria. While gentamicin is a clinically effective antibiotic, it has significant oto- and nephrotoxicity. In human subjects, repeated exposure to gentamicin results in dizziness, tinnitus, and high frequency hearing loss. Gentamicin has similar effects across animal species and through several different routes of delivery, including injection and direct deposits in the tympanic cavity. Gentamicin can also be administered intranasally to treat sinusitis in humans and this route of delivery is believed to minimize t

[Peripheral vestibular neuropathy and a central vestibular equivalent].

The results of the initial and follow-up examinations of 217 patients with vestibular neuritis and 63 patients with a so called "vestibular neuritis syndrome" were statistically evaluated and quantified using the vestibular index. The results for patients with vestibular neuritis were compared at the different stages to those of patients after neurectomy of the vestibular nerve. The site of the lesion in patients with vestibular neuritis may therefore be in the region of Scarpa's ganglion (retrolabyrinthine). Alternatively the total peripheral end-organ may be affected. This conclusion agrees

Vestibular input to brain monoamine neurons--a review.

Yates et al. reported that serotonergic RN neurons are associated with vestibulo-sympathetic responses and may control BP changes during body repositioning (Yates et al., 1992; 1993). Pompeiano et al. demonstrated that LC-NA neurons participate in the postural control and modify the vestibulo-spinal reflex (Pompeiano et al., 1990; 1991a; 2001). Nishiike et al. (1996a) examined the effects of caloric vestibular stimulation on the neuronal activity of LC-NA neurons in rats. The predominant effect of CA with both hot- and cold-water on the electrical activity of LC neurons is inhibitory and persi

Development of vestibular afferent projections into the hindbrain and their central targets.

In contrast to most other sensory systems, hardly anything is known about the neuroanatomical development of central projections of primary vestibular neurons and how their second order target neurons develop. Recent data suggest that afferent projections may develop not unlike other sensory systems, forming first the overall projection by molecular means followed by an as yet unspecified phase of activity mediated refinement. The latter aspect has not been tested critically and most molecules that guide the initial projection are unknown. The molecular and topological origin of the vestibular

Neural substrate of a cerebellar movement disorder induced by intracerebroventricular injection of propidium iodide in the rat: a Fos immunocytochemical study.

Intracerebroventricular (icv) injection of propidium iodide (PI) in the rat results in a transient movement disorder characterized by nystagmus, ataxia, and shaking. In the present study we used c-Fos as a marker for neuronal activation to investigate the neural substrate underlying this movement disorder. PI was injected into the lateral cerebral ventricle of freely moving rats through a previously implanted cannula. Animals were perfused 3 h after the injection and the brains were processed for c-Fos immunocytochemistry. Paired control animals were injected with saline. After PI injection, a

Using Cortical Neuron Markers to Target Cells in the Dorsal Cochlear Nucleus.

The dorsal cochlear nucleus (DCN) is a region of particular interest for auditory and tinnitus research. However, lack of useful genetic markers for in vivo manipulations hinders elucidation of the DCN contribution to tinnitus pathophysiology. This work assesses whether adeno-associated viral vectors (AAV) containing the calcium/calmodulin-dependent protein kinase 2α (CaMKIIα) promoter and a mouse line of nicotinic acetylcholine receptor α2 subunit (Chrna2)-Cre can target specific DCN populations. We found that CaMKIIα cannot be used to target excitatory fusiform DCN neurons as labeled cells s

[On the mechanism of antimotion sickness effects of mexidol].

The path-clamp method used within the whole-cell configuration in experiments with convoluted medullar oblongata sections obtained from white mongrel male rats aged 13 to 17 days evidenced that 5 mV of mexidol caused 96 +/- 2% inhibition of the excitation postsynaptic current in neurons of the medial vestibular nucleus generated by the depolarization step of 10 mV (holding potential = -70 my). This means that the antimotion sickness effect of mexidol has its origin in the ion mechanisms with involvement of the glutamate- and GABAergic components, primarily inhibition of ion currents through ch

Torsional nystagmus. A neuro-otological and MRI study of thirty-five cases.

Thirty-five patients with torsional nystagmus (TN) underwent vestibular and ocular motor assessment and magnetic resonance image (MRI) scanning of the head. Patients were divided into two groups according to whether TN was predominant and present in primary gaze (Group I, 23 patients) or elicited by head positioning or gaze deviation and less prominent than other concurrent nystagmus (Group II, 12 patients). The main aetiologies in both groups were demyelination, vascular disease and posterior fossa tumours. In Group I, a frequent pattern of findings, occurring in 30-50% of cases, was a calori

Properties of Deiters' neurons and inhibitory synaptic transmission in the mouse lateral vestibular nucleus.

Deiters' neurons, located exclusively in the lateral vestibular nucleus (LVN), are involved in vestibulospinal reflexes, innervate extensor motoneurons that drive antigravity muscles, and receive inhibitory inputs from the cerebellum. We investigated intrinsic membrane properties, short-term plasticity, and inhibitory synaptic inputs of mouse Deiters' and non-Deiters' neurons within the LVN. Deiters' neurons are distinguished from non-Deiters' neurons by their very low input resistance (105.8 vs. 521.8 MΩ, respectively), long axons that project as far as the ipsilateral lumbar spinal cord, and

The reticulovestibular projection in the cat. An experimental study with silver impregnation methods.

The distribution of degeneration in the vestibular nuclei (VN) has been studied in transversely cut sections from 9 cats with stereotaxically performed lesions in the main reticular formation (RF) of the brain stem (Nauta of Fink and Heimer method). No projection was found from the mesencephalic reticular formation (R.mes.) and nucleus reticularis ventralis (R.v.). However, the reticular nuclei gigantocellularis (R.gc.), parvocellularis (R.p.c.) and pontis oralis (R.p.o.) were found to project bilaterally onto the 4 main vestibular nuclei with an ipsilateral overweight. Cholinergic mechanisms related to REM sleep. III. Tonic and phasic inhibition of monosynaptic reflexes induced by an anticholinesterase in the decerebrate cat.

The depression of the postural activity induced by intravenous injection of eserine sulphate (0.1 mg/kg), an anticholinesterase, has been studied in precollicular decerebrate cats. The extensor and flexor monosynaptic reflexes elicited by single shock stimulation of the GS, P1-FDHL and DP nerves are tonically depressed during the episodes of postural atonia induced by the anticholinesterase. A further phasic depression of the monosynaptic reflexes occurs during the bursts of rapid eye movements (REM) typical of these episodes. These changes in spinal reflex activity closely resemble the tonic
