Distribution of androgen and estrogen receptor mRNA-containing cells in the rat brain: an in situ hybridization study.

The distribution of cells that express mRNA encoding the androgen (AR) and estrogen (ER) receptors was examined in adult male and female rats by using in situ hybridization. Specific labeling appeared to be largely, if not entirely, localized to neurons. AR and ER mRNA-containing neurons were widely distributed in the rat brain, with the greatest densities of cells in the hypothalamus, and in regions of the telencephalon that provide strong inputs in the medial preoptic and ventromedial nuclei, each of which is thought to play a key role in mediating the hormonal control of copulatory behavior

Secondary vestibulocerebellar projections to flocculonodular lobe in a prosimian primate, Galago senegalensis.

The organization of vestibulocerebellar projections to the flocculonodular and adjacent cortices were studied in Galago using horseradish peroxidase (HRP). Implants of HRP pellets or injections (0.14-0.95 microliter) were placed in floccular, parafloccular, nodular, and uvular cortices. Following survival times of 18-25 hours animals were killed via transcardiac perfusion of heparinized saline followed by a buffered solution of paraformaldehyde and glutaraldehyde. Tissues were processed using DAB as the chromogen. Consequent to floccular implants HRP-positive cells are found bilaterally in med

Functional connectome of brainstem nuclei involved in autonomic, limbic, pain and sensory processing in living humans from 7 Tesla resting state fMRI.

Despite remarkable advances in mapping the functional connectivity of the cortex, the functional connectivity of subcortical regions is understudied in living humans. This is the case for brainstem nuclei that control vital processes, such as autonomic, limbic, nociceptive and sensory functions. This is because of the lack of precise brainstem nuclei localization, of adequate sensitivity and resolution in the deepest brain regions, as well as of optimized processing for the brainstem. To close the gap between the cortex and the brainstem, on 20 healthy subjects, we computed a correlation-based

Use of a tissue clearing technique combined with retrograde trans-synaptic viral tracing to evaluate changes in mouse retinorecipient brain regions following optic nerve crush.

Successful establishment of reconnection between retinal ganglion cells and retinorecipient regions in the brain is critical to optic nerve regeneration. However, morphological assessments of retinorecipient regions are limited by the opacity of brain tissue. In this study, we used an innovative tissue cleaning technique combined with retrograde trans-synaptic viral tracing to observe changes in retinorecipient regions connected to retinal ganglion cells in mice after optic nerve injury. Specifically, we performed light-sheet imaging of whole brain tissue after a clearing process. We found tha

The reticulovestibular projection in the cat. An experimental study with silver impregnation methods.

The distribution of degeneration in the vestibular nuclei (VN) has been studied in transversely cut sections from 9 cats with stereotaxically performed lesions in the main reticular formation (RF) of the brain stem (Nauta of Fink and Heimer method). No projection was found from the mesencephalic reticular formation (R.mes.) and nucleus reticularis ventralis (R.v.). However, the reticular nuclei gigantocellularis (R.gc.), parvocellularis (R.p.c.) and pontis oralis (R.p.o.) were found to project bilaterally onto the 4 main vestibular nuclei with an ipsilateral overweight. By far the greates cont

Vestibular function in degenerative parkinsonism.

INTRODUCTION: The degenerative pathology in Parkinson's disease (PD), multisystem atrophy (MSA) and progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP) have different spatial distribution in the brainstem. Our aim was find out in what way this pathology affects brainstem vestibular reflex pathways in each of these diseases. METHODS: We studied 30 patients: 15 with PD, 9 with PSP (Richardson syndrome) and 6 with MSA (cerebellar) and compared their results with results from 37 age-matched healthy controls (HC). Motor functions of the patient groups were evaluated with the Unified Parkinson's Disease Rating Sc

Pharmaceutical countermeasures have opposite effects on the utricles and semicircular canals in man.

INTRODUCTION: Sensory conflicts in the vestibular system lead to motion sickness of which space motion sickness (SMS) is a special case. SMS affects up to 70% of the astronauts during the first 3 days in space. The search for effective countermeasures has led to several nonpharmacological and pharmacological approaches. The current study focuses on the effects of lorazepam (1 mg), meclizine (25 mg), promethazine (25 mg), and scopolamine (0.4 mg) on the vestibular system, with special focus on the canal and otolith functions separately. METHODS: The study had a placebo-controlled, single blind

[Use of auditory brain stem implant in a patient with bilateral vestibular schwannoma (type 2 neurofibromatosis].

Surgical technique and functional results of implantation of the acoustic implant of the brain stem (BS) are described for a 16-year-old patient with bilateral vestibular shvannoma (neurofibromatosis of type 2). Initially, a large (IV degree) tumor was removed from the left cerebellopontile angle using the translabyrinthine-transcochlear approach. The function of the facial nerve recovered completely. The BS implant was implanted a year later in the course of removing shvannoma from the right cerebellopontile angle using the above approach. The patient received 22-channel implant Nucleus-CI22M

Cranial irradiation in childhood mimicking neurofibromatosis type II.

Neurofibromatosis type II (NF2) is a genetic disease characterized by bilateral vestibular schwannomas (VS) and other nerve system tumors. However, such tumors may be associated with environmental, rather than a genetic, etiology. Individuals fulfilling the clinical criteria of NF2 who had been treated by head ionized irradiation at a young age were compared for disease characteristics and molecular analysis with non-irradiated sporadic NF2 cases. In the study cohort, three of 33 sporadic adult cases fulfilling NF2 diagnostic criteria had a history of early age cranial irradiation exposure. No

Npr2 null mutants show initial overshooting followed by reduction of spiral ganglion axon projections combined with near-normal cochleotopic projection.

Npr2 (natriuretic peptide receptor 2) affects bifurcation of neural crest or placode-derived afferents upon entering the brain stem/spinal cord, leading to a lack of either rostral or caudal branches. Previous work has shown that early embryonic growth of cochlear and vestibular afferents is equally affected in this mutant but later work on postnatal Npr2 point mutations suggested some additional effects on the topology of afferent projections and mild functional defects. Using multicolor lipophilic dye tracing, we show that absence of Npr2 has little to no effect on the initial patterning of

The segregation of Calb1, Calb2, and Prph neurons reveals distinct and mixed neuronal populations and projections to hair cells in the inner ear and central nuclei.

BACKGROUND: Knockin mouse models expressing calbindin (Calb1), calretinin (Calb2), and peripherin (Prph) exhibit changes in hair cells (HCs), spiral ganglion neurons (SGN), vestibular ganglion neurons (VGNs), and their central projections. RESULTS: Developing cristae HCs show strong Calb1-positive expression, but adult HCs are mainly Calb2-positive. Utricle and saccule initially have Calb2-positive HCs and later develop Calb1-positive HCs in the striola region. Inner hair cells (IHCs) and outer hair cells (OHCs) in the cochlea express Calb2 early on. Calb1 expression in OHCs overlaps with Cal

The afferent input to the magnocellular division of the mediodorsal thalamic nucleus in the monkey, Macaca fascicularis.

The origin and termination of fibers to the mediodorsal thalamic nucleus, especially those to the medial, magnocellular part of the nucleus (MDm), have been studied using anterograde and retrograde axonal tracing methods, as well as electrophysiological recording. The results indicate that in addition to its well-known connections to and from the prefrontal cortex, MDm receives fibers from many parts of the basal forebrain, including the ventral pallidum and other parts of the substantia innominata, the amygdaloid complex, the primary olfactory cortex, entorhinal and perirhinal cortex, and the

Distribution of acetylcholine and catecholamine neurons in the cat brainstem: a choline acetyltransferase and tyrosine hydroxylase immunohistochemical study.

The distribution of acetylcholine neurons in the brainstem of the cat was studied by choline acetyltransferase (ChAT) immunohistochemistry and compared to that of catecholamine neurons examined in the same or adjacent sections by tyrosine hydroxylase (TH) immunohistochemistry. The largest group of ChAT-positive (+) neurons was located in the lateral pontomesencephalic tegmentum within the pedunculopontine tegmental nucleus and the laterodorsal tegmental nucleus rostrally and within the parabrachial nuclei and locus coeruleus nucleus more caudally. TH+ neurons were found to be coextensive and i

Familial cerebellar ataxia with hydrocephalus in bull mastiffs.

A family of bull mastiff pups in which 16 animals developed certain neurological signs is described. It is probable that the disease is inherited in an autosomal recessive manner. Clinical and pathological examination of six animals revealed ataxia, behavioural abnormalities and a visual defect associated with symmetrical lesions in the cerebellar nuclei, lateral vestibular nucleus and inferior colliculus together with a communicating hydrocephalus. The cerebellar lesions consisted of vacuolation, gliosis and axonal degeneration. Evidence for both axonal and oligodendroglial abnormalities was

[Trigeminal Herpes Zoster Presenting with High-intensity Signals for the Spinal Trigeminal Nucleus and Tract on Diffusion-weighted Image: A Case Report of Stroke Mimic].

A 50-year-old woman was admitted to our hospital with dysesthesia on the right upper portion of her face and a headache. Diffusion-weighted brain magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) revealed high-intensity signals in the dorsolateral portion of the medulla oblongata. She was diagnosed with lateral medullary infarction and was intravenously treated with sodium ozagrel. On the second day of hospitalization, she had nausea and vomiting and showed nystagmus to all directions, suggesting damage to the vestibular nucleus. These manifestations coincided with partial symptoms of lateral medullary syndrom

Auditory brainstem implants: surgical aspects.

Patients with neurofibromatosis type 2 often develop bilateral life-threatening vestibular schwannoma necessitating tumor removal, which results in deafness. We developed the auditory brainstem implant (ABI) in order to be able to electrically stimulate the cochlear nucleus complex in patients with bilateral cochlear nerve injury from bilateral schwannoma. After tumor removal, the electrode array of the ABI is inserted into the lateral recess of the fourth ventricle and placed over the surface of the ventral and dorsal cochlear nuclei. The ABI is designed to stimulate auditory neural structure

Relative contribution of lateral vestibular neuron and abducens internuclear neuron inputs to the discharge activity of medial rectus motoneurons.

Medial rectus motoneurons mediate nasally directed horizontal eye movements. These motoneurons receive two major excitatory inputs, from the abducens internuclear neurons (ABD Ints) and neurons of the lateral vestibular nucleus whose axons course through the ascending tract of Deiters (ATD). In the present work, we have recorded in the alert chronic cat preparation the discharge activity of these two premotor neurons simultaneously with eye movements, to discern their relative contribution to the firing pattern of medial rectus motoneurons. ABD Int discharge was accurately correlated with eye

Transneuronal pathways to the vestibulocerebellum.

The alpha-herpes virus (pseudorabies, PRV) was used to observe central nervous system (CNS) pathways associated with the vestibulocerebellar system. Retrograde transneuronal migration of alpha-herpes virions from specific lobules of the gerbil and rat vestibulo-cerebellar cortex was detected immunohistochemically. Using a time series analysis, progression of infection along polyneuronal cerebellar afferent pathways was examined. Pressure injections of > 20 nanoliters of a 10(8) plaque forming units (pfu) per ml solution of virus were sufficient to initiate an infectious locus which resulted in

A novel black-hooded mutant rat (ci3) with spontaneous circling behavior but normal auditory and vestibular functions.

Abnormal circling behavior in rodents is usually attributed to vestibular dysfunction. In rats, all circling mutants described previously have inner ear defects resulting in auditory and vestibular dysfunctions. Here, we describe a new mutant rat with abnormal spontaneous circling behavior but normal auditory and vestibular functions. The new circling mutant rat was discovered in progeny of an apparently normal black-hooded (BH) rat inbred line [BH.7A(LEW)/Won] and was termed ci3, because we recently found two other mutant circling rats (ci1 and ci2) in a Lewis (LEW) inbred rat strain. The ci3

[Morphological changes in the vestibular analyzer in the dynamics of an experimental disorder of the cerebral circulation].

The alterations of microcirculatory structures and of neurons as a result of chronic cerebrovascular disturbances induced by ligation of the left common carotid artery were studied on 56 noninbred white male rats. The objects of investigation were central links of vestibular analyser such as anterior vestibular nucleus, posterior ventro-lateral part of hypothalamus, sensomotor brain cortex. It was established that one-sided ligation of common carotid artery resulted in alterations in vessels of microcirculatory bed, in neurons' bodies, in synapses. These disorders were similar to oxygen-defici
