BACKGROUND: Schwannomas arise from nerve sheaths of cranial, peripheral, and spinal nerve or nerve roots. Most intracranial schwannomas arise from the cranial nerves, predominantly the vestibulocochlear nerve. In addition to cranial nerve schwannomas, intraparenchymal schwannomas of the brain and intramedullary schwannomas of the spinal cord are extremely rare.
CASE REPORT: In our case we describe the imaging findings of three diverse cases of schwannoma at different locations and unique presentations with acute neurological symptoms in the pediatric age group.
CONCLUSION: Schwannomas should

Neurologic complications occur in 5% of patients with sarcoidosis. Neurosarcoidosis ranges from mild neurologic deficits to a destructive, life-threatening disease, and at times is the only presenting symptom of sarcoidosis, thus posing a diagnostic challenge for the doctor neurologic symptoms include cranial nerve palsies, with the vestibulocochlear nerve rarely being involved. We present a patient with neurosarcoidosis manifesting as recurrent episodes of aseptic meningitis, vertigo, and acute hearing loss.

Vestibular paroxysmia (VP) is a neurological disorder characterised by sudden-onset, recurrent, short-term episodes of vertigo and imbalance, often resulting from neurovascular conflict between a vascular loop and the vestibulocochlear nerve (VIII-cranial nerve). We present four cases of VP, highlighting the clinical presentation, diagnostic workup including magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), and medical management. Case 1: A 40-year-old female; MRI of the brain and internal auditory canal showed a loop of the anterior inferior cerebellar artery (AICA) coursing between the facial and vestibuloc

Hepatitis C is frequently accompanied by immune-related extrahepatic manifestations affecting the skin, kidneys, central and peripheral nervous system and exocrine glands. We present the case of a 40-year-old man with left-sided ptosis, exophthalmos and headache. MRI demonstrated left-sided orbital pseudotumor with lacrimal and retro-orbital contrast enhancement extending to the cavernous sinus and the vestibulocochlear nerve. Immunological tests of serum and cerebrospinal fluid identified hepatitis C virus (HCV) as a potential causative agent but did not indicate any additional infectious, ma

The temporal bone has a highly complex anatomical structure, in which the sensory organs of the cochlea and the vestibular system are contained within a small space together with the sound-conducting system of the middle ear. Detailed imaging is thus required in this anatomical area. There are a great many clinical aims for which the highest-possible spatial resolution is required. These include the localization of cerebrospinal fluid fistulas, the detection of malformations of the middle and inner ear and the vestibulocochlear nerve, an aberrant course of the facial nerve and anomalies of the

Ramsay Hunt syndrome is characterized by varicella zoster virus infection affecting the geniculate ganglion of the facial nerve. It typically presents with vesicles in the external auditory canal associated with auricular pain and peripheral facial nerve paralysis. Although vestibulocochlear nerve is frequently co-involved during the course of Ramsay Hunt syndrome, multiple lower cranial nerve involvement has rarely been described in the literature. In addition, laryngitis due to varicella zoster virus is a diagnostic challenge due to its unfamiliarity among clinicians. We report a case of Ram

The lower cranial nerves receive their arterial supply from an intricate network of tributaries derived from the external carotid, internal carotid, and vertebrobasilar territories. A contemporary, comprehensive literature review of the vascular supply of the lower cranial nerves was performed. The vascular supply to the trigeminal, facial, vestibulocochlear, glossopharyngeal, vagus, spinal accessory, and hypoglossal nerves are illustrated with a special emphasis on clinical issues. Frequently the external carotid, internal carotid, and vertebrobasilar territories all contribute to the vascula

Choristomas, masses of normal tissues in aberrant locations, contain smooth muscle fibers and fibrous tissues. We describe the MR imaging features of two choristomas located in the internal auditory canals and arising from the facial and vestibulocochlear nerves. Both lesions enhanced with contrast material. In one case, enhancement was seen in the geniculate ganglion and greater superficial petrosal nerve. In the other, a medial component enhanced less than the lateral component did.

An 11-y-old hembra alpaca was admitted because of cerebellar and vestibular signs, dysphagia, and aspiration pneumonia; without clinical improvement following empirical therapy, the patient was euthanized. On autopsy, a neoplasm was found incorporating the right vestibulocochlear nerve at the level of the acoustic meatus. Histologically, the mass was composed of a multiphasic primitive cell population associated with a dense fibrous stroma and enveloping a remnant ganglion and nerve bundles. Patterns included dense ribbons and cords of embryonal neuroepithelial cells admixed with loosely defin

BACKGROUND Duplicated internal auditory canal (dIAC) is a rare congenital temporal bone anomaly associated with ipsilateral sensorineural hearing loss (SNHL). The Bonebridge bone conduction implant has a magnet, an internal transducer, and an external audio processor. This report is of a 14-year-old girl with unilateral SNHL and vestibulocochlear nerve (VIII cranial nerve) aplasia due to dIAC who was treated with a Bonebridge bone conduction implant. CASE REPORT A 14-year-old girl was diagnosed with unilateral hearing loss during a school health check. Her hearing screening at birth was normal

For more than 230 years, anatomical illustrations have faithfully reproduced the German medical student Thomas Soemmerring's cranial nerve (CN) arrangement. Virtually all contemporary atlases show the abducens, facial, and vestibulocochlear nerves (CNs VI-VIII) all emerging from the pontomedullary groove, as originally depicted by Soemmerring in 1778. Direct observation at microsurgery of the cerebellopontine angle reveals that CN VII emerges caudal to the CN VIII root from the lower lateral pons rather than the pontomedullary groove. Additionally, the CN VI root lies in the pontomedullary gro

OBJECTIVE Surgical exposure and decompression of the entire trigeminal nerve in a conventional lateral supracerebellar approach can be challenging because of blockages from the superior petrosal vein complex, cerebellum, and vestibulocochlear nerve. The authors demonstrate a novel suprafloccular approach via the petrosal fissure and venous corridors that can be used as a substitute for the conventional route used to treat trigeminal neuralgia and present a consecutive series of patients and their clinical outcomes. METHODS Preoperative and postoperative clinical data from 420 patients who unde

This report describes a patient with sudden sensorineural hearing loss who was found to have a megadolichoectasia vertebrobasilar system that appeared to be causing compression of the ipsilateral facial and vestibulocochlear nerves. The patient was treated conservatively for 4 months, during which time no hearing returned. He then underwent microvascular decompression of the affected nerves. At surgery, marked compression of the cranial nerves VII-VIII complex and the pons was observed. Postoperatively, the patient experienced a gradual return of useful hearing. We suggest that vascular compre

Diagnostic imaging methods are very important for patients with bilateral sensourinoural hearing loss. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is able to demonstrate the vestibulocochlear nerve and facial nerve in the internal acoustic canal. Also computed tomography can be helpful to determination of the deficiency of the cochlear nerve. Cochlear nerve anomalies are classified into three group according to the magnetic resonance imagings. Patients who have cochlear nerve deficiency may not hear with cochlear amplifications. Auditory brain stem implant (ABI) is most suitable for these cases. In this

Typical symptoms of Ramsay Hunt syndrome (RHS) consist of painful vesicular eruptions in the external ear, unilateral facial palsy, and/or vestibulocochlear deficit. When RHS patients show atypical clinical manifestations, correct diagnosis can be delayed, and ideal treatment timing for antiviral therapy may be missed. The aim of this study is to describe RHS patients with atypical clinical manifestations and evaluate the usefulness of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) for early differential diagnosis. We retrospectively reviewed the clinical data and investigated the findings of internal audit
