Avian influenza virus continues to pose zoonotic, epizootic, and pandemic threats worldwide, as exemplified by the 2020-23 epizootics of re-emerging H5 genotype avian influenza viruses among birds and mammals and the fatal jump to humans of emerging A(H3N8) in early 2023. Future influenza pandemic threats are driven by extensive mutations and reassortments of avian influenza viruses rooted in frequent interspecies transmission and genetic mixing and underscore the urgent need for more effective actions. We examine the changing global epidemiology of human infections caused by avian influenza v

Viral hemorrhagic fever (VHF) is defined as virus infections that usually cause pyrexia and hemorrhagic symptoms with multiple organ failure. VHF includes following viral infections: Ebola hemorrhagic fever (EHF), Marburg hemorrhagic fever (MHF), Crimean-Congo hemorrhagic fever (CCHF) and Lassa fever. In particular, the causative agents of EHF, MHF, CCHF, and Lassa fever are Ebola, Marburg, CCHF, Lassa viruses, respectively, and regarded as biosafety level-4 pathogens because of their high virulence to humans. Recently, relatively large outbreaks of EHF and MHF have occurred in Africa, and are

Viral hemorrhagic fevers (VHFs) typically manifest as rapidly progressing acute febrile syndromes with profound hemorrhagic manifestations and very high fatality rates. Lassa fever, an acute hemorrhagic fever characterized by fever, muscle aches, sore throat, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea and chest and abdominal pain. Rodents are important reservoirs of rodent-borne zoonosis worldwide. Transmission rodents to humans occur by aerosol spread, either from the genus Mastomys rodents' excreta (multimammate rat) or through the close contact with infected patients (nosocomial infection). Marine mammals evoke strong public affection as well as considerable scientific interest. However, the resultant close contact with marine wildlife poses human health risks, including traumatic injury and zoonotic disease transmission. The majority of zoonotic marine mammal diseases result in localized skin infections in man that resolve spontaneously or with appropriate medical therapy. However, other marine mammal zoonoses, if left untreated, induce life-threatening systemic diseases that could pose public health risks. As the number of zoonotic diseases rises, the diagnosis of and treatment

Many emerging zoonotic viruses pose major risks to animal and human health, with most recent epidemics of viral origin. This review focuses on encephalomyocarditis virus (EMCV), a member of the Picornaviridae family and the Cardiovirus genus with significant but largely underrecognized zoonotic potential. While EMCV has not yet caused major public health crises, its broad host range and rodent reservoir suggest a wider ecological impact. It is typically detected only during high-fatality outbreaks, particularly in domestic animals and non-human primates (NHPs), which are among the most vulnera

Marburg Virus (MARV), along with the Ebola virus, belongs to the family of Filovirus and is cause of a lethal and severely affecting hemorrhagic fever. The Marburgvirus genus includes two viruses: MARV and Ravn. MARV has been recognized as one of utmost importance by the World Health Organization (WHO). The case fatality rate of the virus ranges from 24.0 to 88.0% which demonstrates its lethal nature and the need for its widespread information. The first case of the Marburgvirus disease (MARD) was reported in 1967 when lab personnel working with African green monkeys got infected in Germany an

This review presents an overview of the most important rodent-borne hemorrhagic fever pathogens directly transmitted from rodents to humans, namely Leptospira and hantaviruses, together with the New- and Old-World arenaviruses. These zoonotic diseases frequently share clinical symptoms, transmission routes and other epidemiological features and often have an emerging pattern. Differential diagnostics could benefit from a syndrome-based approach grouping these pathogens. In this review extensive descriptions of the epidemiology, clinical symptoms, diagnostics and treatment are provided includin

There have been rapid developments in safe and effective mRNA vaccines for zoonotic infections in the past year. Years of research have made these advances possible, leading to in vitro-transcribed (IVT) mRNA expressing therapeutic proteins. There are several advantages of mRNA vaccines that include their low-cost manufacturing process, large-scale and rapid production, and the ability to modify the vaccines in response to emerging infections and viral variants. The COVID-19 pandemic and successful vaccination programs for SARS-CoV-2 have highlighted the advantages of mRNA vaccines. Also, mRNA

INTRODUCTION: Population factors such as urbanization, socio-economic, and environmental factors are driving forces for emerging/re-emerging zoonotic diseases in Cameroon. To inform preparedness and prioritization efforts, this study mapped out epidemiological data (including prevalence) of zoonotic diseases occurring in Cameroon between 2000 and 2022 by demographic factors.
METHODS: Following the PRISMA guidelines, a protocol was registered in the PROSPERO database (CRD42022333059). Independent reviewers searched the PubMed, Embase, CINAHL, Cochrane, and Scopus databases on May 30, 2022 for

Emerging zoonotic viruses pose a global health threat. In Thailand, evaluating human-wildlife interfaces is critical for identifying potential zoonotic virus spillover, particularly in areas with high-risk contact with roosting bats. We conducted cross-sectional sampling of humans (n = 234) and bats (n = 272) at a cave site in central Thailand where guano farmers, national park workers, and cave visitors may be exposed to bat-borne viruses. Molecular and multiplex serologic methods were used to identify current and previous infections with zoonotic paramyxoviruses and filoviruses, while multiv

BACKGROUND: Anthropogenic land conversion and population encroachment into wildlife habitats are amplifying zoonotic risks through intensified human-livestock-wildlife contacts. As ecologically resilient rodents exhibiting dynamic population fluxes, long-tailed marmots (Marmota caudata) are crucial viral reservoirs in Central Asian ecosystems. Their sympatric coexistence with domestic herds creates sustained spillover risks, yet comprehensive virome characterization remains limited. This study employs a whole-virome profiling strategy to comprehensively characterize the viral diversity of 101

Type I interferons (IFN-Is) are critical antiviral cytokines that restrict viral replication and limit viral disease. A remarkable recent discovery is that human autoantibodies (autoAbs) neutralizing the activities of IFN-Is phenocopy inborn errors of immunity and markedly exacerbate susceptibility to life-threatening infections. Development of these pathogenic autoAbs in humans is strongly linked to genetic and nongenetic factors affecting thymic function, and they are estimated to be present in >100 million people worldwide with a prevalence that increases with age. Here, we review major adv

Orthohantavirus puumalaense causes hemorrhagic fever with renal syndrome in Europe, with Puumala virus (PUUV) as its primary representative. Muju virus (MUJV), harbored by Craseomys regulus, an Arvicolinae rodent species endemic to the Republic of Korea (ROK), is also a genotype of O. puumalaense. However, their genomic diversity and zoonotic potential remain largely unknown. To investigate their prevalence, 185 voles were collected from 23 regions of the ROK between 2012 and 2023. Serological assays detected anti-PUUV immunoglobulin G antibodies in five samples (3.1%), whereas reverse-transcr

The occurrence of viral zoonotic spillover (the transmission of viruses from animals to humans) has attracted worldwide attention due to mounting concerns regarding viral threats such as avian influenza, Hendra, monkeypox, Nipah and bat coronaviruses. It is evident that these events deviate significantly from natural occurrences, being the conflation of ecological, environmental and social factors that are profoundly altering the boundaries between the animal and human domains. Consequently, in order to comprehend both the contemporary and prospective drivers of zoonotic viral spillover, a coo

Alarms periodically emerge for viral pneumonia infections due to coronavirus. In all cases, these are zoonoses passing the barrier between species and infect humans. The legitimate concern of the international community is due to the fact that the new identified coronavirus, named SARS-CoV-2 (previously called 2019-nCoV), has a quite high mortality rate, around 2%, and a strong ability to spread, with an estimated reproduction number higher than 2. Even though all countries are doing their utmost to stop the pandemic, the only reliable solution to tackle the infection is the rapid development

BACKGROUND: Minor outbreaks of viral hemorrhagic fever (VHF) with renal failure have occurred in northwestern Greece over past decades. However, during the most recent decade, there has been a paucity of human cases despite the detection of hantavirus in rodents of this area.
CASE REPORTS: We present herein the cases of two patients with VHF, arising in the same area, hospitalized for a short period of time. One patient presented with renal failure, while severe hepatic involvement was predominant in the other. Significantly high ELISA antibody titers for hantavirus established the diagnosis.

Lessons learnt from the COVID-19 pandemic include increased awareness of the potential for zoonoses and emerging infectious diseases that can adversely affect human health. Although emergent viruses are currently in the spotlight, we must not forget the ongoing toll of morbidity and mortality owing to antimicrobial resistance in bacterial pathogens and to vector-borne, foodborne and waterborne diseases. Population growth, planetary change, international travel and medical tourism all contribute to the increasing frequency of infectious disease outbreaks. Surveillance is therefore of crucial im

Wild boar populations around the world have increased dramatically over past decades. Climate change, generating milder winters with less snow, may affect their spread into northern regions. Wild boars can serve as reservoirs for a number of bacteria, viruses, and parasites, which are transmissible to humans and domestic animals through direct interaction with wild boars, through contaminated food or indirectly through contaminated environment. Disease transmission between wild boars, domestic animals, and humans is an increasing threat to human and animal health, especially in areas with high

Climate change and biodiversity loss are global environmental crises driving emerging infectious diseases, including bat-borne pathogens of public health significance: Ebola, Marburg, Nipah, Hendra, classic rabies virus, and Australian bat lyssavirus, as well as the fungus Histoplasma This review presents the evidence on the mechanisms of transmission, impact, and prevention and management strategies relevant to each of these pathogens. Transmission pathways vary between pathogens but often involve exposure to body fluids or excreta of a bat or other infected animal or human. The diseases asso
