Vertigo in virtual reality with haptics: case report.

A researcher was working with a desktop virtual environment system. The system was displaying vector fields of a cyclonic weather system, and the system incorporated a haptic display of the forces in the cyclonic field. As the subject viewed the rotating cyclone field, they would move a handle "through" the representation of the moving winds and "feel" the forces buffeting the handle as it moved. Stopping after using the system for about 10 min, the user experienced an immediate sensation of postural instability for several minutes. Several hours later, there was the onset of vertigo with head

Redefining therapeutic success with virtual reality exposure therapy.

The success rate for treating phobias with in vivo exposure is high. Unfortunately, few phobics (less than 15-20%) ever seek treatment. Virtual reality (VR) exposure therapy is also proving to be highly effective. The present surveys assessed 162 students high in fear of spiders. In Study 1, when asked to choose between multisession in vivo exposure vs. multisession VR exposure therapy, 81% chose VR. In Study 2, comparing one-session in vivo versus multisession VR exposure therapy, 89% chose VR. Results suggest that VR exposure therapy may prove valuable for increasing the number of phobics wh

Building a virtual reality temporal bone dissection simulator.

The temporal bone is one of seven bones that comprise the human skull, and has an intimate relationship with many vital structures. Anatomically, its three-dimensional relationships make it one of the most challenging areas for surgeons to understand and master. In addition, the temporal bone contains minute structures that are among the most sophisticated and delicate in the human body. These structures include the cochlea and vestibular organs, which are responsible for hearing and balance; the middle ear, including the ossicles, which conduct acoustic energy to the cochlea; and the facial n

Vestibular telemedicine and rehabilitation. Applications for virtual reality.

This paper will discuss the use of Virtual Reality (VR) technologies in the rehabilitation of patients with vestibular disorders and in the provision of remote medical consultations for those patients. Patients with a vestibular problem are very common (vertigo is the second most common neurological complaint after headache) and yet there are very few vestibular neurotologists: specialists in their diagnosis and treatment. New treatments for various disorders causing vertigo now exist. This means that appropriate diagnosis can significantly improve patients' well-being. Remote medical diagnosi

A virtual reality environment for enhanced oral implantology.

The quality of clinical decision making is limited by the performance of human cognitive processing of complex visual information. In the field of oral implantology, treatment planning is still based on the holistic interpretation and mental reconstruction of cross sectional 2d-image data. This surpasses widely human cognitive competence and hampers treatment planning in three dimensions that are essential in implantology. To overcome these problems, a virtual reality environment for enhanced treatment planning in oral implantology is presented, which provides a fully three-dimensional percept

Situated Brushing and Linking in Virtual and Augmented Reality.

In traditional visual analysis, brushing and linking is commonly used to visually connect multiple views using highlighting techniques. However, brushing and linking has rarely been used in situated analytics, which uses visualizations to analyze data in the context of physical referents. In situated analytics, data representations must be visually linked to real-world objects. Previous work has assessed situated brushing and linking in a virtual reality simulation of a supermarket scenario. Here, we replicate and extend the previous approach by studying brushing and linking in an actual physi

[The role of virtual reality in first aid education].

With the replacement of predominantly traditional, frontal teaching methods, the aim is to introduce individually paced and experience-based instruction into healthcare simulation training including the theoretical education of first aid. To date, there has been no comprehensive or coordinated national study comparing conventional courses with those conducted in virtual environments. The educational system must adapt to the information acquisition and learning habits of younger generations. Virtual reality may have a significant impact on the individuals' willingness to provide first aid. Lear

[The potentials of virtual reality in pediatric perioperative care].

Each year, millions of children worldwide undergo general anesthesia for various surgical or diagnostic procedures. In Hungary, approximately 20,000 to 30,000 children are treated in pediatric surgical centers annually, and additional 5,000 to 10,000 children undergo operation in adult otolaryngology departments. Treating children is a challenge, as their cognitive and emotional development levels may pose difficulties for them in understanding the procedures ahead and may make the processing of the stressful experiences of the intervention uncertain. Preoperative anxiety can often lead to inc

Virtual Reality in Biomedical Education in the sense of the 3Rs.

Article 23(2) of EU Directive 2010/63 on the protection of animals used for scientific purposes requires staff involved in the care and use of animals to be adequately educated and trained before carrying out procedures. Therefore, the 3Rs (refinement, reduction, and replacement) and knowledge of alternative methods should be part of the education and training itself. For this purpose, the digital learning concept "Virtual Reality (VR) in Biomedical Education" evolved, which successfully combines VR components with classical learning content. Procedures, such as anesthesia induction, substance

Assessment of threat and negativity bias in virtual reality.

Negativity bias, i.e., tendency to respond strongly to negative stimuli, can be captured via behavioural and psychophysiological responses to potential threat. A virtual environment (VE) was created at room-scale wherein participants traversed a grid of ice blocks placed 200 m above the ground. Threat was manipulated by increasing the probability of encountering ice blocks that disintegrated and led to a virtual fall. Participants interacted with the ice blocks via sensors placed on their feet. Thirty-four people were recruited for the study, who were divided into High (HN) and Low (LN) Neurot

The use of virtual reality in acrophobia research and treatment.

Acrophobia, or fear of heights, is a widespread and debilitating anxiety disorder affecting perhaps 1 in 20 adults. Virtual reality (VR) technology has been used in the psychological treatment of acrophobia since 1995, and has come to dominate the treatment of numerous anxiety disorders. It is now known that virtual reality exposure therapy (VRET) regimens are highly effective for acrophobia treatment. This paper reviews current theoretical understanding of acrophobia as well as the evolution of its common treatments from the traditional exposure therapies to the most recent virtually guided o

The role of presence in virtual reality exposure therapy.

A growing body of literature suggests that virtual reality is a successful tool for exposure therapy in the treatment of anxiety disorders. Virtual reality (VR) researchers posit the construct of presence, defined as the interpretation of an artificial stimulus as if it were real, to be a presumed factor that enables anxiety to be felt during virtual reality exposure therapy (VRE). However, a handful of empirical studies on the relation between presence and anxiety in VRE have yielded mixed findings. The current study tested the following hypotheses about the relation between presence and anxi

Effects of immersion in virtual reality on postural control.

In the present study, we examined the effects of the time lag between visual scene and the head movement in the virtual reality (VR) world on motion sickness and postural control in healthy volunteers. After immersion in VR with additional time lags (from 0 to 0.8 s) to the inherent delay (about 250 ms), the visual-vestibular conflict induced a slight motion sickness in experimental subjects, but no change was noticed in the body sway path with eyes open and closed. However, Romberg ratio of body sway path with eyes closed divided by that with eyes open after immersion in VR was significantly

Neurofeedback training with virtual reality for inattention and impulsiveness.

In this research, the effectiveness of neurofeedback, along with virtual reality (VR), in reducing the level of inattention and impulsiveness was investigated. Twenty-eight male participants, aged 14-18, with social problems, took part in this study. They were separated into three groups: a control group, a VR group, and a non-VR group. The VR and non-VR groups underwent eight sessions of neurofeedback training over 2 weeks, while the control group just waited during the same period. The VR group used a head-mounted display (HMD) and a head tracker, which let them look around the virtual world

An experiment on fear of public speaking in virtual reality.

Can virtual reality exposure therapy be used to treat people with social phobia? To answer this question it is vital to known if people will respond to virtual humans (avatars) in a virtual social setting in the same way they would to real humans. If someone is extremely anxious with real people, will they also be anxious when faced with simulated people, despite knowing that the avatars are computer generated? In [17] we described a small pilot study that placed 10 people before a virtual audience. The purpose was to assess the extent to which social anxiety, specifically fear of public speak

Virtual reality and augmented reality in radiation oncology education - A review and expert commentary.

The field of radiation oncology is rapidly advancing through technological and biomedical innovation backed by robust research evidence. However, cancer professionals are notoriously time-poor, meaning there is a need for high quality, accessible and tailored oncologic education programs. While traditional teaching methods including lectures and other in-person delivery formats remain important, digital learning (DL) has provided additional teaching options that can be delivered flexibly and on-demand from anywhere in the world. While evidence of this digital migration has been evident for som
