Living arrangements, loneliness, and social support of low-vision older clients.

1. Loneliness has been linked to both psychological and medical problems. The study of loneliness and social support should interest nurses because nursing interventions may assist in preventing or alleviating potential health problems. 2. Study results indicate that low-vision older clients who lived alone were no lonelier than those who lived with others. Clients who lived alone were as satisfied with their social networks as those who lived with others. The actual number of supporters in the social network had no effect on loneliness for either group. 3. Neither group was particularly lonel

Head and Eye Control in Persons with Low Vision during Urban Navigation.

Low vision involves a range of visual impairments that significantly impact daily activities, particularly navigation in urban environments. Individuals with low vision often develop adaptive strategies to compensate for visual deficits, relying on head movements to bring objects into their remaining functional field of vision. Research suggests that they focus on road surface markings and building edges to aid in wayfinding and collision avoidance. However, urban navigation presents additional challenges, as obstacles, moving hazards, and tripping dangers may enter their visual loss field, in

Training AI to Recognize Objects of Interest to the Blind and Low Vision Community.

Recent object detection models show promising advances in their architecture and performance, expanding potential applications for the benefit of persons with blindness or low vision (pBLV). However, object detection models are usually trained on generic data rather than datasets that focus on the needs of pBLV. Hence, for applications that locate objects of interest to pBLV, object detection models need to be trained specifically for this purpose. Informed by prior interviews, questionnaires, and Microsoft's ORBIT research, we identified thirty-five objects pertinent to pBLV. We employed this

Specificity and retention of visual perceptual learning in young children with low vision.

There is evidence that a pen-and-paper training based on perceptual learning principles improves near visual acuity in young children with visual impairment. The aim of the present study is to measure specificity and retention of its training effects during one year. Sixteen visually impaired children aged 4-8 years were divided in two age- and acuity-matched groups: an early (n = 9) and late treatment group (n = 7). Training consisted of 12 sessions (2× per week for 6 weeks). Studied variables were uncrowded and crowded binocular near visual acuity (40 cm), distance visual acuity (3.0 m) and

Low-level laser therapy improves vision in a patient with retinitis pigmentosa.

OBJECTIVE: This case report describes the effects of low-level laser therapy (LLLT) in a single patient with retinitis pigmentosa (RP). BACKGROUND DATA: RP is a heritable disorder of the retina, which eventually leads to blindness. No therapy is currently available. METHODS: LLLT was applied using a continuous wave laser diode (780 nm, 10 mW average output at 292 Hz, 50% pulse modulation). The complete retina of eyes was irradiated through the conjunctiva for 40 sec (0.4 J, 0.333 W/cm2) two times per week for 2 weeks (1.6 J). A 55-year-old male patient with advanced RP was treated and follow

Characteristics of a paediatric low vision population in a private eye hospital in India.

While private hospitals provide an important access point for low vision services for children in urban India, little is known about this service delivery route. A cross sectional survey was done of consecutive records of 220 children presenting at a newly opened paediatric low vision centre in a private eye hospital in Hyderabad. On presentation, 49% of the children were classified as moderately visually impaired, 31% were severely visually impaired and 20% were blind. The four major causes of visual impairment were the hereditary/genetic conditions of congenital glaucoma, hereditary macular

Vision outcome at age 2 years in a low birth weight population.

We assess the prevalence of vision problems in a cohort of low birth weight infants at age 2 years and the relationship of these problems to neonatal brain injury. Data on prenatal and neonatal history and brain injury status were prospectively collected on 721 children weighing 500-2,000 gm at birth enrolled in a multi-center, population-based longitudinal study. Visual acuity was evaluated using the Teller Acuity Card Procedure. Abnormalities of the eye were assessed by a specially trained pediatric nurse practitioner. Failure of the acuity screen occurred in 62 of 699 tested (8.9%). Multipl

Commentary: smooth pursuit eye movements: from low-level to high-level vision.

If an object of great interest moves in our environment, we are able to elicit smooth pursuit eye movements that keep the image of the moving object stationary on our fovea. The processing of visual motion underlying the execution of smooth pursuit eye movements is very similar to the processing underlying the perception of visual motion. During initiation of smooth pursuit, an averaging across all available motion information occurs. Cognitive factors including attention, prediction and learning are able to influence the execution of smooth pursuit. The pursuit target trajectory in space is r

Will my child see me again? Addressing children's vision impairment through surgeries, optical correction, and low vision services in Northern Malawi.

BACKGROUND: Blindness and low vision in children remain significant public health concerns, particularly in low- and middle-income countries. These conditions are often underdiagnosed and undertreated due to limited access to specialized services, spectacles, and assistive devices, posing critical challenges to health equity. The Childhood Blindness and Low Vision Programme (CBLVP) in Northern Malawi, Africa aimed to address these gaps through capacity building, advocacy, improved access to regular eye health and low vision assessments, and the provision of spectacles and low vision devices.
