Comparative analysis of structural modifications induced by monocular retinal inactivation and monocular deprivation in the developing cat lateral geniculate nucleus.

During a critical period of postnatal life, monocular deprivation (MD) by eyelid closure reduces the size of neurons in layers of the dorsal lateral geniculate nucleus (dLGN) connected to the deprived eye and shifts cortical ocular dominance in favor of the non-deprived eye. Temporary inactivation of the non-deprived eye can promote superior recovery from the effects of long-term MD compared to conventional occlusion therapy. In the current study, we assessed the modification of neuron size in the dLGN as a means of measuring the impact of a brief period of monocular inactivation (MI) imposed

Effects of monocular deprivation on the visual fields of squirrel monkeys.

Five squirrel monkeys were monocularly deprived at birth for 3 years. Visual field testing for the deprived eye revealed no responses to visual stimuli at any position, including the monocular segment. These results are similar to those obtained in macaque monkeys after long-term neonatal monocular deprivation and indicate that lack of patterned visual input to an eye during development in primates can produce functional blindness throughout the visual field. Because the monocular segment of the visual field was not spared, binocular competition cannot be the only mechanism underlying this los

Postural stability in primary open angle glaucoma.

BACKGROUND: This study evaluated the visual contribution to postural steadiness in primary open angle glaucoma (POAG), in correlation with the mean deviation (MD) measured through conventional perimetry, and with the Advanced Glaucoma Intervention Study (AGIS) score, which quantifies the extent of losses in the visual field. METHODS: In 35 POAG patients and 21 age-matched normal subjects, the sway of the centre of pressure of the feet, on a firm or foam support, was recorded. The subjects stood on a force-plate with eyes closed, or with one or two eyes open. RESULTS: For all subjects, the sw

Partial Occlusion of a Third Nerve Palsy, a Shortcut through the Swedish Legal Vision Requirements for Driving.

In this report, we present a case of a young woman with a traumatic third nerve palsy. A substantial practical dilemma for her was that according to the Swedish vision requirements for driving she was not allowed to drive due to diplopia within central 30 degrees of gaze. If she occluded the paretic eye to avoid diplopia, she would need to constantly occlude the eye for an adaptation period of six months before she would be allowed to drive with monocular vision. To get by this problem, the eyeglass of the paretic eye was partially occluded. In her case, this eliminated all diplopia within the

The Eyes Wide Shut Illusion.

The new "eyes wide shut" illusion uses a standard enlarging (shaving or makeup) mirror. Close one eye and look at the closed eye in the mirror; the eye should take up most of the mirror. Switch eyes to see the other closed eye. Switch back-and-forth a few times, then open both eyes. You see an open eye. Which eye is it? To find out, close one eye. Whichever you close, that's the eye you see. How can this be possible? The brain is fusing two images of the two eyes! The illusion depends on (a) binocular fusion: The brain combines two images to a single percept; (b) symmetry: Mirrors don't affect

Presbyopic drivers' vision through a convex rear view mirror.

BACKGROUND: Monovision is a commonly used modality for the presbyope who wants to wear contact lenses. If the add for near vision is in the left eye, driving an automobile creates a circumstance whereby the lens wearer cannot obtain a clear image in that eye of distant objects seen in the driver's side outside rear view mirror. METHODS: We have discovered that a stick-on convex mirror eliminates this problem by neutralizing either some or all of the power of the add. RESULTS: The driver wearing an add in the left eye can then obtain a clear image in that eye of objects behind and to the side

Effect of monocular visual loss upon stability of gaze.

Using the eye-coil/magnetic field method, we measured horizontal and vertical movements of both eyes in four patients with monocular loss of vision while they attempted steady, binocular fixation of a visual target. We also measured gaze stability in two normal subjects while they fixed upon a target monocularly, and in one patient with congenital, bilateral blindness. In the patients with monocular visual loss, gaze instability was greater in the blind eye, both vertically and horizontally, compared either with their seeing eye or with nonviewing eyes of control subjects. Gaze instability due

Accommodative response under monocular and binocular conditions as a function of phoria in symptomatic and asymptomatic subjects.

BACKGROUND: The neurological linkage of vergence and accommodation is a factor which can affect accuracy of accommodation, is in turn associated with symptoms of near-related visual discomfort. The purpose of this study was to compare the accommodative response under monocular and binocular conditions in symptomatic and asymptomatic participants with different near phorias. METHODS: Seventy students at Zahedan University of Medical Sciences, Iran (mean age: 21.2 ± 1.7 years; age range: 18 to 25 years) participated. Preference for binocular concordant visual input in early postnatal development remains despite prior monocular deprivation.

Short daily periods of binocular vision, if concordant and continuous, have been shown to outweigh or protect against much longer daily periods of monocular deprivation to allow the development of normal visual acuity in both eyes of kittens. The greater weight placed on binocular visual input could arise because of an inherent bias for binocular input within the visual pathway at all times during development (Binocular model), or else from a more passive process that follows from its match to a highly binocular template at the time mixed daily visual input began (Template model). To distingui

Capture of visual direction in dynamic vergence is reduced with flashed monocular lines.

The visual direction of a continuously presented monocular object is captured by the visual direction of a closely adjacent binocular object, which questions the reliability of nonius lines for measuring vergence. This was shown by Erkelens, C. J., and van Ee, R. (1997a,b) [Capture of the visual direction: An unexpected phenomenon in binocular vision. Vision Research, 37, 1193-1196; Capture of the visual direction of monocular objects by adjacent binocular objects. Targeted reaching with monocular depth information and haptic feedback: Comparing between monocular patients and normally sighted observers.

Monocular blindness impairs visual depth perception, yet patients seldom report difficulties in targeted actions like reaching, walking, or driving. We hypothesized that by utilizing monocular depth information and calibrating actions with haptic feedback, monocular patients can perceive egocentric distance and perform targeted actions. We compared targeted reaching in monocular patients, monocular-viewing, and binocular-viewing normal controls. Sixty observers reached either a far or a near target, calibrating reaches to the near target with accurate or false feedback while leaving reaches to

[Diplopia in monocular aphakia].

In monocular aphakia, diplopia results from disparities between the two retinal images in form, size, outline, luminous intensity and colour. If one wishes to give the best binocular vision possible to a monocular aphake, it is important to recognize the different factors which may give rise to diplopia.

Therapeutic decisions involving disparate clinical outcomes: patient preference survey for treatment of central retinal artery occlusion.

BACKGROUND: Major therapeutic decisions are made by patients with information and guidance provided by their physicians. The values patients place on different outcomes and the risks they are willing to accept are important factors in making these decisions. New beneficial therapies associated with potentially serious complications are now available for some blinding diseases. The authors aim to determine the maximum amount of risk of stroke and death persons would accept to recover vision. METHODS: Standardized survey of adults with normal vision. RESULTS: Thirty-nine percent and 37% of sur

Thyroid disease induced diplopia.

This report describes a patient who was suffering from incomitant vertical diplopia due to Graves' ophthalmopathy. Previous optical treatment was a diffusing lens for the left eye resulting in monocular vision only. We proceeded to measure the amount of diplopia and prescribed a vertical Fresnel prism to be placed on the left spectacle lens to alleviate his diplopia and resolve his mobility problems. The amount of prism was further reduced by five prism dioptres after extraocular muscle surgery.
