Modeling as Visioning: Exploring the Impact of Criminal Justice Reform on Health of Populations with Substance Use Disorders.

UNLABELLED: In the context of historic reckoning with the role of the criminal-legal system as a structural driver of health harms, there is mounting evidence that punitive drug policies have failed to prevent problematic drug use while fueling societal harms. In this explainer article, we discuss how simulation modeling provides a methodological framework to explore the potential outcomes (beneficial and harmful) of various drug policy alternatives, from incremental to radical. We discuss potential simulation modeling opportunities while calling for a more active role of simulation modeling i

An Investigation of Lower Limb Representations Underlying Vision, Touch, and Proprioception in Body Integrity Identity Disorder.

Individuals with Body Integrity Identity Disorder (BIID) have a (non-psychotic) longstanding desire to amputate or paralyze one or more fully-functioning limbs, often the legs. This desire presumably arises from experiencing a mismatch between one's perceived mental image of the body and the physical structural and/or functional boundaries of the body itself. While neuroimaging studies suggest a disturbed body representation network in individuals with BIID, few behavioral studies have looked at the manifestation of this disrupted lower limb representations in this population. Specifically, pe

Thoracoabdominal respiratory disorder induced by cadmium aerosol and analyzed with a new machine vision model in vivo.

Inhalable environmental pollutants induce pulmonary malfunction, which alters thoracoabdominal respiratory conditions. Traditional methods of recording pressure differences or existing machine vision analyses for detecting respiratory abnormalities are not suitable for synchronous thoracic and abdominal respiratory detections. The present study provides a new method that combines a model of thoracoabdominal localization and distribution based on respiratory physiological characteristics and a machine vision analysis on respiratory conditions in mice exposed to aqueous aerosol containing cadmiu

[An exhaustive study of the frequency of vision disorders in children 5-18 years of age at a Lebanese school].

From October 1995 to June 1996, 935 children (439 boys and 496 girls) aged between 5 and 18 years old (mean 11.6 years) were examined in their school in Saida (Lebanon) for visual disorders. All examinations were conducted by the same investigator (MK) and consisted of an evaluation of both external oculomotricity and visual acuity (VA) for far vision only. Sixty-five children were examined twice to check the validity of the results. The children were classified into two groups according to the findings: -Normal: children with VA above 14/20 degrees (the two eyes being equal or differing by le

Urinary environmental chemical concentrations and vitamin D are associated with vision, hearing, and balance disorders in the elderly.

BACKGROUND: Acute exposure to environmental chemicals can result in loss of consciousness and upon recovery neurological symptoms, but little evidence exists in large epidemiological human studies. Hence, it was aimed to determine the relationships between urinary environmental chemicals (including heavy metals, environmental bisphenols, pesticides, arsenic, and phthalates) concentrations and vision, hearing, and balance disorders in a national population-based setting. METHODS: United States National Health and Nutrition Examination Surveys is a national population-based multi-year cross-sec

Intraocular lens exchange for vision-dependent vestibular disorder after cataract surgery: A case report.

PURPOSE: Dissatisfaction after cataract surgery is often attributed to psychosomatic factors when no ophthalmologic abnormalities are detected, and visually induced vestibular dysfunction is rarely considered. We report a rare case in which such dysfunction was identified and successfully treated by restoring the preoperative refractive state through intraocular lens (IOL) exchange. OBSERVATIONS: A 79-year-old woman who had undergone bilateral cataract surgery at another hospital presented with persistent blurred vision, dizziness, and a floating sensation despite good postoperative acuity. Vision science and schizophrenia research: toward a re-view of the disorder. Editors' introduction to special section.

This theme section on vision science and schizophrenia research demonstrates that our understanding of the disorder could be significantly accelerated by a greater adoption of the methods of vision science. In this introduction, we briefly describe what vision science is, how it has advanced our understanding of schizophrenia, and what challenges and opportunities lay ahead regarding schizophrenia research. We then summarize the articles that follow. These include reviews of abnormal form perception (perceptual organization and backward masking) and motion processing, and an article on reduced

Population Dynamic Projections of Near Vision Loss and Refractive Disorders in China and the G20 From 1990 to 2038.

BACKGROUND Near vision loss (NVL) and refractive disorders (RD) are vision impairments that impact quality of life and economic factors globally. Public health planning requires understanding their burdens and predicting trends. MATERIAL AND METHODS Using Global Burden of Disease (GBD) 2021 data, we analyzed age-standardized prevalence rates (ASPR) and disability-adjusted life year rates (ASDR) for China and the G20 from 1990 to 2021. Trends were described using actual and estimated annual percentage changes. Bayesian age-period-cohort modeling predicted disease burden from 2022 to 2038. Decom

Epidemiology of Field of Vision Disorders (eFOVID) study, Western Australia, 1988-2022. Report 1: Data collection and aggregation protocol.

BACKGROUND: Computerised static visual field testing using dedicated machines such as the Humphrey Field Analyzer (HFA) can assess and track changes in visual field sensitivity. The use of retrospective visual field databases is a novel undertaking, with no studies published utilising large scale population-level data. This study phase developed a method to extract HFA data into a large standardised population-based database including point sensitivity data with additional derived variables. METHODS: Retrospective, longitudinal, population study of visual field data from people who attended a

Telemedicine Screening for Eye Disorders in Federally Qualified Health Centers: Relationship to Vision-Targeted Health-Related Quality of Life.

Introduction: Federally Qualified Health Centers (FQHCs) play a crucial role as safety-net primary health care clinics in the United States, serving medically underserved areas and populations. However, eye services are rarely offered at FQHCs. We examined how telemedicine-generated ocular diagnoses impacted vision-targeted health-related quality of life at FQHCs in rural Alabama. Methods: We focused on patients who are at risk for glaucoma. Both visual function and retinal imaging were assessed. The telemedicine vision screening protocol performed by a remote ophthalmologist evaluated eyes fo

Do it the transformer way: A comprehensive review of brain and vision transformers for autism spectrum disorder diagnosis and classification.

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) is a condition observed in children who display abnormal patterns of interaction, behavior, and communication with others. Despite extensive research efforts, the underlying causes of this neurodevelopmental disorder and its biomarkers remain unknown. However, advancements in artificial intelligence and machine learning have improved clinicians' ability to diagnose ASD. This review paper investigates various MRI modalities to identify distinct features that characterize individuals with ASD compared to typical control subjects. The review then moves on to explore
