Connectivity changes underlying neurofeedback training of visual cortex activity.

Neurofeedback based on real-time functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI) is a new approach that allows training of voluntary control over regionally specific brain activity. However, the neural basis of successful neurofeedback learning remains poorly understood. Here, we assessed changes in effective brain connectivity associated with neurofeedback training of visual cortex activity. Using dynamic causal modeling (DCM), we found that training participants to increase visual cortex activity was associated with increased effective connectivity between the visual cortex and the superior par

Functional specialization in rat occipital and temporal visual cortex.

Recent studies have revealed a surprising degree of functional specialization in rodent visual cortex. Anatomically, suggestions have been made about the existence of hierarchical pathways with similarities to the ventral and dorsal pathways in primates. Here we aimed to characterize some important functional properties in part of the supposed "ventral" pathway in rats. We investigated the functional properties along a progression of five visual areas in awake rats, from primary visual cortex (V1) over lateromedial (LM), latero-intermediate (LI), and laterolateral (LL) areas up to the newly fo

The painful muse: migrainous artistic archetypes from visual cortex.

Neurological diseases which constituted traditionally obstacles to artistic creation can, in the case of migraine, be transformed by the artists into a source of inspiration and artistic production. These phenomena represent a chapter of a broader embryonic neurobiology of painting.

Effects of healthy aging on human primary visual cortex.

Aging often results in reduced visual acuity from changes in both the eye and neural circuits [1-4]. In normally aging subjects, primary visual cortex has been shown to have reduced responses to visual stimulation [5]. It is not known, however, to what extent aging affects visual field representations and population receptive sizes in human primary visual cortex. Here we use functional MRI (fMRI) and population receptive field (pRF) modeling [6] to measure angular and eccentric retinotopic representations and population receptive fields in primary visual cortex in healthy aging subjects ages 5

Lipid pathway alterations in Parkinson's disease primary visual cortex.

BACKGROUND: We present a lipidomics analysis of human Parkinson's disease tissues. We have focused on the primary visual cortex, a region that is devoid of pathological changes and Lewy bodies; and two additional regions, the amygdala and anterior cingulate cortex which contain Lewy bodies at different disease stages but do not have as severe degeneration as the substantia nigra. METHODOLOGY/PRINCIPAL FINDINGS: Using liquid chromatography mass spectrometry lipidomics techniques for an initial screen of 200 lipid species, significant changes in 79 sphingolipid, glycerophospholipid and choleste

Functional specialization and dynamic resource allocation in visual cortex.

We studied the spatiotemporal characteristics of cortical activity in early visual areas and the fusiform gyri (FG) by means of magnetoencephalography (MEG). Subjects performed a visual classification task, in which letters and visually similar pseudoletters were presented in different surrounds and under different task demands. The stimuli appeared in a cued half of the visual field (VF). We observed prestimulus effects on amplitudes in V1 and Cuneus relating to VF and task demands, suggesting a combination of active anticipation and specialized routing of activity in visual processing. Implied motion from form in the human visual cortex.

When cartoonists use speed lines--also called motion streaks--to suggest the speed of a stationary object, they use form to imply motion. The goal of this study was to investigate the mechanisms that mediate the percept of implied motion in the human visual cortex. In an adaptation functional imaging paradigm we presented Glass patterns that, just like speed lines, imply motion but do not on average contain coherent motion energy. We found selective adaptation to these patterns in the human motion complex, the lateral occipital complex (LOC), and earlier visual areas. Glass patterns contain bo

Attentional modulation of oscillatory activity in human visual cortex.

The effects of attentional modulation on activity within the human visual cortex were investigated using magnetoencephalography. Chromatic sinusoidal stimuli were used to evoke activity from the occipital cortex, with attention directed either toward or away from the stimulus using a bar-orientation judgment task. For five observers, global magnetic field power was plotted as a function of time from stimulus onset. The major peak of each function occurred at about 120 ms latency and was well modeled by a current dipole near the calcarine sulcus. Independent component analysis (ICA) on the non-

Excitatory-inhibitory network in the visual cortex: psychophysical evidence.

At early stages in visual processing cells respond to local stimuli with specific features such as orientation and spatial frequency. Although the receptive fields of these cells have been thought to be local and independent, recent physiological and psychophysical evidence has accumulated, indicating that the cells participate in a rich network of local connections. Thus, these local processing units can integrate information over much larger parts of the visual field; the pattern of their response to a stimulus apparently depends on the context presented. To explore the pattern of lateral in

[Disorders of the afferent visual pathway in HIV infection. 1. Optic nerve and 2. Visual pathways/visual cortex].

Up to now little involvement of the afferent visual pathway (optic nerve and optic radiation and visual cortex) in HIV infection has been apparent. These results are based on our prospective investigations of 538 HIV-infected individuals, among them 261 patients with full-blown AIDS carried out by the same examiner over a 6-year period (1984-1990). Diseases of the optic nerve were observed in 22/261 (8.4%) of Aids patients but in only 1/227 (0.4%) of patients with earlier stages of HIV infection. Optic neuritis was the most common disease (in 14/261 = 5.4% of Aids patients), for the most part

Foveal pRF properties in the visual cortex depend on the extent of stimulated visual field.

Previous studies demonstrated that alterations in functional MRI derived receptive field (pRF) properties in cortical projection zones of retinal lesions can erroneously be mistaken for cortical large-scale reorganization in response to visual system pathologies. We tested, whether such confounds are also evident in the normal cortical projection zone of the fovea for simulated peripheral visual field defects. We applied fMRI-based visual field mapping of the central visual field at 3 T in eight controls to compare the pRF properties of the central visual field of a reference condition (stimul

Structural and functional changes across the visual cortex of a patient with visual form agnosia.

Loss of shape recognition in visual-form agnosia occurs without equivalent losses in the use of vision to guide actions, providing support for the hypothesis of two visual systems (for "perception" and "action"). The human individual DF received a toxic exposure to carbon monoxide some years ago, which resulted in a persisting visual-form agnosia that has been extensively characterized at the behavioral level. We conducted a detailed high-resolution MRI study of DF's cortex, combining structural and functional measurements. We present the first accurate quantification of the changes in thickne

Visual-Semantic Tuning across the Cortex Shifts between Tasks.

Attention is a powerful mechanism that dynamically optimizes brain representations to prioritize behaviorally relevant information. While previous studies focusing on single tasks have demonstrated that attention shifts tuning toward attended targets, real-world behavior often requires humans to switch between tasks with different demands. How does visual-semantic tuning in the human brain shift to support the behavioral demands of different naturalistic tasks? To investigate this question, we used voxelwise encoding models to explore how visual-semantic tuning across the human cerebral cortex

Mesoscale developmental rivalry in the human extrastriate visual cortex.

The human extrastriate visual cortex contains fine-scale columns selectively responsive to motion, disparity, and color. However, the developmental interplay between these functional modules remains poorly understood. Using high-resolution functional MRI, we compared the mesoscale organization of the extrastriate cortex in 16 individuals with normal vision and 15 participants with amblyopia (PwA) caused by strabismus (n = 8) or anisometropia (n = 7). In controls, the cortical territory occupied by disparity-selective columns exhibited a competitive relationship with that of motion- and color-s

Modeling neural contrast sensitivity functions in human visual cortex.

The contrast sensitivity function (CSF) characterizes visual function, and iswidely used in research on visual perception and ophthalmological disorders. TheCSF describes the lowest contrast level that participants can perceive as afunction of spatial frequency. Here, we present a new method to estimate theneural equivalent of the CSF that describes how a population of neurons respondsto contrast as a function of spatial frequency. Using functional magneticresonance imaging (fMRI) at 7 Tesla, we measured neural responses whileparticipants viewed gratings that varied systematically in contrast

Functional Dynamics of Deafferented Early Visual Cortex in Glaucoma.

In advanced retinitis pigmentosa with retinal lesions, the lesion projection zone (LPZ) in the early visual cortex can be driven during visual tasks, while it remains unresponsive during passive viewing. We tested whether this finding translates to advanced glaucoma, a major cause of acquired blindness. During visual stimulation, 3T fMRI scans were acquired for participants with advanced glaucoma (n = 4; age range: 51-72) and compared to two reference groups, i.e., advanced retinitis pigmentosa (n = 3; age range: 46-78) and age-matched healthy controls with simulated defects (n = 7). Columnar processing of border ownership in primate visual cortex.

To understand a visual scene, the brain segregates figures from background by assigning borders to foreground objects. Neurons in primate visual cortex encode which object owns a border (border ownership), but the underlying circuitry is not understood. Here, we used multielectrode probes to record from border ownership-selective units in different layers in macaque visual area V4 to study the laminar organization and timing of border ownership selectivity. We find that border ownership selectivity occurs first in deep layer units, in contrast to spike latency for small stimuli in the classica

Population Dynamics of Early Visual Cortex during Working Memory.

Although the content of working memory (WM) can be decoded from the spatial patterns of brain activity in early visual cortex, how populations encode WM representations remains unclear. Here, we address this limitation by using a model-based approach that reconstructs the feature encoded by population activity measured with fMRI. Using this approach, we could successfully reconstruct the locations of memory-guided saccade goals based on the pattern of activity in visual cortex during a memory delay. We could reconstruct the saccade goal even when we dissociated the visual stimulus from the sac
