PURPOSE/METHODS: Bilateral visual field defects resembling an hourglass could be produced by bilateral lateral geniculate lesions. We recently encountered such deficits in a 37-year-old woman after an episode of central pontine myelinolysis.
RESULTS/CONCLUSIONS: Automated static perimetry demonstrated the congruous visual field defects to involve both halves of the visual field. They were confirmed with kinetic perimetry, and they remained stable for four years. Magnetic resonance imaging demonstrated enhancing lesions characteristic of myelinolysis in each lateral geniculate.

The concept of receptive field (RF) is central to sensory neuroscience. Neuronal RF properties have been substantially studied in animals, while those in humans remain nearly unexplored. Here, we measured neuronal RFs with intracranial local field potentials (LFPs) and spiking activity in human visual cortex (V1/V2/V3). PURPOSE: The use of vigabatrin (VGB) as an antiepileptic drug (AED) has been limited by evidence showing that it causes vigabatrin-attributed visual field loss (VAVFL) in at least 20-40% of patients exposed at school age or later. Visual spatial attention was evaluated in dyslexic and normally reading children by using a flanker task. When an irrelevant distractor is presented adjacent to a target stimulus, interference is observed when the two stimuli are associated with conflicting responses.
