Reaction test for competence in visual pathway lesions.

Performance in the visual environment was evaluated with a central fixation or a search target in 11 positions within 34 degrees on a CRT, superimposed on a landscape. Reaction times were recorded. We examined 24 patients aged 26-83, with lesions of the visual pathways and homonymous visual field defects, and 18 normal subjects aged 23-79. This simple test takes about 1 minute in normal subjects and four or more minutes in neurological patients. The test may be used to quantify saccadic adaptation to disability from homonymous field defects and to monitor the training effects of visual rehabil

[Neuroradiology of the intracranial visual pathway. Part II].

Part 2 mainly presents intrinsic lesions as the most common brain tumors (astrocytoma of all grades, ependymoma), arising in the region of the visual pathway. A second focus is on vascular pathology, not only infarction, but cavernoma and venous malformation in Sturge-Weber syndrome. The third topic deals with inflammatory processes such as multiple sclerosis or sarcoidosis.

A defective visual pathway in children with reading disability.

BACKGROUND: The possibility that reading disability in children is associated with visual problems is in dispute. We sought to test the existence of this association by using electrophysiologic techniques to measure the processing of visual information in the magnicellular and parvicellular visual pathways of the brain. METHODS: Visual evoked potentials were measured with scalp electrodes in children 8 to 11 years old who were normal readers and in those with reading disability. The potentials were measured for targets with low (0.5 cycle per degree of visual angle) and high (4.5 cycles per d

Aspects on the treatment of gliomas of the anterior visual pathway.

Partial excision of the glioma of the anterior visual pathway seemed to have no effect on the vision in 7 patients and had a negative effect in 2. These results support the opinion that no excision should be made in such tumours. However, the course of the disease in one exceptional patient raises doubts about the general validity of this rule. In this case the postulated chiasmal glioma proved to be an exophytic glioma arising in one intracranial optic nerve and compressing the other. Excision of the exophytic portion caused rapid and considerable improvement of vision in both eyes. Direct vi

Weakening of Subcortical and Strengthening of Cortical Visual Pathways Across Early Adolescence.

Mounting evidence suggests that amygdalar nuclei receive visual information via both a well-characterized cortical pathway through the inferior temporal cortex and a subcortical route through the superior colliculus and pulvinar. This subcortical pathway may facilitate rapid responses to salient visual stimuli and could explain phenomena such as blindsight. However, controversies remain about the organization of the subcortical pathway, its role in visual processing, and how the cortical and subcortical pathways mature across development. To address these questions we used longitudinal, minima

Multimodal Analysis of the Visual Pathways in Friedreich's Ataxia Reveals Novel Biomarkers.

BACKGROUND: Optic neuropathy is a near ubiquitous feature of Friedreich's ataxia (FRDA). Previous studies have examined varying aspects of the anterior and posterior visual pathways but none so far have comprehensively evaluated the heterogeneity of degeneration across different areas of the retina, changes to the macula layers and combined these with volumetric MRI studies of the visual cortex and frataxin level. METHODS: We investigated 62 genetically confirmed FRDA patients using an integrated approach as part of an observational cohort study. We included measurement of frataxin protein le

Pathways and disease-causing alterations in visual chromophore production for vertebrate vision.

All that we view of the world begins with an ultrafast cis to trans photoisomerization of the retinylidene chromophore associated with the visual pigments of rod and cone photoreceptors. The continual responsiveness of these photoreceptors is then sustained by regeneration processes that convert the trans-retinoid back to an 11-cis configuration. Recent biochemical and electrophysiological analyses of the retinal G-protein-coupled receptor (RGR) suggest that it could sustain the responsiveness of photoreceptor cells, particularly cones, even under bright light conditions. Thus, two mechanisms

Visual pathways evaluation in Kearns Sayre syndrome: a diffusion tensor imaging study.

PURPOSE: Kearns Sayre syndrome (KSS) is a mitochondrial disorder characterized by development of visual impairment. Electroretinogram (ERG) and visual evoked potentials are not able to provide topographical information of optic damage. The purpose of this study was to explore retrochiasmatic optic pathway alteration in KSS with diffusion tractographic analysis and to compare it with different tracts. METHODS: DTI from 8 KSS subjects (14.7 years) and 10 healthy controls (HC) were acquired on a 3T scanner. Optic radiations (OR), optic tracts (OT), inferior frontooccipital fasciculus (IFOF) and

Resting activity in visual and corticostriatal pathways in Parkinson's disease with hallucinations.

BACKGROUND: Visual hallucinations are an important non-motor complication of Parkinson's disease (PD) and carry a negative prognosis. Their biological basis is uncertain, but may relate to the activity of resting state networks in brain. We therefore aimed to investigate functional activity of brain in patients with visual hallucinations (PDVH) in resting state compared to patients without hallucinations (PDnonVH) and a healthy control group (HC). METHODS: Resting state functional MRI was acquired and the primary analysis compared the amplitude of low-frequency fluctuations (ALFF) across grou

Dorsal rather than ventral visual pathways discriminate freezing status in Parkinson's disease.

BACKGROUND: Although visuospatial deficits have been linked with freezing of gait (FOG) in Parkinson's disease (PD), the specific effects of dorsal and ventral visual pathway dysfunction on FOG is not well understood. METHOD: We assessed visuospatial function in FOG using an angle discrimination test (dorsal visual pathway bias) and overlapping figure test (ventral visual pathway bias), and recorded overall response time, mean fixation duration and dwell time. Covariate analysis was conducted controlling for disease duration, motor severity, contrast sensitivity and attention with Bonferroni

Multiple circuits relaying primate parallel visual pathways to the middle temporal area.

Parallel pathways in the primate visual system parse the sensory signal into magnocellular (M), parvocellular (P), and koniocellular (K) streams. These pathways remain anatomically separate and distinct from their origination in different retinal ganglion cell types, through distinct layers of the lateral geniculate nucleus, and into primary visual cortex (V1), with the M pathway terminating primarily in layer 4Calpha, the P pathway in layer 4Cbeta, and the K pathway in the cytochrome oxidase blobs of layer 2/3. Recent studies indicate that outputs from V1 are less compartmental than previousl

The clinical presentation of children with tumours affecting the anterior visual pathways.

PURPOSE: To review the ways in which children with tumours affecting the anterior visual pathways present and to determine the extent of visual loss at presentation and the visual prognosis after treatment. METHODS: A retrospective review of the 17 children (age 1-13 years at presentation) referred to a specialist paediatric oncology unit. Ten children had extrinsic tumours affecting the chiasmal area whilst 7 had intrinsic gliomas affecting the optic nerve and/or chiasm. Patients were followed up for up to 13 years (median 2 years). RESULTS: The children studied presented with a variety of

MR of uncommon congenital and vascular lesions of the intracranial visual pathways.

The MR findings of two patients with rare congenital abnormalities of the optic pathways are reported and illustrated, including one case of unilateral aplasia of the optic chiasm, tract, and visual radiations and another patient with anophthalmos. In three other patients with unusual vascular causes of visual disturbance, MR was important in early establishment of an accurate diagnosis and had consequent implications for decisions regarding further patient management.

Spread of Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease virus along visual pathways after intraocular inoculation.

We studied the targeting of spongiform lesions within the visual pathways after intraocular injection with the Fujisaki strain of Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (CJD) virus. The first lesions were observed 18 weeks postinoculation in the most superficial layer of the superior colliculus and in the lateral geniculate body contralateral to the side of the inoculation. Asymmetrical lesions in the superior colliculus were found also in mice sacrificed at 19, 22, and 27 weeks postinoculation. These results demonstrate that CJD virus spreads within the CNS via central axons of the visual pathways followi

Abnormal white matter tractography of visual pathways detected by high-angular-resolution diffusion imaging (HARDI) corresponds to visual dysfunction in cortical/cerebral visual impairment.

Cortical (cerebral) visual impairment (CVI) is characterized by visual dysfunction associated with damage to the optic radiations and/or visual cortex. Typically it results from pre- or perinatal hypoxic damage to postchiasmal visual structures and pathways. The neuroanatomical basis of this condition remains poorly understood, particularly with regard to how the resulting maldevelopment of visual processing pathways relates to observations in the clinical setting. We report our investigation of 2 young adults diagnosed with CVI and visual dysfunction characterized by difficulties related to v
