Persistent omphalomesenteric duct and urachus presenting as an umbilical hernia.

Vitellointestinal duct anomalies, although one of the most frequent malformations to be found (2%-3% in population), they are most unlikely to cause symptoms. A persistent Vitellointestinal duct can induce abdominal pain, bowel obstruction, intestinal haemorrhage and umbilical sinus, fistula or hernia which commonly occurs in children. Patent vitellointestinal duct or persistent omphalomesenteric duct is a very unusual congenital anomaly which occurs in 2% of the population related to the embryonic yolk stalk. Similarly, urachal anomalies remain a rare finding, with the most common being a cys

Intestinal obstruction due to congenital bands from vitelline remnants: sonographic features and review of the literature.

An anomalous congenital band is a well-known cause of intestinal obstruction, but it is rare and usually presents a diagnostic challenge. With high-frequency sonography, it is possible for intestinal obstruction due to a vitelline band to be diagnosed preoperatively. We describe the sonographic findings of 2 cases that led us to make the correct diagnosis, which was confirmed by surgery.

A newer surgical approach for patent vitello-intestinal duct anomalies.

A newer, relatively quicker approach has been described for the treatment of patent VID. Its superior advantages over other approaches include better cosmetic results, is technically simpler and can be done using local anesthesia without an appreciable amount of blood loss.

Hernia of the umbilical cord associated with a patent omphalomesenteric duct.

Congenital hernia of the cord is a different type of ventral abdominal wall defect in which the bowel usually herniates into the base of normally inserted umbilical cord through a patent umbilical ring. It is rare congenital anomaly with incidence of 1 in 5000. Although it was described as a distinct entity since 1920s it is often misdiagnosed as a small omphalocele. We present an unusal case of term male newborn with umbilical cord hernia associated with patent omphalomesenteric duct. The diagnose was made after birth despite antenatal ultrasound scans and it is managed successfully with unev

[Comorbid Meckel's diverticulum and omphalomesenteric cyst evaluated by small bowel series under double-balloon enteroscopy: a case report].

A 59-year-old man was referred to our hospital for examination of intermittent abdominal pain. Computed tomography scan showed a cystic lesion adjoining the ileum, and small bowel series demonstrated a small bowel diverticulum. Double-balloon enteroscopy (DBE) revealed a diverticulum in the ileum and a soft and smooth elevated lesion with a small hole at the base of the diverticulum. Small bowel series under DBE demonstrated that the cystic lesion communicated with the diverticulum through the small hole. The diagnosis was Meckel's diverticulum and an omphalomesenteric cyst. This is the first

Congenital hernia of the cord and associated patent omphalomesenteric duct: a frequent neonatal problem?

Six neonates with hernia of the umbilical cord (HUC) and associated patent omphalomesenteric duct (POMD) were treated in our hospital in a 10-year period and are reported in order to emphasize the potential hazard of clamping the bowel at the time of the handling of the umbilicus. Any unusual thickening of the base of the cord along with even the most minute fistula opening to its side should alert the physician to the existence of these combined anomalies. The cord in such patients must be clamped a safe distance away and early pediatric surgical consultation must be contemplated. Obstetricia

Spontaneous regression of patient omphalomesenteric duct: from a fistula to Meckel's diverticulum.

A newborn with a patent omphalomesenteric duct is described in this report. This anomaly is a very rare one. Regression of the omphalomesenteric duct occurs as a normal embryonic event in the intrauterine life between the fifth and ninth week of gestation; however, in this case regression occurred spontaneously in the neonatal period and resulted in a Meckel's diverticulum with no connection with the umbilicus. This is the first case to be reported.

Incidental Finding of a Neuroendocrine Tumor Arising from Meckel Diverticulum During Hernia Repair - A Case Report and Literature Review.

Meckel diverticulum is the most common abnormality of the gastrointestinal tract arising from an incomplete obliteration of the vitelline duct during the intrauterine life. Although tumor development in Meckel diverticulum is not a common situation, it can occur due to the persistence of cellular islets with gastric, pancreatic or intestinal origin. The presence of a neuroendocrine tumor arising from Meckel diverticulum is even scarcer. We present the case of a 59-year-old patient in whom a Meckel diverticulum was found during surgery for inguinal hernia; the histopathological and immunohistoc

Meckel's Diverticulum Causing a Small Bowel Obstruction in an 80-Year-Old Male: Report of a Rare Case and Review of the Literature.

Meckel's diverticulum (MD) is the most common congenital malformation occurring in the gastrointestinal tract and results from the persistence of the vitelline duct during embryology. MD is typically asymptomatic in adults with most of its symptoms manifesting in early childhood. Small bowel obstruction (SBO) due to MD in the elderly population is an entity that has not been widely described in the literature. We present a very rare case of SBO in an 80-year-old patient with no previous abdominal surgeries (virgin abdomen). The cause of obstruction was determined to be an adhesive band formed

Coexistence of a Meckel's diverticulum and a urachal remnant.

Meckel's diverticulum, which is a remnant of the omphalomesenteric or vitelline duct, is the most common congenital abnormality of the gastrointestinal system. Urachal abnormalities, resulting from anomalous urogenital development, are not observed frequently and case reports are mainly represented in literature. The presence of these two congenital anomalies together is a very rare pathology. Complications arising from a Meckel's diverticulum or urachal remnant may clinically mimic acute appendicitis and other surgical pathologies. We report on a patient who underwent surgery for acute append

Identification of an Opisthorchis viverrini-like liver fluke from Myanmar: Metacercariae recovered from snakehead fish and adults from an experimentally infected hamster.

A novel fluke species, morphologically resembling Opisthorchis viverrini, was discovered in the Yangon Region, Myanmar. Metacercariae were found in the muscle tissue of 2 snakehead fish species, Mi<Channa lucius and Channa striata. The metacercariae were elliptical (average 165×122 μm, n=10), having 2 suckers and a large excretory bladder. Experimental infection of a hamster resulted in the recovery of adult flukes from the bile ducts at day 50 post-infection. Adult flukes were lanceolate, with dimensions of 3.8-6.0 (average 5.1) mm by 1.1-1.2 (1.2) mm (n=10). Morphological characteristics inc

Heterotopic Gastric Mucosa in the Ileum: A Rare Cause for Intussusception in Adults.

Intussusception is the leading cause for intestinal obstruction in children. However, it accounts for only 5% of bowel obstructions in adults. Heterotopic gastric mucosa (HGM) can occur anywhere in the gastrointestinal tract; nevertheless, its occurrence in the small intestine is rare unless associated with remnants of vitelline duct (Meckel's diverticulum). Herein, we describe a case of a 33-year-old male who presented with symptoms and signs of intestinal obstruction caused by ileo-colic intussusception, in which polypoid HGM acted as the organic lead point for intussusception. Several cases

Case for Thought: Meckel's Diverticulum in the Adult Population.

Meckel's diverticulum (MD) is a well-known gastrointestinal (GI) congenital anomaly that is generally considered a disorder in neonates or a "clinically silent" disorder in adults. While prevalent in children, MD is not often considered as a differential in the etiology of GI bleeding in the adult population. We describe a case of MD presenting as a copious GI bleed in a 65-year-old male, which was found after numerous diagnostic studies. Our case report aims to challenge the idea that Meckel's diverticulum is solely a neonatal disorder, identify this vitelline duct remnant as a potential caus

Findings of a patent omphalomesenteric duct in children with umbilical cord hernia showing different prognosis.

BACKGROUND: Umbilical cord hernia (UCH) is a rare midline abdominal defect, with the incidence of 1:5,000 live birth. It might be accompanied by other congenital anomalies, including patent omphalomesenteric duct (OMD). Here, we reported two pediatric cases of UCH with the findings of patent OMD and different prognosis. CASE PRESENTATION: We described two cases UCH with patent OMD: the first case, UCH with the incidental findings of patent OMD during the defect closure; while the second case, UCH with the prolapse of patent OMD. Both cases underwent exploratory laparotomy, patent OMD resectio
