Epiretinal membranes: prevalence and associations in relationship to posterior vitreous detachment - the Beijing Eye Study.

PURPOSE: To assess prevalence and associations of epiretinal membranes (ERMs) in a general population. METHODS: In participants of the population-based Beijing Eye Study, we assessed macular volume optical coherence tomographic (OCT) scans for ERMs. RESULTS: The study included 1351 eyes (914 participants) (age: 64.7±9.8 years; range: 50-91 years). ERMs were detected in 80 eyes (5.9%; 95% CI 4.9% to 6.9%) of 60 participants (6.6%; 95% CI 5.1% to 8.1%), with ERMs without retinal surface wrinkling in 34 (2.5%) eyes, ERMs with retinal surface wrinkling and normal fovea contour in 16 (1.2%) eyes,

The baseline vitreous proteome in rhegmatogenous retinal detachment: a case-control study of proliferative vitreoretinopathy.

Proliferative vitreoretinopathy (PVR) is the leading cause of failure after rhegmatogenous retinal detachment (RRD) repair, yet no baseline biomarkers exist to stratify risk. In this retrospective, nested case-control study we asked whether the vitreous proteome at the time of primary RRD repair predicts subsequent PVR. Undiluted vitreous (1.0 mL) was obtained by pars plana vitrectomy from 16 eyes of 16 patients (8 who later developed PVR and 8 matched RRD controls) and analyzed by tandem mass tag (TMT)-multiplexed liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry. Of 918 proteins identified, 876

Posterior Vitreous Detachment and Risk of Neovascular Glaucoma in Eyes with Prior Retinal Vascular Occlusions.

INTRODUCTION: To investigate the impact of posterior vitreous detachment (PVD) on the risk of developing neovascular glaucoma (NVG) in eyes with occlusions of the retinal artery (RAO) or retinal vein (RVO). METHODS: Single-center retrospective case-control study of adults with a history of RVO/RAO. Cases (N = 101) who developed NVG were age and sex matched 1:2 to controls who did not develop NVG (N = 202). Multivariable logistic regression was used to estimate the association between history of PVD and risk of NVG while controlling for other related demographic or clinical factors. RESULTS:

ROLE OF OPTICAL COHERENCE TOMOGRAPHY IN MANAGEMENT OF ACUTE POSTERIOR VITREOUS DETACHMENT AND ITS COMPLICATIONS.

PURPOSE: Currently, no consensus exists on the role of optical coherence tomography (OCT) imaging in the setting of acute posterior vitreous detachment (PVD). The authors outline the clinical utility of OCT in the management of acute PVD and its complications. METHODS: Literature review of OCT findings in association with acute PVD and report of illustrative cases. RESULTS: Optical coherence tomography imaging in the setting of acute PVD can provide details of vitreoretinal interface that are difficult to appreciate on biomicroscopy alone including partial PVDs, focal vitreoretinal adhesions

Relationship of choroidal thickness and axial length with posterior vitreous detachment in patients with high myopia.

Although accumulating evidence suggests a higher prevalence of posterior vitreous detachment (PVD) in highly myopic eyes, the relation between ocular biometric features and PVD stages in such eyes remains unclear. Therefore, we enrolled 170 patients with high myopia (axial length ≥ 26.0 mm) to investigate the status of PVD regarding subfoveal choroidal thickness and axial length. Utilising swept-source optical coherence tomography, we classified the PVD status into five stages. The distribution of PVD grades increased as the choroidal thickness decreased and axial length increased (P < 0.01).

Full-thickness macular hole formation in eyes with a pre-existing complete posterior vitreous detachment.

BACKGROUND: Tangential macular traction by the posterior vitreous cortex has been widely accepted as the major causative factor in the development of idiopathic macular holes. Separation of the posterior cortical vitreous should relieve this vitreoretinal traction. METHODS: The authors report five patients with idiopathic full-thickness macular hole formation that occurred in the presence of a well-documented pre-existing complete posterior vitreous detachment. RESULTS: Of five eyes, three underwent pars plana vitrectomy and instillation of transforming growth factor-beta. No residual prefov

Symptoms related to posterior vitreous detachment and the risk of developing retinal tears: a systematic review.

Flashes and floaters are the hallmark symptoms of a posterior vitreous detachment (PVD) which itself is related to an increased risk of the development of retinal tears, retinal detachment and vitreous haemorrhage. The aim of this study is to assess the associations between different symptoms related to PVD and the risk of developing retinal tears. A systematic review of articles written in English, using MEDLINE, Embase (via Embase.com) and the Cochrane Controlled Trials Register (1996-2017) was conducted. Search terms included five elements: PVD, retinal tears, retinal detachment, floaters a

Risk factors for retinal breaks following surgical induction of posterior vitreous detachment: A scoping review.

Surgical induction of posterior vitreous detachment (IPVD) is a well-known risk factor for retinal breaks (RB) during vitrectomy; however, risk factors for breaks in the subgroup of eyes requiring IPVD are poorly characterised. We summarize and explore existing literature on demographic, clinical, and operative risk factors for RB in eyes that require IPVD. We conducted a comprehensive search of electronic databases (PubMed, Ovid MEDLINE, EMBASE, and Google Scholar) in August, 2024. We included English-language meta-analyses, randomised control trials, and observational studies or series that
