Visual Sensory Cortices Causally Contribute to Auditory Word Recognition Following Sensorimotor-Enriched Vocabulary Training.

Despite a rise in the use of "learning by doing" pedagogical methods in praxis, little is known as to how the brain benefits from these methods. Learning by doing strategies that utilize complementary information ("enrichment") such as gestures have been shown to optimize learning outcomes in several domains including foreign language (L2) training. Here we tested the hypothesis that behavioral benefits of gesture-based enrichment are critically supported by integrity of the biological motion visual cortices (bmSTS). Prior functional neuroimaging work has implicated the visual motion cortices

Predicting expressive vocabulary acquisition in children with intellectual disabilities: a 2-year longitudinal study.

PURPOSE: This study's objectives were to describe expressive vocabulary acquisition in children with intellectual disabilities (ID) and to examine specific pre- and early linguistic behaviors used to request and comment, chronological age, cognitive skills, and vocabulary comprehension as predictors of expressive vocabulary. METHOD: This study included 36 children with ID, age 3;00 (years;months) to 6;05, with an average initial expressive vocabulary of 67 words. Expressive vocabulary acquisition was longitudinally followed over a 2-year period based on 4-monthly administrations of the Dutch

C-VLT: A reliable Chinese Vocabulary Levels Test for primary and secondary school learners.

This study developed the first Chinese Vocabulary Levels Test (C-VLT) designed for native Chinese learners in Grades 1 through 9, utilizing a developmental vocabulary list. The C-VLT comprises four subtests, each matched to different grade levels. Using probability proportional to size sampling, we selected 16 schools from four counties, with a total of 10,460 students participating in the test. Analyses combining classical test theory (CTT) and item response theory (IRT) showed that the test exhibited reasonable difficulty and discrimination, and no items showed differential item functioning

Exploring Vocabulary Growth in African American English-Speaking Toddlers: Bridging Linguistic and Cultural Perspectives.

PURPOSE: This study examined vocabulary growth in low-income African American English (AAE)-speaking toddlers aged 30 and 42 months. Specifically, we investigated whether traditional child-level language production, discourse measures, or maternal language input at Time 1 predicted receptive vocabulary growth at Time 2. METHOD: Language samples were collected from 101 African American toddlers during home-based play interactions with their caregivers at 30 and 42 months. Child and maternal language measures were derived from transcripts using Systematic Analysis of Language Transcripts, and r

COVTrack++: Learning Open-Vocabulary Multi-Object Tracking from Continuous Videos via a Synergistic Paradigm.

Multi-object tracking (MOT) has traditionally focused on a few specific categories, thereby restricting its applicability to real-world scenarios involving diverse objects. Open-vocabulary multi-object tracking (OVMOT) addresses this limitation by enabling tracking of arbitrary categories, including novel objects unseen during training. However, current progress is constrained by two critical challenges: the lack of continuously annotated video data for model training, and the lack of a customized OVMOT framework to synergistically handle the sub-tasks, i.e., detection (including localization

Developing and Validating Accurate Test Scale for Mandarin Vocabulary Comprehension Ability of Preschool Children.

PURPOSE: The purpose of this study is to develop an accurate test scale for vocabulary comprehension ability applicable to Mandarin-speaking preschool children aged 3-5. METHODS: First, an initial scale was developed and evaluated using the expert consultation method. Subsequently, 490 typically developing 3-5-year-old Mandarin-speaking children were selected as subjects through convenience sampling, and individual tests were conducted in the form of 'following instructions to point to target pictures'. A formal scale was formed through item analysis, reliability analysis and validity analysi

Analyzing large text data for vocabulary profiling in corpus-based studies of academic discourse.

This article introduces a protocol designed to analyze large corpora for vocabulary profiling, aimed at enhancing corpus-based studies of academic discourse. Given the complexity and volume of data typical in academic fields, this protocol integrates advanced corpus compilation techniques with lexical analysis tools to effectively identify and categorize vocabulary suitable for academic use. The study details the systematic process of compiling a large corpus of academic texts, and describes the adaptations made to corpus linguistics tools to handle and analyze a corpus with 278 million runnin

Examining Early Vocabulary Growth Trajectories in Late Talkers in a Low-Income Longitudinal Sample.

Studies show children in low-income households have heightened risk of developing as late talkers (LTs). Scholars have attributed the cause of these differences to variability in child-directed and observed language input, parenting quality, attendance at childcare facilities, or some combination therein, as briefly reviewed. However, this study focuses on a sample entirely of families experiencing low income to explore differences within this group. This study explores growth trajectories for child vocabulary production from age 8-30 months in a racially-diverse low-income longitudinal sample

Modeling individual differences in vocabulary development: A large-scale study on Japanese heritage speakers.

This study examines when the vocabulary knowledge of Japanese heritage speakers (HSs; N = 427, Mage = 9.96, female = 213) begins to diverge from monolingual counterparts (N = 136, Mage = 6.69, female = 65) and what factors explain individual differences in HS development. Vocabulary of HSs began to diverge from 5.61 years and this difference lasted until they were young adults. We also administered a fit-for-purpose questionnaire in 2021-2023 and identified six experiential latent factors: Holiday, School, Community, Proficiency, Literacy, and Home. Structural modeling indicates that Holiday p

Spoken Expressive Vocabulary in 2-Year-Old Children with Hearing Loss: A Community Study.

Through a cross-sectional community study of 2044 children aged 2 years, we (1) examine the impact of hearing loss on early spoken expressive vocabulary outcomes and (2) investigate how early intervention-related factors impact expressive vocabulary outcomes in children with hearing loss predominantly identified through universal newborn hearing screening. We used validated parent/caregiver-reported checklists from two longitudinal cohorts (302 children with unilateral or bilateral hearing loss, 1742 children without hearing loss) representing the same population in Victoria, Australia. Anodal tDCS over Broca's area improves fast mapping and explicit encoding of novel vocabulary.

An accumulating body of evidence suggests that transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS) can be used to affect language processing, including word acquisition. There has been, however, no comprehensive study of effects of tDCS of the core language areas in relation to the main word-learning mechanisms. Two principal strategies have been posited as important for natural word acquisition: explicit encoding (EE) which relies on direct instructions and repetition of material, and fast mapping (FM) which operates implicitly, via context-based inference or deduction. We used anodal and cathodal

Within- and Cross-Language Relations Between Phonological Memory, Vocabulary, and Grammar in Bilingual Children.

PURPOSE: This study investigated within-language and between-language associations between phonological memory, vocabulary, and grammar in French-English (n = 43) and Spanish-English (n = 25) bilingual children at 30, 36, and 48 months. It was predicted that phonological memory would display both within-language and between-language relations to language development and that these relations would be stronger at the youngest age. METHOD: Bilingual children participated in free-play sessions in both of their languages at each age, from which vocabulary and grammatical information (number of dif

Systematic CHAAOS: Teaching Vocabulary in English/Language Arts Special Education Classes in Middle School.

In this multi-year study, we taught English/Language Arts teachers of students with learning disabilities in middle school to incorporate 15 min of daily vocabulary activities with students in their intact special education English/Language Arts classes. During Year 1, teachers taught 48 words to their sixth grade students, who learned and retained the words significantly better than the students in business-as-usual (BAU) control classes. In the current study, we report the second year results, as the sixth grade students entered seventh grade. Students (n = 42) in treatment classes again lea

Retrieval, automaticity, vocabulary elaboration, orthography (RAVE-O): a comprehensive, fluency-based reading intervention program.

The most important implication of the double-deficit hypothesis (Wolf & Bowers, in this issue) concerns a new emphasis on fluency and automaticity in intervention for children with developmental reading disabilities. The RAVE-O (Retrieval, Automaticity, Vocabulary Elaboration, Orthography) program is an experimental, fluency-based approach to reading intervention that is designed to accompany a phonological analysis program. In an effort to address multiple possible sources of dysfluency in readers with disabilities, the program involves comprehensive emphases both on fluency in word attack, w

A Systematic Review and Meta-Analysis of Vocabulary Interventions for Deaf/Hard of Hearing Children and Adolescents.

PURPOSE: The development of vocabulary size in deaf/hard of hearing (DHH) children and adolescents can be delayed compared to their peers due to lack of access to early language input. Complementary vocabulary interventions are reported in the literature. Our aim is to evaluate the effectiveness of intervention methods for their vocabulary improvement. METHOD: Following the Preferred Reporting Items for Systematic Reviews and Meta-Analyses guidelines, we searched five databases for peer-reviewed journal articles in English, published between 2000 and 2022 (inclusive), reporting vocabulary int

The influence of vocabulary age and spatial dimension on rapid picture naming in children with reading disorders.

The present study measured naming reaction times of normal and reading disordered (RD) children to a series of centrally presented picture stimuli of varying vocabulary age and spatial dimension. Results of the ANOVA on reaction times indicated significant interactions of Group x Dimension and Group x Vocabulary. Post hoc tests on the former interaction suggested that the feature of dimension differentially affected naming reaction times for the two groups. The control group produced faster naming reaction times to the three-dimensional pictures, while the reading disordered group was faster i

A findings model for an ambulatory pediatric record: essential data, relational modeling, and vocabulary considerations.

Effective, computer-based representation of clinical observations requires balancing the advantages of structured, coded descriptions against those of free text narrative. An essential data set of relevant signs and symptoms was defined by a multidisciplinary group based on management goals published in a national guideline to meet the needs of clinicians in the Spina Bifida Clinic at Yale-New Haven Hospital. These core data elements are stored in a structured format. Additional material is stored as free text. A relational schema was devised that permits storage of both coded findings and nar

Syllable and rime patterns for teaching reading: Analysis of a frequency-based vocabulary of 17,602 words.

A frequency-based vocabulary of 17,602 words was compiled and analyzed in order to group words with recurring syllable and rime patterns for teaching reading. The role of the rime unit (e.g.,ite inkite andinvite) in determining vowel pronunciation was central to the analysis because of the difficulty that the ambiguity of English vowel spelling presents to children who do not learn to read words easily. Vowel pronunciation in each orthographic rime was examined, both for its consistency in all words in which the rime occurs and for regularity, defined as conformity to the most frequent pronunc

Evolving and contested vocabulary of abortion and miscarriage: inconsistencies across English, Italian, French and German.

The language used to describe the ending of a pregnancy is contested, and the contest has consequences for stigma, recognition and access to care. In English, the late twentieth-century shift from 'spontaneous abortion' to 'miscarriage' is often told as growing compassion. Comparing English with Italian, French and German, I argue that the shift is better understood as the relocation of stigma rather than its removal. English, having no separate everyday word for miscarriage, engineered a shift through deliberate professional reform. French and German did so centuries ago. Italian never develo
