Semantic knowledge fractionations: verbal propositions vs. perceptual input? Evidence from a child with Klinefelter syndrome.

This paper addresses the relative independence of different types of lexical- and factually-based semantic knowledge in JM, a 9-year-old boy with Klinefelter syndrome (KS). JM was matched to typically developing (TD) controls on the basis of chronological age. Lexical-semantic knowledge was investigated for common noun (CN) and mathematical vocabulary items (MV). Factually-based semantic knowledge was investigated for general and number facts. For CN items, JM's lexical stores were of a normal size but the volume of correct 'sensory feature' semantic knowledge he generated within verbal item d

Differences in the literacy skills of Danish dyslexic students in two types of higher education programmes.

Previous research has treated high-functioning dyslexic students as a homogeneous group. This study explores the clinical observation that dyslexic students attending university programmes differ from dyslexic students attending tertiary education professional programmes in some aspects of their literacy skills. Four groups, dyslexic university students (n = 32), dyslexic students attending professional programmes (n = 32), control university students (n = 31), and control students from professional programmes (n = 30), were assessed on measures of pseudoword reading, phonological choice, voca

Voice recognition and aphasia: can computers understand aphasic speech?

PURPOSE: This preliminary investigation of the use of voice recognition software by people with aphasia presents a new method of training the software, which allows the aphasic user to by-pass the linguistically demanding standard training. It examines how accurately voice recognition software performed with aphasic speech and language as compared to that of control subjects. METHOD: Five non-impaired controls and six participants with aphasia used a vocabulary of 50 words and 24 phrases to train the software over a maximum of five sessions. For the people with aphasia baseline assessments pr

The effectiveness of a specifically-designed language intervention protocol on the cochlear implanted children's communication development.

OBJECTIVE: Although various studies have depicted the importance of language intervention programs in facilitating language acquisition in cochlear implanted children, to this date rarely has a specific language intervention approach been recommended as better than the other and no best practice has been introduced in terms of language acquisition outcomes. Thus, the therapists remain uncertain as to which approach to follow and how to apply evidence to practice. Hence, the main goal of this study was to take a step in this regard by comparing the communication development of pediatric cochlea

Conditional Longitudinal Relations of Elementary Literacy Skills to High School Reading Comprehension.

The present study explores the longitudinal development between Grade 3 word level reading skills and higher level semantic skills to Grade 10 reading comprehension for 3,157 students. In particular, this work focused on how the developmental relations varied for subsamples of students who are English learners (EL; N = 308), students identified as specific learning disability (SLD; N = 133), and general education (Gen Ed; N = 2,716) students who have no formal classification or diagnoses. Multiple group structural equation modeling showed that the relation between Grade 3 vocabulary and Grade

Cross-language Transfer of Metalinguistic Skills: Evidence from Spelling English Words by Korean Students in Grades 4, 5 and 6.

The present study examined unique and shared contributions of Korean (first language) phonological, orthographic and morphological awareness (PA, OA and MA, respectively) to English (second/foreign language) spelling among 287 fourth-grade, fifth-grade and sixth-grade Korean children. Korean measures of PA, OA and MA were administered, in addition to English vocabulary and spelling measures. Results from structural equation modelling showed that PA, OA and MA were caused by one common construct, metalinguistic awareness (META), and the contribution of Korean META to English spelling was statis

Effect of phonological training in French children with SLI: perspectives on voicing identification, discrimination and categorical perception.

The aim of the present study was to investigate the effect of auditory training on voicing perception in French children with specific language impairment (SLI). We used an adaptive discrimination training that was centred across the French phonological boundary (0 ms voice onset time--VOT). One group of nine children with SLI attended eighteen twenty-minute training sessions with feedback, and a control group of nine children with SLI did not receive any training. Identification, discrimination and categorical perception were evaluated before, during and after training as well as one month fo

Auditing description-logic-based medical terminological systems by detecting equivalent concept definitions.

OBJECTIVE: To specify and evaluate a method for auditing medical terminological systems (TSs) based on detecting concepts with equivalent definitions. This method addresses two important problems: redundancy, where the same concept is represented more than once (described by different terms), and underspecification, where different concepts have the same representation and hence appear indistinguishable from each other. DESIGN: The auditing method is applicable for TSs that are or can be represented in a description logic (DL). The method relies on the assumption that concept definitions are

Reading comprehension, word decoding and spelling in girls with autism spectrum disorders (ASD) or attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (AD/HD): performance and predictors.

BACKGROUND: Difficulties with aspects of literacy are often seen in children with autism spectrum disorders (ASD) and attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (AD/HD). The bases of the connections between these disorders and literacy difficulties are poorly understood. Furthermore, it is not clear if existing research is representative for girls. AIMS: There were three aims: (1) to compare performance in reading comprehension, word decoding, and spelling in girls with ASD (n = 20), AD/ HD (n = 36), and community girls with typical developing (girls; n = 54); (2) to assess rates of reading and

Speech and language therapy interventions for children with primary speech and language delay or disorder.

BACKGROUND: It is thought that approximately 6% of children have speech and language difficulties of which the majority will not have any other significant developmental difficulties. Whilst most children's difficulties resolve, children whose difficulties persist into primary school may have long-term problems concerning literacy, socialisation, behaviour and school attainment. OBJECTIVES: To examine the effectiveness of speech and language interventions for children with primary speech and language delay/disorder. SEARCH STRATEGY: The following databases were searched: The Cochrane Control

Examining reading comprehension text and question answering time differences in university students with and without a history of reading difficulties.

The current study aimed to examine performance times during text reading and question answering of students with and without a history of reading difficulties. Forty-three university students with a history of reading difficulties (HRD) were compared to 124 university students without a history of reading difficulties on measures of word and nonword reading rate, text reading rate and comprehension, and question answering times. Results showed that students with HRD demonstrated slower word, nonword, and text reading rates than their peers, but had comparable reading comprehension scores. Resu

Temporal stability of parent-reported behavior problems in late talkers over 2 years: a prospective case-control study from toddlerhood to preschool age.

BACKGROUND: Late talking (LT) in toddlers is a risk factor for language weakness that may interfere with the development of using language to regulate behavior and emotion and contribute to the development of behavior problems from early childhood. This study examined the temporal stability of parent-reported behavior problems among Mandarin-speaking LT toddlers from ages 2 to 4 in Taiwan. METHODS: Thirty-one LT and 31 typical language development (TLD) toddlers were assessed for their vocabulary production at age 2 with the Words and Sentences Forms of the MacArthur-Bates Communicative Devel

Speech Recognition in Noise by Children with and without Dyslexia: How is it Related to Reading?

PURPOSE: Developmental dyslexia is commonly viewed as a phonological deficit that makes it difficult to decode written language. But children with dyslexia typically exhibit other problems, as well, including poor speech recognition in noise. The purpose of this study was to examine whether the speech-in-noise problems of children with dyslexia are related to their reading problems, and if so, if a common underlying factor might explain both. The specific hypothesis examined was that a spectral processing disorder results in these children receiving smeared signals, which could explain both th

Benefits from morphological regularities in dyslexia are task dependent.

Are difficulties of individuals with dyslexia (IDDs) reduced or enhanced in tasks where linguistic regularities typically facilitate performance, such as vocabulary acquisition and reading? If impaired short-term memory and poor phonological decoding pose the main impediments to IDDs, then they are expected to compensate for these difficulties with a greater reliance on linguistic regularities, to reduce online load. However, if reduced benefits from regularities pose the main bottleneck, IDDs might benefit less than good readers from regularities in spite of their online difficulties. To test

Facilitated communicators' performance on a task of receptive language.

Most controlled studies of facilitated communication (FC) have not validated it. One task, however, on which positive effects of FC have been demonstrated without facilitator influence is the Peabody Picture Vocabulary Test-R (PPVT-R). The present study investigated if the use of FC could be validated for either a group of subjects with autism or a group with severe to profound cognitive impairments, on the PPVT-R when facilitators were effectively screened from all visual and auditory stimuli. Additionally, the effect of mode of input-auditory or visual-on subjects' performance was investigat

Psychometric properties of the Cognitive Reserve Questionnaire for Adolescents (CoRe-A).

INTRODUCTION: The objective is to design and analyze the psychometric properties of a new instrument, The Cognitive Reserve Questionnaire for Adolescents (CoRe-A), for assessing cognitive reserve in adolescents. METHODS: A systematic review was conducted to identify cognitive reserve components, before items concerning them were discussed in terms of their suitability, relevance, and clarity. The final 12-item CoRe-A was subsequently validated among 48 adolescents diagnosed with severe mental disorders and 37 healthy controls matched by age and sex. RESULTS: The CoRe-A scale showed a four-fa

Cognitive and environmental predictors of early literacy skills.

Not all young children benefit from book exposure in preschool age. It is claimed that the ability to hold information in mind (short-term memory), to ignore distraction (inhibition), and to focus attention and stay focused (sustained attention) may have a moderating effect on children's reactions to the home literacy environment. In a group of 228 junior kindergarten children with a native Dutch background, with a mean age of 54.29 months (SD = 2.12 months), we explored therefore the relationship between book exposure, cognitive control and early literacy skills. Parents filled in a HLE quest
