Assessment of pig welfare at slaughterhouse level: A systematic review of animal-based indicators suitable for inclusion in monitoring protocols.

Pig welfare constitutes a strategic pillar of sustainability within the pork industry. Consequently, there is a need to identify, develop and/or validate indicators for assessing pig wellbeing under commercial conditions. A systematic review following PRISMA guidelines identified 95 pig welfare indicators (PWIs) categorized into physiological, behavioral, health and post-mortem, and product quality. The review evaluated their validity and feasibility (V&F) for use in abattoirs to measure welfare during transport and slaughter. Thirty V&F indicators were found: one physiological (body temperatu

[Mechanism of spinal pain transmission and its regulation].

Morphine has been widely used for the treatment of acute, chronic, and cancer pain and is considered the strongest analgesic in clinical care. Conversely, morphine-induced analgesia may be accompanied by several side effects. Animal studies have demonstrated that low doses of morphine administered intrathecally can produce reliable analgesia for thermal, mechanical, and chemical nociceptive stimulation. On the other hand, high doses of morphine administered intrathecally may induce spontaneous nociceptive responses such as scratching, biting, and licking in mice as well as agitation and vocali

Ultrasonic Vocalization Acoustics After Recurrent Laryngeal Nerve Injury and Recovery.

OBJECTIVES: The lack of well-defined functional acoustic correlates of vocal fold paralysis in animal models creates challenges for translating basic science studies of recurrent laryngeal nerve (RLN) injury to patients with vocal fold paralysis. Capitalizing on natural communicative rodent ultrasonic vocalizations (USVs), this study aimed to (1) investigate the impact of RLN injury on USV acoustics in both acute and chronic stages of RLN injury and (2) to identify USV parameters with the greatest ecological validity specific to RLN injury. METHODS: USVs were recorded over 2 weeks (acute) in

A Chinese alligator in heliox: formant frequencies in a crocodilian.

Crocodilians are among the most vocal non-avian reptiles. Adults of both sexes produce loud vocalizations known as 'bellows' year round, with the highest rate during the mating season. Although the specific function of these vocalizations remains unclear, they may advertise the caller's body size, because relative size differences strongly affect courtship and territorial behaviour in crocodilians. In mammals and birds, a common mechanism for producing honest acoustic signals of body size is via formant frequencies (vocal tract resonances). To our knowledge, formants have to date never been do

Vocal fold injury following endotracheal intubation.

Vocal fold scarring results in the formation of fibrous tissue which disturbs the vibratory pattern of the fold during phonation. However, vocal fold scarring in humans is poorly understood because of the lack of clear case reports focusing on voice quality. The authors present a case of vocal fold scarring with changes in voice quality. At the time of injury the pedicle mucosa was cemented with fibrin glue. Phonation was inhibited for two weeks and tranilast (300 mg/day) was given for 3 months. Sixty-nine days later, perceptual evaluation showed a normal result and the phonation time became b

Use of botulinum toxin to lateralize true vocal cords: a biochemical method to relieve bilateral abductor vocal cord paralysis.

Using the mongrel dog as an animal model, we studied the effectiveness of botulinum toxin (Oculinum) to lateralize the true vocal cord. This experiment was undertaken in order to determine whether the toxin can improve the airway in subjects with bilateral abductor vocal cord paralysis. The toxin was injected into the cricothyroid muscle to block neuromuscular transmission at the motor end-plate. Paralysis of the cricothyroid muscle was achieved and documented by electromyography and videotaped endoscopy. Paralysis of the cricothyroid muscle decreases the tension of the true vocal cord and all

Delayed reinnervation of unilateral vocal cord paralysis in dogs.

The neuromuscular implantation technique for rehabilitation of unilateral vocal cord paralysis was performed in four dogs at the time of denervation and in six dogs after varying intervals of chronic denervation. As would be expected, the chronically denervated animals did not achieve the vocal cord excursion of the acute denervations, but some return of motion was noted even after six months. Histologic examination of the posterior cricoarytenoid muscle was correlated with the return of movement.

Vocal tract allometry in a mammalian vocal learner.

Acoustic allometry occurs when features of animal vocalisations can be predicted from body size measurements. Despite this being considered the norm, allometry sometimes breaks, resulting in species sounding smaller or larger than expected for their size. A recent hypothesis suggests that allometry-breaking mammals cluster into two groups: those with anatomical adaptations to their vocal tracts and those capable of learning new sounds (vocal learners). Here, we tested which mechanism is used to escape from acoustic allometry by probing vocal tract allometry in a proven mammalian vocal learner,

Functional morphology of the Alligator mississippiensis larynx with implications for vocal production.

Sauropsid vocalization is mediated by the syrinx in birds and the larynx in extant reptiles; but whereas avian vocal production has received much attention, the vocal mechanism of basal reptilians is poorly understood. The American alligator (Alligator mississippiensis) displays a large vocal repertoire during mating and in parent-offspring interactions. Although vocal outputs of these behaviors have received some attention, the underlying mechanism of sound production remains speculative. Here, we investigate the laryngeal anatomy of juvenile and adult animals by macroscopic and histological

Campbell's monkeys concatenate vocalizations into context-specific call sequences.

Primate vocal behavior is often considered irrelevant in modeling human language evolution, mainly because of the caller's limited vocal control and apparent lack of intentional signaling. Here, we present the results of a long-term study on Campbell's monkeys, which has revealed an unrivaled degree of vocal complexity. Adult males produced six different loud call types, which they combined into various sequences in highly context-specific ways. We found stereotyped sequences that were strongly associated with cohesion and travel, falling trees, neighboring groups, nonpredatory animals, unspec

Effect of subglottic pressure on fundamental frequency of the canine larynx with active muscle tensions.

The relation between subglottic pressure and the fundamental frequency of vocal fold vibration was studied by means of evoked phonation in an in vivo canine model. The evoked-phonation model involved electrical stimulation of the midbrain that resulted in consistent responses by respiratory and laryngeal musculature, accompanied by phonation. The dynamic stiffness properties of the vocal folds, especially the "cover," were investigated by delivering various amounts of air pressure to the larynx from an opening in the trachea. The fundamental frequency of vocal fold vibration increased linearly

Social engagement modulates wild monkeys' vocal expressions and the behavioral response to that of others.

Animal vocal communication relies on the dynamic interaction between emitter and receiver, with signals shaped within a social and embodied context. To fully understand how such interactive processes operate, we used yawn vocalizations of geladas (Theropithecus gelada), a species showing exceptional yawning variability. We first examined yawn calls produced in three contexts: high-intensity social, low-intensity social, and non-social context and found clear acoustic differences among them, revealing context-dependent modulation in a typically stereotyped behavior. We conducted field playback

Vocal compensation to noise in long-finned pilot whales (Globicephala melas).

Anthropogenic noise is considered a marine pollutant by the European Union and can impact marine animals in various ways. Noise that overlaps in time and frequency with animal communication signals can interfere with communication and thus impact ecological functions mediated by acoustic signals, depending on how animals compensate for increasing noise. Our study investigated Lombard responses in long-finned pilot whales using sound and movement recording tags in an area with high anthropogenic pressure, the Strait of Gibraltar. We tested if pilot whales increase their vocal amplitude in respo

Wind farm noise shifts vocalizations of a threatened shrub-steppe passerine.

Wind energy has experienced a notable development during the last decades, driving new challenges for animal communities. Although bird collisions with wind turbines and spatial displacement due to disturbance have been widely described in the literature, other potential impacts remain unclear. In this study, we addressed the effect of turbine noise on the vocal behaviour of a threatened shrub-steppe passerine highly dependent on acoustic communication, the Dupont's lark Chersophilus duponti. Based on directional recordings of 49 calling and singing males exposed to a gradient of turbine noise

Dual Sound Sources in Siamangs Generate Individually Rhythmic and Temporally Coordinated Vocal Emissions.

Temporal organization is crucial for efficient communication in many animal species, particularly those with complex vocal output. Singing primates structure their songs into rhythmic categories based on small-integer ratios between adjacent intervals. However, rhythmic organization usually emerges from a single sound source, and it remains unknown whether any species can produce rhythms through the coordination of multiple vocal production mechanisms. This study investigates rhythmicity in the song of siamangs (Symphalangus syndactylus). This singing primate uses two distinct vocal mechanisms

Histopathologic study of alternative substances for vocal fold medialization.

This research investigated the histopathologic and migratory properties of injectable alternatives for vocal fold medialization. Thirteen dogs underwent sectioning of the recurrent laryngeal nerve followed by vocal fold injection with 1 of 4 substances: Teflon, autologous fat, silicone suspension, or hydroxyapatite cement. Six months later, the animals were painlessly sacrificed and histopathologic analysis of the larynx and regional lymph nodes was performed. Although regional lymph node migration was noted, Teflon injection resulted in minimal vocal fold inflammatory reaction. Vocal folds in

Development and experiments of a continuum robotic system for transoral laryngeal surgery.

PURPOSE: Currently, self-retaining laryngoscopic surgery is not suitable for some patients, and there are dead zones relating to surgical field exposure and operation. The quality of the surgery can also be affected by the long periods of time required to complete it. Teleoperated continuum robots with flexible joints are expected to solve these issues. However, at the current stage of developing transoral robotic surgery systems, their large size affects the precision of surgical operative actions and there are high development and treatment costs. METHODS: We fabricated a flexible joint bas
