Measurements of chlorinated volatile organic compounds emitted from office printers and photocopiers.

Office devices can release volatile organic compounds (VOCs) partly generated by toners and inks, as well as particles of paper. The aim of the presented study is to identify indoor emissions of volatile halogenated organic compounds into the office workspace environment. Mixtures of organic pollutants emitted by seven office devices, i.e. printers and copiers, were analyzed by taking samples in laboratory conditions during the operation of these appliances. Tests of volatile organic compound emissions from selected office devices were conducted in a simulated environment (test chamber). Sampl

Volatile organic compounds enhance allergic airway inflammation in an experimental mouse model.

BACKGROUND: Epidemiological studies suggest an association between exposure to volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and adverse allergic and respiratory symptoms. However, whether VOCs exhibit a causal role as adjuvants in asthma development remains unclear. METHODS: To investigate the effect of VOC exposure on the development of allergic airway inflammation Balb/c mice were exposed to VOCs emitted by new polyvinylchloride (PVC) flooring, sensitized with ovalbumin (OVA) and characterized in acute and chronic murine asthma models. Furthermore, prevalent evaporated VOCs were analyzed and mice were

Distribution of volatile organic compounds over a semiconductor Industrial Park in Taiwan.

This study examined volatile organic compounds (VOC) concentration in ambient air collected during the years 2000--2003 at several different locations of Hsinchu Science-based Industrial Park (HSIP) in Taiwan. A canister automated GC-MS system analyzed the volatile organics in ambient air grasp samples according to T0-15 method. Oxygenated volatiles were the most abundant VOC detected in HSIP followed by aromatics that are commonly used as solvents in the semiconductor industries. The major components measured in the ambient air are 2-propanol (29-135 ppbv), acetone (12-164 ppbv), benzene (0.7

Role of kinetics in acute lethality of nonreactive volatile organic compounds (VOCs).

The role of kinetics in the acute inhalation toxicity of nonreactive, volatile organic compounds (VOCs), including lipophilic and hydrophilic compounds, was analyzed with a physiologically based pharmacokinetic (PB-PK) model for the rat. For 15 VOCs, a total of 23 LC50 values were retrieved from the literature. It was observed that the external exposure parameter (LC50.exposure length; in ppm.h), varied approximately 60-fold. Concentrations of compounds in the lipoid brain fraction were simulated using a kinetic model. This lead to a more than 10-fold reduction in the toxic range of the 15 VOC

New Architecture Based on Metal-Organic Frameworks and Spin Crossover Complexes to Detect Volatile Organic Compounds.

We present here the encapsulation of a spin crossover complex C1 [FeII(L)] (L: 4-amino-, 2-(2-pyridinylmethylene)hydrazide) inside MOF-808(Zr), a chemically robust Metal-Organic Framework. The compound C1⊂MOF-808 retains its crystallinity as well as a partial porosity compared to pristine MOF and shows solvatochromism under Volatile Organic compounds (VOCs) sorption associated to a spin state change of the guest complex. More specifically, this compound shows an interesting reversible color change under formaldehyde and formic acid vapor sorption and can therefore be considered as a new kind o

Nanofibrous membranes comprising intrinsically microporous polyimides with embedded metal-organic frameworks for capturing volatile organic compounds.

Here, we report the fabrication of nanofibrous air-filtration membranes of intrinsically microporous polyimide with metal-organic frameworks (MOFs). The membranes successfully captured VOCs from air. Two polyimides with surface areas up to 500 m2 g-1 were synthesized, and the impact of the porosity on the sorption kinetics and capacity of the nanofibers were investigated. Two Zr-based MOFs, namely pristine UiO-66 (1071 m2 g-1) and defective UiO-66 (1582 m2 g-1), were embedded into the nanofibers to produce nanocomposite materials. The nanofibers could remove polar formaldehyde and non-polar to

Optical Properties of Secondary Organic Aerosol Produced by Nitrate Radical Oxidation of Biogenic Volatile Organic Compounds.

Nighttime oxidation of biogenic volatile organic compounds (BVOCs) by nitrate radicals (NO3·) represents one of the most important interactions between anthropogenic and natural emissions, leading to substantial secondary organic aerosol (SOA) formation. The direct climatic effect of such SOA cannot be quantified because its optical properties and atmospheric fate are poorly understood. In this study, we generated SOA from the NO3· oxidation of a series BVOCs including isoprene, monoterpenes, and sesquiterpenes. The SOA were subjected to comprehensive online and offline chemical composition an

Volatile organic compounds from microalgae: sources, chemical diversity, biosynthesis, and bioactive potential.

Microalgae are prolific producers of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) that play important roles in atmospheric chemistry, aquatic ecosystem dynamics, and water quality, particularly through the generation of off-flavours and odors. Despite their ecological relevance and growing biotechnological interest, microalgal VOCs remain comparatively underexplored. These low-molecular-weight metabolites encompass a broad range of chemical classes, including terpenoids, sulfur-containing compounds, benzenes, furans, alkanes, alcohols, ketones, aldehydes, and esters. Knowledge of their chemical diversity

Global Health Hazards From Human-Derived Volatile Organic Compounds Amid Emission Variability.

Health risks from high air pollution exposure remain challenging despite pollution control strategies. Health hazards caused by particulate matter and ozone have been reported for the past three decades. Here, we report the hazard quotient for Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) causing non-carcinogenic risk globally using chemistry-climate model simulations. We report hazard quotient (HQ) for three scenarios: (a) baseline scenario, (b) continued increasing emissions leading to doubling of anthropogenic VOCs (DVOCS), and (c) mitigation scenarios where emissions are reduced to half (HalfVOCS). Applications and challenges of exhaled volatile organic compounds in critically ill patients.

Early detection of critical illness is essential for timely intervention and improved outcomes. Conventional diagnostic methods, such as laboratory tests and imaging, are invasive and often delayed. In recent years, non-invasive monitoring approaches, particularly exhaled breath analysis, have gained attention in critical care. Various analytical platforms, including gas chromatography-mass spectrometry, proton transfer reaction mass spectrometry, and electronic nose systems, have been employed to identify volatile organic compound (VOC) patterns associated with acute conditions. Elevated alde

Direct Detection of Volatile Organic Compounds through Cationization Using ICP-MS/MS.

We have developed a new analytical technique for the detection of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) using inductively coupled plasma tandem mass spectrometry (ICP-MS/MS). Eight VOCs of various polarities (acetic acid, 2-butanone, pyridine, 2-methylfuran, ethylene, benzene, toluene, and limonene) were introduced into the collision/reaction cell (CRC) of the ICP-MS/MS, bypassing the ICP ion source. This approach enabled a softer ionization than the typical ICP, allowing the detection of the molecules in their intact form. In this study, to explore the potential of cationization as a soft ionizat
