An exploratory study of volatile and semi-volatile organic compounds in PM2.5 atmospheric particles from an outdoor environment in Brazil.

The development of methods for determining volatile and semi-volatile organic compounds in public spaces has become necessary to identify potential health and environmental risks. This study presents a practical methodology for sampling, extracting, detecting, and identifying these compounds in a vehicular traffic region in Belo Horizonte, Brazil. The methodology uses direct-immersion solid phase microextraction (DI-SPME) and static headspace (SHS) to extract SVOCs/VOCs. Comprehensive time-of-flight gas chromatography mass spectrometry (GC×GC/Q-TOFMS) and gas chromatography coupled to mass spe

Temperature-Directed Reprogramming of Volatile and Semi-Volatile Metabolism in Ginkgo biloba Microclones Under Cold and Heat Stress.

Temperature is a major determinant of plant metabolic plasticity, yet its role in directing volatile and semi-volatile specialized metabolism in Ginkgo biloba remains poorly understood. In this study, we investigated how contrasting low- and high-temperature treatments reshape secondary metabolite contents in G. biloba microclones cultivated in vitro. Plants were exposed to cold (+3 °C) and heat (+30 °C) conditions, and their responses were analyzed using GC-MS profiling, anatomical measurements, chlorophyll fluorescence, and multivariate statistics. Cold treatment selectively increased the ab

Impact of Post-Harvest Apple Scab on Peel Microbiota, Fermentation Dynamics, and the Volatile/Non-Volatile Composition of Cider.

Apple scab is a disease caused by Venturia inaequalis; it alters the vegetative cycle of apple trees and affects the fruits in orchards or during post-harvest storage. Utilizing rotten apples in cidermaking is a promising technique to mitigate crop losses; nonetheless, uncertainties persist regarding the beneficial effects of damaged fruits. This study involves a thorough chemical analysis of cider produced from both healthy and scab-infected fruits to identify compositional changes caused by microbial proliferation and to assess their impact on cider quality. Apples infected by post-harvest a

Assessment of the presence and risk associated with volatile and semi-volatile organic compounds in urban areas close to petrochemical parks.

This study monitored volatile organic compounds (VOCs) and semi-volatile organic compounds (SVOCs) in urban areas near petrochemical industries using passive sampling. Sampling at six urban sites was conducted throughout 2023, with VOCs sampled every 14 days and SVOCs every 2 months, resulting in a total of 180 samples. VOCs and SVOCs were determined by gas chromatography-mass spectrometry, coupled to thermal desorption in the case of VOCs and after pressurised liquid extraction in the case of SVOCs. Alkanes were the VOCs found at the highest concentrations, with average concentrations between

Clarification of generation mechanism of volatilization flux based on detailed analysis of transport phenomena near the ground surface and quantitative evaluation of influencing factors.

Assessing human health risks associated with inhalation exposure of volatile chemical substances (VCSs) volatilized from contaminated soil requires quantitative evaluation of volatilization fluxes (VFs) and an understanding of how environmental factors impact VF generation. We developed a numerical model that considers advection-dispersion and VCSs volatilization in unsaturated soil, enabling VF prediction through parameter optimization using soil column tests. We conducted parametric analyses to assess how key parameters, such as soil particle size, contamination depth, temperature, and surfa

The influence of humic substances on the speciation and bioavailability of dissolved mercury and methylmercury, measured as uptake by Chaoborus larvae and loss by volatilization.

The influence of dissolved humic substances (HS) on the bioavailability of dissolved inorganic and methyl mercury (Hg) was quantified by measuring the direct uptake of 203Hg in Chaoborus larvae using laboratory microcosms containing artificial freshwater. The animals were exposed individually in triplicate aquaria at 10 different concentrations of HS covering the whole range found in natural freshwaters (0-110 mg C l(-1)). Mercury-203 concentrations were monitored repeatedly in the same individuals and in their ambient water during up to 10 days. Near-steady state Hg concentrations in Chaoboru

Lung protective characteristics of volatile anesthetic sedation.

This narrative review serves as an update to previous reviews on the topic after the results of recent randomized controlled trials and meta-analyses. It describes some of the latest evidence around the use of volatile sedation as an alternative to intravenous sedation in mechanically ventilated patients in the intensive care unit (ICU) and their possible lung-protective properties. Preclinical evidence supporting an anti-inflammatory protective effect of volatile anesthetics suggests that volatile sedation could be employed in patients with inflammatory lung injury, including acute respirator

Role of volatility mixing in wealth condensation transition.

We study the role of heterogeneous volatility in a networked wealth dynamics model and its impact on the wealth condensation transition. Extending the Bouchaud-Mézard framework, we introduce binary volatility in networks and investigate how its configuration affects the effective power-law tail exponent of the wealth distribution. Using a stochastic block model, we control the mixing between volatility groups and show that the effective exponent is governed not only by the global parameter Λ=2J/β^{2} but also by the volatility configuration in the network. We find that local interactions betwe

Underground Signals: The Ecological Power of Root Volatiles.

Root volatiles mediate diverse belowground interactions among plants, microbes, and invertebrates, but biological and environmental conditions strongly influence their production, movement, perception, and ecological effects. This review synthesizes current knowledge through an integrative conceptual framework linking five dimensions: (1) chemical diversity and biosynthesis; (2) regulation by biotic and abiotic factors; (3) plant internal signaling and resource allocation; (4) ecological adaptation and reciprocal evolutionary interactions with soil organisms; and (5) implications for agricultu

Volatile Compounds in Musk and Their Anti-Stroke Mechanisms.

Background/Objectives: Musk is a widely used traditional Chinese medicine derived from musk deer that has the pharmacological effects of "activating blood dredging collateral" and "consciousness-restoring resuscitation". Its volatile compounds (VCs) play a key role in these effects, especially in the treatment of stroke. However, there have been no comprehensive studies on the differences in the VCs of these different musks. This study investigated the differences in the VCs of different musks and the potential targets and mechanisms of action for stroke. Methods: Different musks were studied

Bacterial volatile organic compound specialists in the phycosphere.

Labile dissolved organic carbon in the surface oceans accounts for about one-fourth of carbon produced through photosynthesis and turns over on average every 3 days, fueling one of the largest engines of microbial heterotrophic production on the planet. Volatile organic compounds are poorly constrained components of dissolved organic carbon. Here, we detected 72 m/z signals, corresponding to unique volatile organic compounds, including petroleum hydrocarbons, totaling ~18.5 nM in the culture medium of a model diatom. In five cocultures with bacteria adapted to grow with this diatom, 1-59 m/z s

Nephrotoxicity and Modern Volatile Anesthetics: A Narrative Review.

Volatile anesthetics, while increasingly utilized in intensive care medicine, are associated with significant renal adverse effects. A critical safety concern-particularly with sevoflurane-involves its potential impact on renal function. Pathophysiologically, inorganic fluoride levels exceeding 50 µmol/L are recognized as a threshold for nephrogenic diabetes insipidus, a condition generally considered reversible. Additionally, the sevoflurane degradation product "compound A" has been implicated in direct renal tubular and glomerular toxicity. Specifically, exposure has been correlated with glo

Volatile compounds and aroma characteristics of mushrooms: a review.

Mushrooms are popular due to their rich medicinal and nutritional value. Of the many characteristics of mushrooms, aroma has received extensive attention and research as a key determinant of consumer preference. This paper reviews the production, role and contribution of common volatile compounds (VCs) in wild and cultivated mushrooms, and explores the methods used to characterize them and the factors influencing aroma. To date, more than 347 common VCs have been identified in mushrooms, such as aldehydes, ketones, alcohols and sulfur-containing compounds. Extraction and identification of VCs
