The mutagenic activity of paracetamol (PC) was studied on a group of healthy persons (3 men, 8 women) after the simultaneous administration of 3 X 1000 mg of PC and an identical dose of PC + 1000 mg of ascorbic acid within a period of 8 hours. Blood sample tests were made at intervals of 0, 24, 72 and 168 hours. A cytogenetic analysis showed that in 24 hours PC had increased the aberrant cell frequency to 2.77 +/- 0.37 per cent as distinct from 1.68 +/- 0.30 per cent (p less than 0.05) prior to the drug. Enprostil is a synthetic dehydro-prostaglandin E2 with gastroduodenal ulcer-healing and mucosal-protective properties. In order to evaluate the absorptive capacity of the colonic mucosa, colonoscopy was used to investigate in six healthy volunteers the colonic absorption of the nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drug diclofenac (Voltaren). A double blind study of partial thiamin restriction was undertaken in 19 volunteer male medical students for a period of 4 to 5 weeks. The causes of disqualification in a volunteer blood donor population for a period of two years were analyzed. Of 138,436 prospective volunteer blood donors, 24,327 (17.6%) donors were disqualified. Among 223 volunteer blood donors who were studied for evidence of cytomegalovirus (CMV) infection, 58 percent had complement-fixing antibody and 59 percent had indirect hemagglutinating antibody to CMV. A change from a paid to a volunteer blood donor system was instituted as recommended by the American Association of Blood Banks "Statement on the National Blood Policy." The incidence of counterelectrophoresis HBSAg positive units from each donor group was determined. Of 2,785 purchased units, 3 (0.10%) were HBSAg positive, while 34 (0.94%) of 3,609 units from volunteers were HBSAg positive. This 840% increase suggests that careful selection of donor population rather than blind reliance on volunteers should be emphasized in providing the safest blood for transfusion.
