Emerging research emphasizes early-life war exposure as a key determinant of later-life health in older adults from low- and middle-income countries (LMICs). Yet, the linkages between war exposure, social networks, and later-life health behaviors have received little attention. Using data from the 2018 Vietnam Health and Aging Study, we investigate how early-life war experiences relate to the social networks and health behaviors of 1195 Vietnamese men aged 60+ who survived the Vietnam War (1965-1975). We utilize latent class analysis to identify men's network types and examine the associations

BACKGROUND: Previous research has well documented the negative effect of exposure to war trauma on refugees' mental health. However, few prior investigations have examined the nature of the traumatic events and the potential mechanisms involved.
METHODS: This study explored the mediating role of interpersonal sensitivity in the relationship between exposure to different types of war traumas and psychological stress in a community sample of 300 Darfuri asylum seekers living in Israel.
RESULTS: A principal component analysis on a set of 17 traumatic experiences identified four trauma dimension

BACKGROUND: Despite more than a decade of extensive, international efforts to characterize and understand the increased symptom and illness-reporting among veterans of the 1991 Gulf War, concern over possible long-term health effects related to this deployment continue. The purpose of this study was to describe the long-term hospitalization experience of the subset of U.S. Gulf War veterans still on active duty between 1994 and 2004.
METHODS: Gulf War veterans on active duty rosters as of October 1, 1994, were identified (n = 211 642) and compared with veterans who had separated from military

BACKGROUND: Despite being an exceptionally vulnerable group, internally displaced children are underrepresented in the literature. Parents are instrumental in providing support to these children.
OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study is to investigate the moderating role of perceived parental reflective functioning (PRF) in the relationship between parental war exposure, parental stress, and parent-rated child distress.
PARTICIPANTS AND METHOD: Ninety-six internally displaced Israeli families with young children ages 3-6 were involved. Data was gathered online through online questionnaires using

A small group of Gulf War veterans possess retained fragments of depleted uranium (DU) shrapnel, the long-term health consequences of which are undetermined. We evaluated the clinical health effects of DU exposure in Gulf War veterans compared with nonexposed Gulf War veterans. History and follow-up medical examination were performed on 29 exposed veterans and 38 nonexposed veterans. Outcome measures employed were urinary uranium determinations, clinical laboratory values, and psychiatric and neurocognitive assessment. DU-exposed Gulf War veterans with retained metal shrapnel fragments are exc

There are biologic reasons to believe that the period between the larche and the first full-term pregnancy is a particularly sensitive period in a woman's life regarding the development of breast cancer. In this ecologic study, data provided by the Norwegian Cancer Registry were analyzed to compare risk of breast cancer among women who experienced this sensitive period before, during, or after World War II. An ordinary age-cohort model and a model where the cohort was described by exposure by calendar period and sensitivity to this exposure at different ages, were fitted to the data. The incid

BACKGROUND: Exposure to war-related trauma has long been recognised to have an adverse effect on mental health. We attempted to investigate whether people who have clinically significant personality-related problems 15 years after a war are more likely to have been exposed to severe war-related trauma than those who do not have significant personality difficulties.
METHODS: A case -control study was conducted in southern Croatia, fifteen years after the 1991-1995 war. We recruited 268 participants: 182 cases who scored positively on the International Personality Disorder Examination scale (IP

BACKGROUND: The aim of the study was to determine the amount of trauma impact, post-traumatic stress symptoms and current psychopathological distress in a sample of former German children of World War II.
METHODS: 93 participants were recruited through the local press, and assessed using the modified Post-traumatic Diagnostic Scale (PDS) and the Symptom Checklist (SCL-90-R).
RESULTS: Subjects reported a high qualitative and quantitative degree of trauma exposure. 13.8% reported PTSD-related symptoms after the war, and 10.8% reported current symptoms. PTSD symptoms after World War II were sig

Now, half a century after the Vietnam War, Agent Orange exposure during the war is increasingly discussed as a risk factor for neurological diseases, particularly dementia and Alzheimer's disease, among Korean and U.S. Vietnam War veterans. Emerging evidence supports associations between dioxin exposure originating from Agent Orange and alterations in brain morphology and function among Vietnamese residents, including children living in areas around former U.S. airbases exposed to 2,3,7,8-tetrachlorodibenzo-p-dioxin (TCDD) after the Vietnam War. This paper summarizes what is known about the ef

BACKGROUND: Hundreds of thousands of soldiers face exposure to combat during wars across the globe. The health effects of traumatic war experiences have not been adequately assessed across the lifetime of these veterans.
OBJECTIVE: To identify the role of traumatic war experiences in predicting postwar nervous and physical disease and mortality using archival data from military and medical records of veterans from the Civil War.
DESIGN: An archival examination of military and medical records of Civil War veterans was conducted. Degree of trauma experienced (prisoner-of-war experience, percen

The study explored the intricate relationship between political armed conflict, mental health outcomes, and emotion regulation strategies, focusing on cognitive reappraisal and emotion suppression. Drawing on extensive literature, we examined the impact of the Israel-Hamas war on mental health, particularly post-traumatic stress symptoms (PTSS) and anxiety. Using data from a nationally representative sample of 517 Israeli adults surveyed four weeks after the October 7 war began, we conducted path analysis to examine the direct and indirect effects of conflict exposure on mental health outcomes

Many U.S. Gulf War-era veterans complained of poor cognition following the war. This study assessed neuropsychological functioning in veterans 10 years after the war through objective tests. 2189 Gulf War-era veterans (1061 deployed, 1128 non-deployed) were examined at 1 of 16 U.S. Veterans Affairs medical centers. Outcomes included neuropsychological domains derived from factor analysis and individual test scores. Deployed veterans performed significantly worse than non-deployed veterans on 2 of 8 factors (motor speed & sustained attention, analysis not corrected for multiple comparisons) and

OBJECTIVES: We examine the impacts of trauma exposures and family stressors associated with the Vietnam War on musculoskeletal health and posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD) outcomes in elderly Vietnamese who were widely impacted by the war as young adults. Noting that wars' impacts extend beyond male veterans in most survivor populations, we give attention to male and female war survivors placed in a variety of roles vis-a-vis the war.
METHOD: Utilizing data from the 2010 Vietnam Health and Aging Pilot Study (N = 405), we use logistic and Poisson regression models to estimate the effect of

In the last 15 years, the US and UK have fought two major wars in the Persian Gulf region. Controversy has arisen over the nature and causes of health problems among military veterans of these two wars. Toxic exposures have been hypothesised to cause the majority of the long-term health problems experienced by veterans of the 1991 Gulf War. The assessment of these toxic exposures and the resolution of controversy about their health effects provide a unique case study for understanding how toxicological disputes are settled in the US. Neither clinical examination of ill war veterans nor scienti

BACKGROUND: Resilience is a key factor in coping with and recovering from large-scale traumatic events. Although volunteering has generally been associated with improving or maintaining resilience, evidence from wartime contexts is mixed. This study examined the association between volunteering during armed conflict and individual resilience.
METHODS: We used data from two population-based studies, conducted within six weeks (Study 1, n = 453) and 6 months after (Study 2, n = 1035) the October 7th, 2023 terror attacks and onset of the ensuing war in Israel. In Study 1, multivariable linear re

BACKGROUND: We previously reported evidence of reduced cortical gray matter (GM), white matter (WM), and hippocampal volume in Gulf War (GW) veterans with predicted exposure to low-levels of nerve agent according to the 2000 Khamisiyah plume model analysis. Because there is suggestive evidence that other nerve agent exposures may have occurred during the Gulf War, we examined the association between the self-reported frequency of hearing chemical alarms sound during deployment in the Gulf War and regional brain volume in GW veterans.
METHODS: Ninety consecutive GW veterans (15 female, mean ag

Exposure to war and terrorism is linked to psychological distress, impacting both those directly involved and their relatives. Children, who are especially vulnerable due to their developing cognitive and emotional capacities, are significantly affected. However, there is a lack of research on the psychological effects of war and terrorism on autistic children. This study aims to fill this gap by examining the psychological distress experienced by Israeli autistic children compared to non-autistic children following the October 7th, 2023, terrorism attack and subsequent war. The study involved

BACKGROUND: Self-reported psychiatric status of Australian Vietnam war veterans was determined 20-25 years after the war and its relation to combat was investigated.
METHOD: A simple random sample of Australian Army Vietnam veterans was interviewed nationally using standardized interviews and self-completion tests to assess the prevalence of lifetime and current psychiatric illness and its relationship to combat. Army records were used to extract data on the cohort for use in regression-based adjustment for non-response.
RESULTS: The conditions mainly affecting the Australian veterans were a

BACKGROUND: The October 7th, 2023, attack in Israel and the ensuing war exposed Israeli youth to intense and prolonged traumatic stress. This study aimed to: (1) examine the prevalence of probable post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) among Israeli adolescents, and (2) identify associated risk and resilience factors for PTSD symptoms within the context of prolonged exposure to threat and uncertainty due to ongoing war and conflict.
METHODS: A cross-sectional digital survey was conducted between October and December 2024. Data were collected from 744 adolescents aged 14-18 years, including the
