In year one of the COVID-19 epidemic, the incidence of infection for US carceral populations was 5.5-fold higher than that in the community. Prior to the rapid roll out of a comprehensive jail surveillance program of Wastewater-Based Surveillance (WBS) and individual testing for SARS-CoV-2, we sought the perspectives of formerly incarcerated individuals regarding mitigation strategies against COVID-19 to inform acceptability of the new program. In focus groups, participants discussed barriers to their receiving COVID-19 testing and vaccination. We introduced WBS and individual nasal self-testi

Wastewater surveillance, also known as wastewater-based epidemiology (WBE), has been successfully used to detect SARS-CoV-2 and other viruses in sewage in many locations in the United States and globally. This includes implementation of the surveillance on college and university campuses. A two-phase study was conducted during the 2020-2021 academic year to test the feasibility of a WBE system on campus and to supplement the clinical COVID-19 testing performed for the student, staff, and faculty body. The primary objective during the Fall 2020 semester was to monitor a large portion of the on-

The quantification and molecular characterization of the AdV genome in urban wastewater samples (WWSs) collected weekly at a wastewater treatment plant (WWTP) in Milan from 1 January 2021 (week 2021-01) to 1 May 2022 (week 2022-17) were performed. The concentration of the AdV genome was graphically compared with the AdV positive rate observed in the respiratory/gastrointestinal specimens from individuals hospitalized with acute respiratory/gastrointestinal infections collected from one of the major hospitals in Milan in the same time series. An increase in the AdV circulation in WWSs was seen

Sequencing genetic material from community wastewater facilitates the study of virus diversity. Diversity can be estimated using the variation in nucleotides and number of variants identified, increasing the information obtained from one wastewater sample. Using 12,290 wastewater sequences of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), we found that virus diversity is a strong indicator of disease transmission, with a significant correlation between average weekly diversity and average weekly new COVID-19 infections. Although the concentration of viruses is the common measure

In Africa, the disease burden of diarrheal and respiratory diseases is amplified by limited surveillance capacity, diagnostic limitations, and socioeconomic inequalities. In rapidly urbanizing settings such as Kigali (Rwanda), integrating wastewater-based epidemiology (WBE) into existing surveillance systems offers a promising strategy for generating real-time epidemiological intelligence, identifying community-level hotspots, and addressing gaps in traditional reporting systems. Gastrointestinal and respiratory infections remain major causes of morbidity and mortality globally, particularly i

The COVID-19 pandemic has emphasized the critical need for accurate disease modeling to inform public health interventions. Traditional reliance on confirmed infection data is often hindered by reporting delays and under-reporting, while antigen or antibody testing of a full cohort can be costly and impractical. Wastewater-based surveillance offers a promising alternative by detecting viral concentrations from fecal shedding, potentially providing a more accurate estimate of true infection prevalence. However, challenges remain in optimizing sampling protocols, locations, and normalization str

Wastewater-based surveillance (WBS) captures the presence of disease in a community of people regardless of symptom status and supports public health interventions to mitigate the spread of disease. Wastewater-based surveillance can be applied to a variety of spatial scales and population sizes, particularly where households are served by municipal wastewater collection systems (e.g., large areas served by a single wastewater treatment plant (WWTP), smaller areas contained within a single neighbourhood, individual facilities). Since the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, governments have

Wastewater surveillance is a valuable tool that can be used to track infectious diseases in a community. In September 2020, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) established the National Wastewater Surveillance System (NWSS) to coordinate and build the nation's capacity to detect and quantify concentrations of SARS-CoV-2 RNA in U.S. wastewater. This is the first surveillance summary of NWSS, covering September 1, 2020 to December 31, 2022. Through partnerships with state, tribal, local, and territorial health departments, NWSS became a national surveillance platform that can be

Wastewater analysis (WWA) has been used as a tool to monitor population drug use, both pharmaceutical and illicit, for over 15 years. Policymakers, law enforcement and treatment services may use WWA-derived data to seek an objective understanding of the extent of drug use in specific areas. Therefore, wastewater data should best be reported in a meaningful form to allow those that are not experts in the field to compare the scale within and between drug classes. Excreted drug loads quantified in wastewater describe the mass of drug present in the sewer. Normalisation for wastewater flow and po

The lack of standardized methods and large differences in virus concentration and extraction workflows have hampered Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS-CoV-2) wastewater surveillance and data reporting practices. Numerous studies have shown that adsorption-extraction (AE) method holds promise, yet several uncertainties remain regarding the optimal AE workflow. Several procedural components may influence the recovered concentrations of target nucleic acid, including membrane types, homogenization instruments, speed and duration, and lysis buffer. In this study, 42 different AE workflows th

Wastewater-based epidemiology (WBE) surveillance of COVID-19 and other future outbreaks is a challenge for developing countries as most households are not connected to a sewerage system. In December 2019, SARS-CoV-2 RNA was detected in the Danube River at a site severely affected by wastewaters from Belgrade. Rivers are much more complex systems than wastewater systems, and efforts are needed to address all the factors influencing the adoption of WBE as an alternative to targeting raw wastewater. Our objective was to provide a more detailed insight into the potential of SARS-CoV-2 surveillance

The current severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2) diagnostic capacity is limited in defined communities, posing a challenge in tracking and tracing new infections. Monitoring student residences, which are considered infection hotspots, with targeted wastewater surveillance is crucial. This study evaluated the efficacy of SARS-CoV-2 targeted wastewater surveillance for outbreak mitigation at Stellenbosch University's student residences in South Africa. Using torpedo-style passive sampling devices, wastewater samples were collected biweekly from manholes at twelve Stellenb

Wastewater-based epidemiology (WBE) is a complementary, well-established comprehensive, cost-effective, and rapid technique for monitoring of illicit drugs used in a general population. This systematic review and meta-analysis is the first to estimate the rank and consumption rate of illicit drugs through WBE studies. In the current study, the related investigations regarding the illicit drug consumption rate based on WBE were searched among the international databases including Scopus, PubMed, Science direct, Google scholar, and local database, Magiran from 2012 up to May 2019. The growing emergence of new psychoactive substances (NPS) challenges traditional approaches to drug monitoring, highlighting a need for innovative surveillance strategies. We explored the potential to better understand the NPS market in Australia by combining wastewater analysis with toxicosurveillance programs. Focussing on a time of year of likely higher NPS and drug use, influent wastewater samples were collected from four Australian states (South Australia, Victoria, Queensland, and New South Wales) over the New Year period from 2019-2020 to 2024-2025. Clinical samples presenting between

Wastewater-based epidemiology is the detection of pathogens from sewage systems and the interpretation of these data to improve public health. Its use has increased in scope since 2020, when it was demonstrated that SARS-CoV-2 RNA could be successfully extracted from the wastewater of affected populations. In this Perspective we provide an overview of recent advances in pathogen detection within wastewater, propose a framework for identifying the utility of wastewater sampling for pathogen detection and suggest areas where analytics require development. Ensuring that both data collection and a

Wastewater surveillance (WS) helps to improve the understanding of the spread of communicable diseases in communities. WS can assist public health decision-makers in the design and implementation of timely mitigation measures. There is an increased need to use reliable, cost-effective, simple, and rapid WS systems, given traditional analytical (or 'gold-standard') programs are instrument/time-intensive, and dependent on highly skilled personnel. This study investigated the application of the portable GeneXpert platform for WS of severe acute respiratory syndrome coronavirus 2 (SARS-CoV-2), inf

The COVID-19 pandemic has revealed the importance of wastewater-based epidemiology (WBE) due to its advantages over traditional surveillance systems. However, low viral prevalence poses a significant challenge for reliable detection of SARS-CoV-2 in endemic wastewater settings. This study aimed to improve detection sensitivity of SARS-CoV-2 by applying the chip-based digital PCR (dPCR) approach targeting the CDC N1 and N2 genes to wastewater samples processed with a combined magnetic bead concentration method during a low-prevalence period in South Korea. Here, the evaluation results using dPC
