Sea star wasting syndrome reaches the high Antarctic: Two recent outbreaks in McMurdo Sound.

Sea star wasting syndrome (SSWS) can cause widespread mortality in starfish populations as well as long-lasting changes to benthic community structure and dynamics. SSWS symptoms have been documented in numerous species and locations around the world, but to date there is only one record of SSWS from the Antarctic and this outbreak was associated with volcanically-driven high temperature anomalies. Here we report outbreaks of SSWS-like symptoms that affected ~30% of individuals of Odontaster validus at two different sites in McMurdo Sound, Antarctica in 2019 and 2022. Unlike many SSWS events i

Fever of Unknown Origin, Wasting Syndrome and Bone Marrow Involvement: A Leprosy Case Report.

Mycobacterium leprae, the etiologic agent of leprosy, is an acid-fast-staining and slow-growing bacilli that infect macrophages and Schwann cells individually or through forming globi. The clinical presentation of leprosy is broad and depends on the host immune response. We report a case of a 42-year-old Brazilian man presenting with fever of unknown origin (FUO), anemia, wasting syndrome, and neuropathy. The diagnosis of lepromatous leprosy was made after an extensive investigation revealed the presence of M. leprae in the bone marrow. Bone marrow involvement in leprosy is rare and some autho

Protein-energy wasting syndrome in advanced chronic kidney disease: prevalence and specific clinical characteristics.

INTRODUCTION: Protein-energy wasting (PEW) is associated with increased mortality and differs depending on the chronic kidney disease (CKD) stage and the dialysis technique. The prevalence in non-dialysis patients is understudied and ranges from 0 to 40.8%. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the nutritional status of a group of Spanish advanced CKD patients by PEW criteria and subjective global assessment (SGA). PATIENTS AND METHODS: Cross-sectional study of 186 patients (101 men) with a mean age of 66.1±16 years. The nutritional assessment consisted of: SGA, PEW criteria, 3-day dietary records, anthrop

Diagnosis and Treatment of Cerebral Salt Wasting Syndrome With Cryptococcal Meningitis in HIV Patient.

Hyponatremia is one of the most common electrolyte imbalances in HIV patients. The differential diagnosis may include hypovolemic hyponatremia, syndrome of inappropriate antidiuretic hormone secretion (SIADH), and adrenal insufficiency. Here, we describe a case of hyponatremia secondary to cerebral salt wasting syndrome (CSWS) in an HIV patient with cryptococcal meningitis. A 52-year-old man with a history of diabetes and HIV was admitted for headache and found to have cryptococcal meningitis. He was also found to have asymptomatic hyponatremia. He had signs of hypovolemia, such as orthostatic

Cerebral salt-wasting syndrome after hematopoietic stem cell transplantation in adolescents: 3 case reports.

Cerebral salt-wasting syndrome (CSWS) is a rare disease characterized by a extracellular volume depletion and hyponatremia induced by marked natriuresis. It is mainly reported in patients who experience a central nervous system insult, such as cerebral hemorrhage or encephalitis. The syndrome of inappropriate antidiuretic hormone secretion is a main cause of severe hyponatremia after hematopoietic stem cell transplantation, whereas CSWS is rarely reported. We report 3 patients with childhood acute leukemia who developed CSWS with central nervous system complication after hematopoietic stem cel

Modified camitz opponensplasty for severe thenar wasting secondary to carpal tunnel syndrome: case series.

The Camitz procedure is a simple tendon transfer for patients who have loss of opposition in longstanding carpal tunnel syndrome. Historically, the Camitz procedure restored abduction only. However, through modification with the use of a pulley, the ideal axis of opposition can be achieved. The purpose of this article was to revisit an established method of the modified Camitz transfer in 6 patients with severe thenar wasting and weakness resulting from median nerve compression, identified between 2010 and 2012. We review the indications, contraindications, surgical technique, complications, a

Epidemiological investigation of the prevalence and features of postweaning multisystemic wasting syndrome in Japan.

To investigate the prevalence and features of postweaning multisystemic wasting syndrome (PMWS) in Japan, an epidemiological study was conducted in 692 weaned pigs with various clinical signs, commonly including wasting or weight loss, collected from 129 swine farms between 2000 and 2003. The presence of PMWS was diagnosed by the detection of characteristic histological lesions and moderate to large amounts of porcine circovirus type 2 (PCV2) antigen within the lesions in multiple lymphoid tissues. Postweaning multisystemic wasting syndrome was positive in 23.4% of pigs (162/692) over the cour

Spatiotemporal patterns and risks of herd breakdowns in pigs with postweaning multisystemic wasting syndrome.

A retrospective cohort study of 116 British pig farms was undertaken to investigate the epidemiological risk factors associated with herd breakdowns with postweaning multisystemic wasting syndrome (PMWS). Farmers reported the PMWS status of their herd (case definition 1) and, where applicable, when the disease was first suspected and what they observed; they described a prolonged increase in mortality in six to 16-week-old pigs that was not attributable to any disease known to be on their farm. There was over 90 per cent agreement on the farmers' PMWS status between the farmers and their veter

An exploratory study on risk factors for postweaning multisystemic wasting syndrome (PMWS) in Spain.

An exploratory case-control study was carried out in Spain in 2002/2003, involving 62 pig farms of different production systems to assess risk factors that, in association with PCV2 infection, induce postweaning multisystemic wasting syndrome (PMWS) expression. To achieve this objective two groups of farms selected according to their PMWS status were compared: "cases" (farms with clinical PMWS, n = 32) and "controls" (farms without clinical PMWS, n = 30). A filled-in questionnaire and 45 blood samples (15 sows, and two groups of 15 pigs of 12 and 20 weeks of age, respectively) were obtained fr

Pathogenesis of postweaning multisystemic wasting syndrome caused by Porcine circovirus 2: An immune riddle.

Postweaning multisystemic wasting syndrome (PMWS) is a disease of pigs first recognised in North America in 1997 and subsequently reported worldwide that is caused by Porcine circovirus 2 (PCV2), a member of the family Circoviridae. The most consistent feature of PMWS is a generalized depletion of lymphocytes. Secondary infections with opportunistic organisms are common. There is evidence that the destruction of thymic lymphocytes has a central role in the pathogenesis of PMWS. Pigs with PMWS have altered cytokine responses to mitogens and recall antigens. It remains unknown what cells are pri

Association of lymphopenia with porcine circovirus type 2 induced postweaning multisystemic wasting syndrome (PMWS).

The composition of peripheral blood leukocyte populations was studied following experimental PCV2-infection in 3-week-old piglets. Four of 10 PCV2-infected piglets developed clinical and pathological symptoms consistent with postweaning multisystemic wasting syndrome (PMWS) between 14 and 21 days post-inoculation (p.i.), and were characterised as PMWS-affected. Only these four PMWS-affected piglets, but neither the non-symptomatic infected nor control animals, developed a clear leukopenia. Kinetic analysis demonstrated a clear loss of both CD21(+) B and CD3(+) T lymphocytes in the PMWS-affecte

An analysis of the association of gastroenteric lesions with chronic wasting syndrome of marmosets.

Retrospective pathology data from necropsies of 162 marmosets, Saguinus oedipus, were studied to determine the nature of chronic wasting syndrome, a poorly defined entity associated with a high mortality rate in many marmoset colonies. Paraffin sections of the gastroenteric organs of 116 of these marmosets were re-examined in detail; lesions were identified, quantitated, and analyzed with a method of multiple chi-square testing for possible associations between findings. Five distinct disease entities were identified: prosthenorchosis, amebiasis, paramyxovirus disease, sepsis, and chronic coli

Myelodysplastic syndrome complicated by central diabetes insipidus and cerebral salt wasting syndrome with peculiar change in magnetic resonance images.

Central diabetes insipidus (CDI) could occurs in patients with myelodysplastic syndrome (MDS) or acute myeloid leukemia (AML), because of infiltration of leukemic cells into the neurohypophysis or some other reason and it is closely associated with abnormalities of chromosome 7. We report a case of MDS with abnormalities of chromosome 7, presenting as CDI followed by deterioration of polyuria and hyponatremia with a decreased extracellular fluid volume. Magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) revealed symmetrically enhanced lesions in the hypothalamus. Fludrocortisone treatment normalized his serum s

Cerebral salt wasting syndrome in an elderly patient with traumatic brain injury: a case report.

BACKGROUND: Cerebral Salt Wasting Syndrome (CSWS) represents a diagnostically challenging and potentially fatal complication of traumatic brain injury (TBI). It is defined by renal sodium excretion-induced hyponatremia accompanied by hypovolemia, yet its clinical signature-worsening consciousness-frequently mimics intracranial hypertension or Syndrome of Inappropriate Antidiuretic Hormone Secretion (SIADH). Misdiagnosis, particularly the imposition of fluid restriction, may precipitate catastrophic deterioration. CASE PRESENTATION: An 83-year-old male with pre-existing hypertension and atrial

[A case of renal salt wasting syndrome progressing to severe hyponatremia after gemcitabine-cisplatin chemotherapy].

Renal impairment with a decreased glomerular filtration rate is a classical nephrotoxicity associated with cisplatin (CDDP). Renal salt wasting syndrome (RSWS), which is characterized by water and salt wasting, is a rare nephrotoxicity associated with CDDP. This syndrome shares many similarities with the syndrome of inappropriate secretion of antidiuretic hormone (SIADH). Thus, it is important to differentiate between RSWS and SIADH because the treatment of one affects the pathogenesis of the other. Here, we report a case of RSWS after chemotherapy with CDDP. A 72-year-old man with bladder uro
