Legacy of contaminant N sources to the NO3- signature in rivers: a combined isotopic (δ15N-NO3-, δ18O-NO3-, δ11B) and microbiological investigation.

Nitrate content of surface waters results from complex mixing of multiple sources, whose signatures can be modified through N reactions occurring within the different compartments of the whole catchment. Despite this complexity, the determination of nitrate origin is the first and crucial step for water resource preservation. Here, for the first time, we combined at the catchment scale stable isotopic tracers (δ15N and δ18O of nitrate and δ11B) and fecal indicators to trace nitrate sources and pathways to the stream. We tested this approach on two rivers in an agricultural region of SW France.

Clinical study on accentuated antagonism in the regulation of heart rate in children.

Facial immersion testing in cold water (< 4 degrees C) was performed to study the responses of sinus cycle length to increased parasympathetic tone before and 5 min after exercise testing in 27 children. There were no episodes of sinus arrest or extrasystole during the facial immersion testing. The resting sinus cycle lengths were significantly shorter after (539 +/- 68 msec) than before (597 +/- 96 msec) exercise testing (p < 0.001). The maximal sinus cycle lengths before and after exercise testing during cold water facial immersion testing did not differ significantly (928 +/- 167 msec and 9

Soil water and inorganic nitrogen contents drive soil microbial carbon fixation during wetland reclamation and restoration.

Wetlands are critical terrestrial carbon sinks, playing a vital role in mitigating global warming by fixing substantial atmospheric carbon dioxide. To explore how wetland reclamation and restoration affect soil microbial carbon fixation, we sampled soils from five land-use types in western Jilin Province, China: undisturbed natural reed wetland, reclaimed rice paddy and upland field, restored agricultural drainage wetland and naturally restored wetland after farmland abandonment. We analyzed the effects of wetland reclamation and restoration on microbial communities, metabolic pathways, and ca

Effects of Water Activity and Temperature on the Caking Properties of Amorphous Carbohydrate Powders.

Water sorption reduces the glass transition temperature (T g) of amorphous carbohydrate powders due to water plasticization. Caking of amorphous powder occurs when T g decreases below the storage temperature (T), that is, when the glass-to-rubber transition occurs. Although glass-to-rubber transition also occurs when T is greater than T g, knowledge regarding the caking of amorphous powders induced by T elevation is limited. Thus, caking properties were investigated using amorphous carbohydrate powders with varying water activity (a w) values prepared at 25 °C, stored at a higher temperature,

Simulations of historical impacts of climate change and atmospheric chemistry on a northeastern U.S. forest ecosystem.

Climate change, land disturbance, and atmospheric chemistry have substantially impacted northeastern hardwood forests. However, it is challenging to quantify the exacerbating or mitigating interactions among these disturbances on carbon (C), nitrogen (N), and water cycling in forest ecosystems. To evaluate these effects, we applied the PnET-CN-daily model to simulate the historical patterns of C, N, and water cycling at Harvard Forest in central Massachusetts, United States. The model was run with a reconstructed historical climate and air chemistry scenario, and results were compared with fie

Evaluation of Steaming and Drying of Black Sesame Seeds for Nine Cycles Using Grey-Correlation Analysis Based on Variation-Coefficient Weight.

This study aimed to improve the steaming process of black sesame seeds. A comprehensive evaluation was conducted using the grey-correlation method based on the variation-coefficient weight to observe the treatments of normal-pressure (NPS) and high-pressure (HPS) steaming (with/without soaking in water) for nine cycles. Their effects on the contents of water, protein, fat, ash, melanin, sesamin, and sesamolin of black sesame seeds, as well as the sensory score of the black sesame pill, were determined. We found that with varied steaming methods and increased steaming cycles, the contents of th

Identification of suitable sites for rainwater and storm water harvesting through spatial analysis and smart sustainable urban water infrastructure in Lahore, Pakistan.

Sustainable and water-wise cities maintain an eco-friendly urban hydrological cycle (UHC). Regrettably, the UHC of Pakistani cities is not consistently eco-friendly. Pakistan is situated within the influential area of the world's largest monsoon weather system. Cities like Lahore face simultaneous vulnerabilities to urban flooding and water scarcity due to extreme climate change events. Therefore, Pakistan's urban areas necessitate Urban Water Infrastructural Transformation (UWIT), achievable only after identifying suitable Rainwater and Stormwater Harvesting Potential Sites (RSWHPS) in Lahore

Insights into the assembly mechanisms, co-occurrence patterns, and functional roles of bacterial community in an estuary system.

UNLABELLED: Microbial drivers of biogeochemical cycles in estuaries remain understudied, particularly regarding biodiversity-function relationships. Using 16S rDNA sequencing, we analyzed taxonomic and functional profiles of bacterial communities in the water and sediment along the salinity gradient in Zhenhai Bay (South China). Significant differences in diversity, structure, composition, and function were observed between water and sediment habitats, indicating habitat influence. The terrestrial pollution sources detected in this study have a limited contribution to Zhenhai Bay, with unknown

Laboratory Production of Biofuels and Biochemicals from a Rapeseed Oil through Catalytic Cracking Conversion.

The work is based on a reported study which investigates the processability of canola oil (bio-feed) in the presence of bitumen-derived heavy gas oil (HGO) for production of transportation fuels through a fluid catalytic cracking (FCC) route. Cracking experiments are performed with a fully automated reaction unit at a fixed weight hourly space velocity (WHSV) of 8 hr(-1), 490-530 °C, and catalyst/oil ratios of 4-12 g/g. When a feed is in contact with catalyst in the fluid-bed reactor, cracking takes place generating gaseous, liquid, and solid products. The vapor produced is condensed and colle

Coupled nitrogen and phosphorus cycles mediated by coordinated variations of functional microbes in industrial recirculating aquaculture system.

Industrial Recirculating Aquaculture Systems (IRAS) represent a sustainable and efficient approach to aquaculture, offering significant benefits in water conservation and environmental management. A comprehensive understanding of nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) cycling is essential for optimizing system design and operational strategies, enabling the maintenance of a balanced ecosystem within IRAS. Here, water microbial communities in the shrimp aquaculture pond (AP) and nitrification tank (NT) of the IRAS were investigated using a metagenomics-based approach to explore the mechanisms of N and

Impact of biochar amendment on soil water soluble carbon in the context of extreme hydrological events.

Biochar amendments to soil have been promoted as a low cost carbon (C) sequestration strategy as well as a way to increase nutrient retention and remediate contaminants. If biochar is to become part of a long-term management strategy, it is important to consider its positive and negative impacts, and their trade-offs, on soil organic matter (SOM) and soluble C under different hydrological conditions such as prolonged drought or frequent wet-dry cycles. A 52-week incubation experiment measuring the influence of biochar on soil water soluble C under different soil moisture conditions (wet, dry,

Amphibious behavior of Alligator mississippiensis: roles of a circadian rhythm and light.

Juvenile American alligators in outdoor pens moved out of and into the water at sunrise and sunset, respectively. When the natural light cycle was extended with artificial illumination, these movements gradually shifted into phase with the altered light cycles; therefore, the amphibious behavior was modulated by a circadian rhythm cued by light. Movement between land and water was characterized by a decrease in body temperature, which suggests that it is was not simply a proximate heat-seeking response. After the movements had been in phase with the altered light cycles for a time, they sponta

The importance of thinking beyond the water-supply in cholera epidemics: A historical urban case-study.

BACKGROUND: Planning interventions to respond to cholera epidemics requires an understanding of the major transmission routes. Interrupting short-cycle (household, foodborne) transmission may require different approaches as compared long-cycle (environmentally-mediated/waterborne) transmission. However, differentiating the relative contribution of short- and long-cycle routes has remained difficult, and most cholera outbreak control efforts focus on interrupting long-cycle transmission. Here we use high-resolution epidemiological and municipal infrastructure data from a cholera outbreak in 185

Experimental evidence and ecological perspectives for the adaptation of Schistosoma mansoni Sambon, 1907 (Digenea: Schistosomatidae) to a wild host, the water-rat, Nectomys squamipes Brants, 1827 (Rodentia: Sigmodontinae).

Due to the semi aquatic habits and the overlap of the geographical distribution of the water-rat, Nectomys spp., with schistosomiasis endemic areas, these wild rodents are very likely to acquire Schistosoma mansoni infection in their daily activities. The role of the water-rat in the S. mansoni cycle would be substantiated if one could prove that these rodents acquire the parasite during their own activity time, a completely independent time schedule of human activities. To pursue this goal, we performed two field experiments in the municipality of Sumidouro, State of Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, a

Global Variations in Water Vapor and Saturation State Throughout the Mars Year 34 Dusty Season.

To understand the evolving martian water cycle, a global perspective of the combined vertical and horizontal distribution of water is needed in relation to supersaturation and water loss and how it varies spatially and temporally. The global vertical water vapor distribution is investigated through an analysis that unifies water, temperature and dust retrievals from several instruments on multiple spacecraft throughout Mars Year (MY) 34 with a global circulation model. During the dusty season of MY 34, northern polar latitudes are largely absent of water vapor below 20 km with variations above

Abyssal seafloor as a key driver of ocean trace-metal biogeochemical cycles.

Trace elements and isotopes (TEIs) are important to marine life and are essential tools for studying ocean processes1. Two different frameworks have arisen regarding marine TEI cycling: reversible scavenging favours water-column control on TEI distributions2-5, and seafloor boundary exchange emphasizes sedimentary imprints on water-column biogeochemistry6,7. These two views lead to disparate interpretations of TEI behaviours8-10. Here we use rare earth elements and neodymium isotopes as exemplar tracers of particle scavenging11 and boundary exchange6,7,12. We integrate these data with models o

Wildfire-Altered Soil Water-Extractable Organic Matter Drives Divergent Greenhouse Gas Emissions in Anaerobic Subsurface Soils.

Intensifying global climate change has increased wildfire frequency. Wildfire-altered soil water-extractable organic matter (burned-WEOM) is hydrologically transported to unburned areas, profoundly affecting cross-ecosystem carbon-nitrogen cycling and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions. Taking soils from unburned subtropical forests as the research object, this study combined anaerobic incubation with high-resolution mass spectrometry and metagenomic sequencing to elucidate the regulatory mechanisms of burned-WEOM on soil GHG emissions under anaerobic conditions. The results showed that burned-WEO

Environmental reproductive toxicity of common pesticides: Mechanisms and implications throughout the zebrafish life cycle.

Reproductive toxicity is a significant factor contributing to the decline in population numbers and is increasingly being reported in association with pesticide exposure in ecological risk assessments. Pesticides can leach or spill into aquatic environments, where they remain suspended or settle, making aquatic organisms vulnerable to potential adverse effects. Although considerable progress has been made in studying the environmental impacts on reproductive health, there remains a need for comprehensive reviews detailing the complex relationships between reproductive toxicity and the structur
