Extreme Weather Events and Adolescent Contraception in Sub-Saharan Africa.

PURPOSE: Little is known about the associations between extreme weather events (drought and heavy rains) and adolescent family planning. The current analysis contributes to this evidence gap by examining the association between extreme weather events and adolescent modern contraception use. METHODS: We analyzed the 2011-2020 Demographic and Health Surveys in 22 countries in sub-Saharan Africa. Drought and heavy rainfall were defined based on the extent to which annual rainfall deviated from the historical average. Logistic regression examined the association between extreme weather events (dr

Weather patterns forecast the severity of cervical spinal cord injuries.

To determine if regional weather patterns could predict the severity of cervical spinal cord injuries (CSCI) across the United States. Non-elective CSCI patients from 2015 to 2020 were identified in the National Inpatient Sample. Linear mixed-effects models explored associations between CSCI features and weather patterns, with random effects for hospitals. Granger causality tests were performed for each region to assess if weather could predict complete CSCI. Cross-correlation analyses examined temporal trends. Logistic mixed-effects models evaluated correlations between CSCI severity and seas

Association of Weather Variables With Pathogens Contributing to Conjunctivitis Worldwide.

PURPOSE: To identify weather variables associated with pathogens contributing to infectious conjunctivitis globally. METHODS: Sample collection and pathogen identification from patients with acute infectious conjunctivitis was performed from 2017 to 2023. We linked pathogens identified from 13 sites across 8 countries with publicly available weather data by geographic coordinates. Mixed effects logistic regression analysis was performed to estimate the associations between temperature, precipitation, and relative humidity exposures, and the prevalence of infection types (RNA virus, DNA virus,

Centering Equity in the Nation's Weather, Water, and Climate Services.

Water, weather, and climate affect everyone. However, their impacts on various communities can be very different based on who has access to essential services and environmental knowledge. Structural discrimination, including racism and other forms of privileging and exclusion, affects people's lives and health, with ripples across all sectors of society. In the United States, the need to equitably provide weather, water, and climate services is uplifted by the Justice40 Initiative (Executive Order 14008), which mandates 40% of the benefits of certain federal climate and clean energy investment

Distributed network of optically pumped magnetometers for space weather monitoring.

Spatial variation in the intensity of magnetospheric and ionospheric fluctuations during solar storms creates ground-induced currents, of importance in both infrastructure engineering and geophysical science. This activity is presently measured using a network of ground-based magnetometers, typically consisting of extensive installations at established observatory sites. We show that this network can be enhanced by the addition of remote quantum magnetometers which combine high sensitivity with intrinsic calibration. These nodes utilize scalable hardware and run independently of wired communic

Weather and nest cavity characteristics influence fecundity in mountain chickadees.

BACKGROUND: Examining direct and indirect effects on reproduction at multiple scales allows for a broad understanding of species' resilience to environmental change. We examine how the fecundity of the mountain chickadee (Poecile gambeli), a secondary cavity-nesting, insectivorous bird, varied in relation to factors at three scales: regional weather conditions, regional- and site-level food availability, site-level community dynamics, and nest-level cavity characteristics. We hypothesized that earlier laying dates and higher fecundity (clutch size, nest survival, brood size) would be associate

Increased Relative Risk of Tick-Borne Encephalitis in Warmer Weather.

Tick-borne encephalitis (TBE) is a serious acute neuroinfection of humans caused by a tick-borne flavivirus. The disease is typically seasonal, linked to the host-seeking activity of Ixodes ricinus (predominantly nymphs), the principal European tick vector species. To address the need for accurate risk predictions of contracting TBE, data on 4,044 TBE cases reported in the Czech Republic during 2001-2006 were compared with questing activity of I. ricinus nymphs monitored weekly at a defined location for the same 6-year period. A time shift of 21 days between infected tick bite and recorded dis

Daily weather variables and affective disorder admissions to psychiatric hospitals.

Numerous studies have reported that admission rates in patients with affective disorders are subject to seasonal variation. Notwithstanding, there has been limited evaluation of the degree to which changeable daily meteorological patterns influence affective disorder admission rates. A handful of small studies have alluded to a potential link between psychiatric admission rates and meteorological variables such as environmental temperature (heat waves in particular), wind direction and sunshine. We used the Kruskal-Wallis test, ARIMA and time-series regression analyses to examine whether daily

Weather conditions and transient global amnesia. A six-year study.

OBJECTIVES: The aetiology of transient global amnesia (TGA) is still unknown. Various events or activities have been shown to trigger TGA. A common feature of these events is an increased sympathetic activity which in turn may be influenced by meteorological factors. This prompted us to evaluate the influence of climatic parameters, and their variation on the incidence of TGA. METHODS: A total of 223 cases of TGA admitted to our hospital over a six-year period were studied. The study consisted of a comparison between the climatic parameters of days with TGA and those without TGA. The meteorol

Anuria secondary to hot weather-induced hyperuricaemia: diagnosis and management.

BACKGROUND: There is little information on the management of anuria secondary to severe volume depletion or as a rare manifestation of heat stroke in areas of the world with very hot summers. We present our experience with hot weather-induced hyperuricaemia in Kuwait. PATIENTS AND METHODS: Patients presenting to our urology unit as an emergency during the hot summer months of April to October (average temperature 40-55 oC) were suspected of having hot weather-induced anuria secondary to hyperuricemia if they had a history of working in the sun for 6 to 8 hours per day and a progressive decrea

Weather data sources influence predictive performance of disease forecasting models.

Weather data from fine- and coarse-scale sources are increasingly used in disease forecasting models to support management decisions, yet comparisons between fine- and coarse-scale sources remain limited, largely due to the difficulty of acquiring fine-scale datasets across locations and seasons. Differences among weather sources can influence model outputs, resulting in variation in predictive performance and the timing of management decisions. This study evaluated four weather data sources, grouped as fine-scale (in-canopy and on-farm stations) and coarse-scale (regional gridded and point-ba

Understanding Natural Disaster or Weather-Related Drowning Deaths Among Children.

OBJECTIVES: Drowning is the leading cause of death during flood disasters. Little is known about these deaths. Child death review teams review details of child deaths to understand circumstances and risk factors to inform prevention. METHODS: Using data entered in 2005 to 2021 for children ages 0 to 17 years from the National Fatality Review-Case Reporting System, we identified 130 drowning deaths directly attributed to natural disaster or weather incidents, and 14 deaths indirectly attributed to these incidents. Frequencies, proportions, and χ2 statistics were used to describe selected measu

How do extreme weather events contribute to violence against children?

BACKGROUND: Only recently have research and policy begun to shine a light on the magnifying effects of EWEs (Extreme Weather Events) on children's exposure to violence. However, the links between EWEs and VAC (Violence against Children) remain under-theorised, poorly understood and often unacknowledged in policy and practice. OBJECTIVE: Identify, synthesize and analyse available evidence on the central characteristics and factors influencing the relationship between VAC and EWEs. METHODS: We conducted an extensive scoping review of the literature (academic and grey) to identify existing rese

Badger setts provide thermal refugia, buffering changeable surface weather conditions.

Den use can be crucial in buffering environmental conditions and especially to provide an insulated environment for raising altricial young. Through Sept-Dec 2016 we monitored temperature and humidity at 11 badger setts (burrow systems), using thermal probes inserted over 4-13 sett entrances to a depth of ca. 2 m, supplemented by continuous daily logging at one entrance per sett. Setts were cooler than exterior conditions Sept-Oct, and warmer than exterior conditions Nov-Dec. Setts cooled down when badgers left them to forage by night, and warmed up when badgers occupied them by day. Soil type

Dry weather induces outbreaks of human West Nile virus infections.

BACKGROUND: Since its first occurrence in the New York City area during 1999, West Nile virus (WNV) has spread rapidly across North America and has become a major public health concern in North America. By 2002, WNV was reported in 40 states and the District of Columbia with 4,156 human and 14,539 equine cases of infection. Mississippi had the highest human incidence rate of WNV during the 2002 epidemic in the United States. Epidemics of WNV can impose enormous impacts on local economies. Therefore, it is advantageous to predict human WNV risks for cost-effective controls of the disease and op
