BACKGROUND: Obesity is a chronic disease requiring long-term treatment, yet current treatment models do not align with the chronicity of obesity. Current guidelines provide limited direction on how to adapt treatment to support weight loss maintenance as adolescents transition into emerging adulthood, a distinct developmental period from the late teens to the mid-to-late twenties.
OBJECTIVE: This qualitative study aims to (1) better understand adolescents' and their parents' experiences after behavioral weight-loss treatment as they navigate the transition from late adolescence into emerging

INTRODUCTION: Vitamin D deficiency is commonly found among patients with obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). We aimed to determine the effect of an eight-week interdisciplinary weight loss and lifestyle intervention on circulating vitamin D levels in patients with moderate-to-severe OSA.
METHODS: 89 men were assigned to a usual-care group (n = 49) or an 8-week interdisciplinary weight loss and lifestyle intervention combined with usual-care (n = 40). Evaluations were conducted at baseline, intervention endpoint (i.e., 8 weeks), and 6 months post-intervention. Serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D) wa

BACKGROUND: The effect of behavioral commercial weight programs (CP) on weight loss is clear, yet their effects on diet quality are less studied.
OBJECTIVES: This study aims to evaluate the relative effectiveness of a digital CP on diet quality compared with standard nutritional guidance (SNG) over 6 months.
METHODS: This randomized controlled trial (clinicaltrials.gov/NCT05648344) included 376 United States adults with a body mass index of 27-45 kg/m2 and a self-reported desire to lose weight. Participants were randomly assigned to a 6-month digital, behavioral CP (WeightWatchers) (n = 187)

BACKGROUND: Commercial weight loss programs provide valuable consumer options for those desiring support. Several commercial programs are reported to produce ≥3-fold greater weight loss than self-directed dieting. The effectiveness of JumpstartMD, a commercial pay-as-you-go program that emphasizes a low-to-very-low-carbohydrate real-food diet and optional pharmacologic treatment without prepackaged meals or meal replacement, has not previously been described.
METHODS: Completer and last observation carried forward (LOCF) of clinic-measured weight loss (kg) in 18,769 female and 3638 male Jumps

The present study aimed to identify the factors that prohibit or enable breast cancer survivors from adopting a healthy lifestyle, as well as to record patients' suggestions towards developing a weight-loss lifestyle intervention. Twenty-three breast cancer survivors participated in four online, semi-structured focus groups in Greece. All discussions were video-recorded and transcribed verbatim. Participants were 50⋅5 ± 7⋅4 years old with a current mean BMI of 29⋅1 ± 3⋅4 kg/m2. Four main themes emerged from thematic analysis: (1) dietary and lifestyle practices, (2) the effects of cancer on bo

BACKGROUND: The proportion of women entering pregnancy overweight or obese has been rising and, in turn, is associated with adverse maternal and fetal outcomes. Gestational weight gain (GWG) exceeding Institute of Medicine (IOM) guidelines further increases health risks and has been independently associated with postpartum weight retention. Hispanic women are disproportionately affected by overweight and obesity, but have had limited access to interventions that promote healthy lifestyles due to cultural, socioeconomic, and language barriers. Therefore, the overall goal of this randomized cont

BACKGROUND: While intentional weight loss in older adults with obesity yields clinically important health benefits there is a need to minimize the negative effects of weight loss on concomitant loss of muscle mass and strength. Data show wearing weighted vests during exercise improves lean mass and lower extremity strength, however the efficacy of wearing a weighted vest during a period of weight loss to mitigate muscle and strength loss is not known.
OBJECTIVES: This study examined the feasibility of daily weighted vest use during a dietary weight loss intervention, and examined effects of v

There is substantial evidence that type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) can be prevented in high-risk individuals by a lifestyle program of regular exercise and weight reduction. Additionally, there is emerging evidence that new onset T2DM (<1year) can go into remission after weight loss and exercise in a majority of motivated individuals, obviating a need for glucose lowering medications. Yet, lifestyle programs to support such behavior change are not widely available. Moreover, health care insurance companies generally do not provide coverage for behavioral weight loss programs to prevent or trea

PURPOSE: Clinical and epidemiologic investigations suggest a strong association between obesity and obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). The purpose of this study is to evaluate the currently available literature reporting on the effectiveness of dietary weight loss in treating OSA among obese patients.
METHODS: Relevant studies were identified by computerized searches of PubMed, EMBASE, CINAHL, Web of Science, and The Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials through September 2011 as well as the reference lists of all obtained articles. Reassessed 3 years after the termination of a weight reduction program the body weight of former participants to control long-term efficiency of behavior-oriented weight reduction programs. Of 31 former participants, 21 could be rechecked. Most of the Ss stabilized their body weight or continued to reduce weight. Only 4Ss regained weight over the 3-year period. On an average, the group of former Ss lost 4.4 kilograms over the follow-up period. The whole reduction (therapy time and follow-up) resulted in 11.3 kilograms. Three results are encouraging, but difficult to discuss because no member o

BACKGROUND: Behavioral weight loss studies often enroll more females than males despite similar obesity prevalence. There is a paucity of experimental evidence on recruitment strategies to attract male participants in behavioral trials broadly and in weight management trials, specifically.
METHODS: We examined 4 theory and evidence-based advertising messages and 4 recruitment modalities (mailing, emailing, Facebook, and Spotify) in three iterative waves during a decentralized longitudinal randomized controlled trial comparing 2 behavioral weight loss interventions.
RESULTS: The number of ad

IMPORTANCE: Obesity and chronic diseases disproportionately burden racial/ethnic minority adults in the United States (U.S.) (eg, Black, Hispanic/Latino, Asian, American Indian/Alaska Native, and Native Hawaiian/Pacific Islander), partially owing to barriers to receiving obesity treatment. While eHealth/mHealth-supported interventions offer a potential scalable solution and have proliferated in recent years, the last evidence synthesis was published in 2018.
OBJECTIVE: Given the wide variation in intervention approaches, we aimed to map current evidence on weight management programs targeting

Obesity disproportionally impacts North Carolina, with rates exceeding national obesity rates, especially in rural areas. Lack of access to obesity care has been identified as a barrier to treatment nationally, excessively impacting those most vulnerable to the risks and consequences of obesity. UNC Health piloted a primary care-based weight management program in 2019, and this article details the program's subsequent scaling across a statewide footprint to address the problem for both adult and pediatric populations. The program leverages American Board of Obesity Medicine specialty-certified

This is a protocol for a Cochrane Review (qualitative). The objectives are as follows: This qualitative evidence synthesis (QES) aims to address the question: What is known from qualitative evidence about behavioural weight management for people living with mobility-limiting conditions, intellectual disabilities, or severe mental illness? The five review objectives are as follows. To explore individuals' experiences with weight and behavioural weight-management programmes. This includes understanding how individuals living with mobility-limiting conditions, intellectual disabilities, severe me

BACKGROUND: People with mental illness in the United States are almost twice as likely to be obese compared with those without a mental illness. Lifestyle factors, such as poor dietary choices and physical inactivity, are often cited as causes of obesity in this population, which limits the response to the obesity epidemic primarily to behavioral change interventions. In response, this project is grounded in a human rights framework to assure that the people most affected by the problem are included in understanding and addressing the problem. We sought to investigate social and structural fac

BACKGROUND: Despite controversy surrounding the construct of food addiction, its relationship with obesity and the validity of the Yale Food Addiction Scale (YFAS), have become emerging fields of study. No prior research has examined the prevalence and correlates of food addiction, and validation of the Modified Yale Food Addiction Scale (mYFAS), in a non-research based weight management clinic setting.
OBJECTIVE: The current study sought to examine the validity of a brief version of the Yale Food Addiction Scale in weight loss seeking patients, and to determine whether food addiction contrib

BACKGROUND: Behavior change support systems aim to shape, modify, or strengthen attitudes or behaviors without using coercion or deception. One of the main software features of persuasive system design is self-monitoring, which provides the means for users to continuously track their own performance or status, thereby facilitating goal attainment.
OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study is to examine whether self-input of weight (self-monitoring frequency) and its interaction with time influence weight loss in adults using a mobile health behavior change support system (mHBCSS). We hypothesized that

INTRODUCTION: Understanding within-treatment weight change patterns may inform strategies to improve long-term outcomes for children with overweight/obesity.
METHODS: Latent class modelling was applied to weekly weight change among 294 7-11-year-old children with overweight/obesity in behavioural weight management trials. Class differences in BMI z-score change through 1 year after treatment were examined using strict class assignment among completers (ANCOVA) or accounting for uncertainty in class assignment and missingness (Bolck, Croon and Hagenaars or BCH method).
RESULTS: Three classes

Social support plays a key role in behavioral changes, especially in Appalachian populations. We examined the mediating effect of social support in behavioral changes and corresponding weight loss outcomes among Appalachian adults. Data were from a group-randomized trial that compared a 12-month faith-based weight loss intervention to an active control group among overweight Appalachian adults in churches. Participants from the weight loss intervention who completed the 12-month assessment were the focus of this analysis. Baseline and 12-month data on weight, social support for eating habits (
