Medical Concerns Among Wheelchair Road Racers.

In brief: Before participating in the 1987 Peachtree Road Race in Atlanta, 43 wheelchair athletes completed a questionnaire about their training methods, injuries, and medical concerns. The injuries reported most frequently were abrasions and musculoskeletal syndromes of the upper extremities. Of particular interest in the study were the types of residual neurologic deficits and autonomic dysfunction among athletes with spinal cord injury. These deficits included altered temperature regulatory mechanisms, neurogenic bladder and bowel, spasticity, and autonomic dysreflexia. Athletes also report

Effects of deceleration profiles and driving speed on usability and user perception in autonomous wheelchairs.

Autonomous wheelchairs are increasingly recognized as personal mobility systems that may serve both individuals with physical impairments and able-bodied users; however, little is known about how specific motion control parameters shape user experience during autonomous navigation. This study investigated the effects of deceleration profiles and driving speed on the usability of an autonomous wheelchair, along with changes in user perceptions following actual use. Twenty participants evaluated five deceleration modes (ranging from -0.2 m/s2 to -1.0 m/s2) and five driving speed modes (ranging f

Characterizing the rolling resistance force and deformation of in-wheel suspension systems in manual wheelchairs.

In-wheel suspension systems for manual wheelchairs offer a potential remedy for dissipating whole body vibrations; however, some users feel that they impede their propulsion efficiency. The purpose of this study was to compare Loopwheel Urban, a type of in-wheel suspension wheel to a carbon fiber wheel (Spinergy CLX) and standard spoked wheel to elucidate their comparative effects on rolling resistance force and axle deformation. Component-level drum-based testing revealed that the average rolling resistance force of the Loopwheels was 118% and 44% higher on linoleum and carpet surfaces than t

How university students view disabled people: The role of wheelchairs, canes, and unspecified mobility aids.

PURPOSE/OBJECTIVE: Mobility aids are important to disabled people as a functional tool that can enhance their participation in leisure activities and work; however, mobility aids may also have implications for how disabled people are viewed by others. Using theories from social psychology, this study aimed to understand how mobility aids contribute to the perception of mobility aid users. RESEARCH METHOD: A total of 259 participants without disabilities, who were primarily young, Caucasian, female-identifying university students, completed the questionnaires. The primary questionnaires of int

Using Machine Learning to Explore the Crucial Factors of Assistive Technology Assessments: Cases of Wheelchairs.

The global population is gradually entering an aging society; chronic diseases and functional disabilities have increased, thereby increasing the number of people with limitations. Therefore, the demand for assistive devices has increased substantially. Due to numerous and complex types of assistive devices, an assessment by a professional therapist is required to help the individual find a suitable assistive device. According to actual site data, the assessment needs of "wheelchairs" accounted for most of the cases. Therefore, this study identified five key evaluation characteristics (head co
